💜The Truth Untold - this is how they conceptualised the song: They created a very old and sad story called, 'La Città di Smeraldo' that takes place in a small town in Italy ( in the 16th Century -1500's). The story's about an 'ugly' man who hid in an old castle alone, even though he was a gentle good person, because of his looks he received lots of hate & cruelty while growing up. He never opened his heart to anyone. Eventually if anyone tried to approach him, he covered his deformed face with a mask and hid in fear, ...So he became bitter and angry. His one happiness in life was to plant beautiful flowers in his walled off garden. One night a woman appeared near the man's castle. She jumped over the garden fence and stole a flower. This angered the man at first. So he watched his garden all night. But when he fell asleep, the woman took another flower. This continued for several nights. The man pretended to be asleep and watched the woman steal a flower. He started becoming curious about the woman. He began waiting for her. Without realizing he started waiting for her to come and each day began to seem a little brighter. Following after her one day he realized that she was selling the flowers that she stole from him to try to make a living. The man falling in love so desperately wanted to help the woman. But he was afraid she would be terrified by the way he looks if he approached her. He 'knew' she would never be able love his 'grotesque' appearance. He came to a conclusion that the only way he would be able to help her is to keep himself hidden and let her continue stealing flowers from his garden. The man decided to make a flower that doesn't exist on the planet. So that the woman could sell them at a expensive price. He began to create the flower in his castle. After many unsuccessful attempts, the man created the most beautiful of all flowers (The Smeraldo Flower) and filled his garden with these beautiful flowers. But the woman stopped coming. No matter how long he waited she never came back to his garden. He eventually found out that the woman had starved to death before he could give her the flower that would have saved her. If only he had been brave enough to approach her😭 The smeraldo flower plays a part in the Bangtan Universe storyline, and you will see it in various MVs. The Smeraldo flower symbolizes the sincerity that could not be delivered. The moral of the story, as interpreted by BTS, is that people are entrapped in the depths of misery and darkness due to a lack of self-love and confidence. The protagonist would have probably felt much better, had he talked to her and confronted his fears and insecurities. In addition, another aspect is the way people are affected by childhood trauma and dysfunctional families. The man was highly affected by his childhood trauma caused by nasty comments made by people. Have a WONDERFUL Day💜💜
Hi dear. 68yo Army here. I'm so glad you're coming at this from a writer's point of view. RM is very well read and often uses Carl Jung's philosophies in a lot of his songs.
Thank you for this. I loved hearing this story as I love learning fairytales from other countries (and love that a Korean group adapted an Italian one for their song). I also love kpop groups with lore. It made me love the song more. 😊
I just want to say THANK YOU to whoever gave you the list of songs and link for your BTS reaction week. What an amazing and so diverse set of songs from BTS. A wonderful way to be introduced to BTS music. Thank you also for your genuine reactions and I’m glad you’re enjoying it.

Yes! Everything you said. I've never seen anyone have such a great start. It is definitely my taste! I usually take time to put together a nice list for people too, but I honestly don't want to mess with what is going on. I'm just enjoying! LOL!
The mask is used in many BTS works. Their albums are thematic. In the Love Yourself album trilogy, the truth untold is on the second album. Love Yourself: Her is about finding that one true fated love. Love Yourself: Tear is about that love being torn apart. The mask imagery is prominent in this album. Love Yourself: Answer is about learning that the way to be loved is to first love yourself. The mask imagery comes back in the Map of the Soul album series. The two albums are based on Carl Jung’s concept of self. He believed that there were three parts of the human psyche: the persona (masks), the shadow, and the ego. The album, Map of the Soul: Persona talks about the masks that we wear. The young men are really talented story tellers. They sing about concepts that we need to hear about. It’s refreshing in this day and age.
These lyrics come from an italian story of a man who owns a castle and watches a woman come into his garden to pick flowers, he wants to go up to her but he deformed so he doesn't have the courage to go up to her. Finally after many times seeing her in his garden he finally gathers the courage to go up to her with a mask and talk to her but by then she has died. He spends the rest of his life missing her. This is an analogy is that mask that BTS wears to be in front of the audience so they can perform for the fans. The fans being that woman who goes into the garden to pick the flowers of their songs. The story is called "La Citta di Smeraldo". Jin even incorporated the Smeraldo flower into the BTS Universe story that they weave thru out their story within multiple albums. This song was co-written by RM (the poet) as well as Steve Aoki who co-wrote the music. This is one of my favorite songs.
@@Killdeer25 It is something that BTS pride themselves in doing. They even use books as their inspiration for songs like Blood, Sweat and Tears and an entire album like Persona and 7 inspired by the writings of Carl Jung.
@@Killdeer25 the coolest part is that the story/myth the song is based on was made up for the Bangtan Universe. So it’s like fictional story inception lol. It’s a story from a story.
or rappers help or write a lot of the songs. RM is def a literal poet. Suga writes songs too but is involved in a lot of the production. and even if they dont write a whole song they are all involved in one way or another
One of my ultimate favorite BTS vocal line songs! 💜 RM, who wrote this song, is a poet! (among other things)😊 I see by the comments that you're doing a week long dive into the guys. I just found you. Will definitely go find and see what else you've been looking at. Thanks for checking out this absolutely wonderful team of guys!
That RM can write some lyrics. Just beautiful with so much complex imagery and symbolism. Perfectly executed by the rap line. Just a perfectly told fairy tale ballad. Amazing song.
I remember hearing in a video a while back, the guys talking about Truth Untold and that they would all wait for the very end when Jimin sings the last bit. Jimin would change up the amount of emotion in his voice at every concert making the song ending just a little different and sometimes making it alot sadder than others. And to make it even better during the last concert of the tour, Jungkook sang it with Jimin to give the ending an even more special touch for the last concert.
BTS was flabbergasted that -this- b-side song was voted #1 for "want to see live" by ARMY! Heartbeat is another fav of ARMY, a "throw away" song made for an online game OST, never performed live; but beloved! Enjoying your journey, make sure you have time to process, a lot of their songs pack a punch (emotionally, visually, choreo, lyrics)! Yes, they keep impressing, & have no bad songs in a 300+ catalog! No genre is impossible for them, they are beyond talented, & lovely-but their adorkable, so humble, kind, silly, smart, loving selves that make ARMY stay & stan! 💜
Good idea! I have used a process that I really like to process music, it's working down, I probably could calm down a touch, I am making silly mistakes
Even though this is a “B-side” song, the group/company created an elaborate backstory/lore for it including a fictional “Italian tale” in which an equally “blue & white” flower was assigned the meaning of “the truth that can not be told”, hence the title of the song. However, blue symbolizing depression is pretty common, so even without knowing the lore it isn’t hard to pick up what it’s about. Given that depression/mental illness is STILL a topic not openly discussed in many countries/cultures but that BTS doesn’t shy away from addressing, I think the point they were trying to make with the lore & title is that what holds ppl back from potential fulfillment isn’t the mental illness itself but the stigma attached to it and the deep fear/shame it causes on people. Most people who have suffered from mental health issues can relate to the feeling of being so ashamed or afraid of it that they’d resign themselves to loneliness rather than have others see their “damaged” side.
Seeing them live in concert my two favorites were this song by the vocalists and “outro tear” by the rapline. They are both so well done live, both emotional in difficult ways. Amazing💜
@@Killdeer25 yes, they are incredible…and the feeling of 70,000 army screaming next to you was also like nothing I’ve ever experienced. Hope you get the chance to go when they return as a group in 2025. Though heads up that getting tickets is like the hunger games😂
This was inspired by the origional Italian version of the story Beauty and the Beast was based on. I don't know but would suspect because layering multiple meanings and literary references is very RM, I suspect he wrote this song. Or, participated heavily.
The legend this song is based on isn't an original Italian story. It's based on a legend that comes from the Bangtan Universe, which the flower shop owner learns about when he meets an Italian florist.
This song is from their album Love Yourself: Tear. All of the songs on this album have to do with masks in one way or another even if the song doesn’t specifically mention the word mask. (They find other ways to describe it). There are 3 albums in the Love Yourself series. Love Yourself:Her is full of songs about falling in love or loving someone. Love Yourself: Tear has songs that are about realizing that you have either tried to change yourself to keep that person’s love or you have been hiding your true self from that person in fear that they would not be able to love the real you. Because of this your relationship (with a friend, with a lover, with a family member, with yourself) is built on a false foundation and is fake love and therefore falling apart. The final album Love Yourself: Answer is all about learning to love yourself the way you are. It’s a three step process where BTS basically provides therapy for ARMY to teach us how to love ourselves and others in a way that is healthy and will make us happy.
@@Killdeer25 I think full album listens could be a good idea. BTS is usually purposeful in the order that they put tracks on an album so that is tells a particular story or sends a particular message as song builds on song. When I listen to the songs in the order intended I sometimes view the meaning of the song differently that hearing the song individually.
Thank you for looking at BTS. Never apologise for taking too much of our time. We will watch hours of BTS with you. This was the song that captured me. I heard V's soulful emotional vocal and was hooked. Still here 3 years later. V is my bias but i am very much OT7 now. Loving your reactions. This song is beautiful 😌 It doesnt say on that live video but Steve Aoki produced the song and was one of the writers. Not sure if you know of him Aaron - I didn't till BTS. So on streaming you will see the song says The Truth Untold (feat. Steve Aoki). He also did a remix of their song MIC Drop which was released with an MV.
The Love Yourself series of albums takes different approaches to the idea that if you do not love yourself, how can you love another. The protagonist here cannot love himself as his self-perception is of a person who is flawed and who can only be seen positively if he hides behind a mask. He figuratively builds a "sandcastle" doomed to collapse as all sandcastles do. There is a story this song derives from which I will leave to others to relate. I just want to say that this song exists at the intersection of BTS's works based on the philosophy of Hermann Hesse related in the novel Demian which preceded the Love Yourself series and the subsequent Map of the Soul works based on the psychology of Karl Jung. BTS's underlying messaging exists in this intermediacy.
Wow! Absolutely loved your lyrical analysis and perspective! Making me think more than just the legend that inspired it. And knowing RM and the lyrical genius there that always writes on multiple levels, I'm thinking he probably thought about things like you had just never went into deep explanation. Great reaction! And again, despite being rapline bias, this is one of my all time faves! They are so incredible and look so vulnerable up there with almost nothing but their voices.
Although there’s a story, you’re interpretation is one I really love! That’s what I love about the lyrics, along with music, and poetry. So many way to interpret. Aside from the folk story, I absolutely love your thoughts here! I agree! 💜💜💜👏👏👏
Is it weird for me to shed tears while listening to you dissecting the lyrics? They were so on point!!! Thank you for this genuine reaction. Subscribing for more of your reaction and lyric dissection. Borahae!💜💜💜

Wow, I love how you just dove into that lyrical analysis. As someone who associates this song with the legend or made-up legend of the man in the castle and the woman in the garden, my mind always goes to the story but I really liked everything you took from it. That's the true beauty of music...it speaks differently to everyone. And a bonus bit, Steve Aoki collabed on this. That's the heartbeat percussive element. They have three collaborations.
Excellent reaction. Appreciate your input based on your experience and background. You truly saw this song from a musicality, lyrical and vocal skill perspective. Looking forward to seeing more BTS content from you. Thank you.
Thank you for reacting to my very favorite song. I've listened to this song so many times and still get emotional. They don't just sing the song they pour their hearts out with so much emotion that you feel the sadness and pain of the person hiding behind the mask. I am one that sometimes hides behind a mask so maybe that's why I like the song so much. Look forward to more reactions. 💜💜
@@Killdeer25I just came across your feed. I'm happy for your very thoughtful insight and comments. Most reactors just say cool nice sing. I look forward to your BTS journey. I purple you 💜💜 Cape Town South Africa
As the other commenters mentioned, BTS (and BigHit) made up a story around this song. But I must admit that your interpreation of the blue flower as depression is also equally heartbreaking knowing that at the bridge of the song, they are singing about how the girl ended up dying and they're regretting not being brave enough to help the girl ("maybe back then, if I just had a little more courage and stood before you, would everything be different now?")
I remember doing some studies and how blue and flowers can represent those emotions and I find it so shocking that the lyrics laid out the feel of that so much! I think its a good song to serves as a warning, almost feels like. "learn from our mistakes" kind of feel
Based on”. The story describes a man who is said to be “ugly” and lives in a castle all by himself. He is an illegitimate child of a duke and therefore, was the victim of the hate of the Duke’s wife and her children. Just like in Beauty and the Beast a young girl steals flowers from his majestic garden in order to make the ends meet. When he first sees the missing flowers, he becomes quite displeased and attempts to capture the thief. However, when he finds that it was a young girl, he disguises himself and looks for her. Subsequently, he realizes the truth and the dire situation of the girl. He then decides to introduce himself as well as to help her by creating an expensive flower. During this period, he unconsciously starts expecting her visits and gradually becomes attached to her. After a long-time, he successfully creates the most beautiful blue flower called “Smeraldo” (Emerald) and notices that she is no longer visiting his garden. He then learns about her unfortunate death and becomes agitated. It is said that he spends the rest of his life in despair and misery, contemplating whether her life could have been saved if he was able to face her. The moral of the story, as interpreted by BTS, is that people are entrapped in the depths of misery and darkness due to the lack of self-love and confidence. The protagonist would have probably felt much better, had he talked to her and confronted his fears and insecurities. In addition, another aspect is that the way people are affected by childhood trauma and dysfunctional families. The man was highly affected by his childhood trauma caused by the Duke’s wife’s actions as well as by nasty comments made by people. Furthermore, when considering the amazing lyricism of “The Truth Untold”, it is more poetic and symbolic than the story itself. First and foremost, the first two verses of the song introduce the two characters of the isolated man and the young girl.
If you really want to delve furthering into BTS I recommend watching A Guide to BTS the Bangtan 7 by Taylor and The Hardships of BTS from 2013-2021 by Xceleste. The Truth Untold A Beautiful Story by Rice Squad
For more flower/garden imagery, I recommend Fake Love. Totally different sound but some of the best lyrics for love that isn't going well. While the BTS MV has more than 1B views, I personally like the cover that SWJA did, backed by a live rock band: ruclips.net/video/w-yBVR2qm0U/видео.htmlsi=elUvxluHUIffC1v-

It's so good!
I absolutely agree! RM has such a way with language it actually proceeds past barriers
Although there’s a story, you’re interpretation is one I really love! That’s what I love about the lyrics, along with music, and poetry. So many way to interpret. Aside from the folk story, I absolutely love your thoughts here! I agree! 💜💜💜👏👏👏
Thank you! I do love the other story as well, I feel like i heard about the three masks is some sprt of psychological phenomenon out, I could be wrong
this is one of my favorite. i listen this song everyday
I still have Goosebumps
Louder than bombs please 🙏

@@Killdeer25 thank you

I loved your interpretation of the lyrics! It's cool to hear about it from a writer's perspective. Thanks for taking us along for the ride 💜
Thank you for watching, I was definitely unaware of the Italian beauty and the beast connection tho
This is one of my favorites. Thanks for choosing to react to this song!
I can understand why! Thank you for watching!
I love this song!
Is it weird for me to shed tears while listening to you dissecting the lyrics? They were so on point!!! Thank you for this genuine reaction. Subscribing for more of your reaction and lyric dissection. Borahae!💜💜💜
Thank you so much! I appreciate you so much! Personally I don't think it's weird, sometimes I have to pause videos or prep myself to do it because seriously gets hard to not shed my own tears
@@Killdeer25 Tells a lot about you being a genuine person. Now, I am sincerely asking you to make this a regular thing. Maybe once a week? Just a humble request from a subscriber. I know it was originally just for a week, but we will be so happy if you continue on this journey.
@@myglp613 I have some plans to keep them close and in rotation coming up. I had an announcement about having a change to the line up of how I usually do things
@myglp613 I am thinking of how or what to do 100% right now, I have the context of what I wanna do but how I go about it might be different
One of my fav songs live 🔥💜💜💜💜
It's such a good song!
BEAUTIFUL 🤧🤧 🇰🇷💜🙏
Thank you for your reaction. I love that you delved into the lyrics as they are so important in BTS songs.
:)
Some songs just really hit
Wow, I love how you just dove into that lyrical analysis. As someone who associates this song with the legend or made-up legend of the man in the castle and the woman in the garden, my mind always goes to the story but I really liked everything you took from it. That's the true beauty of music...it speaks differently to everyone. And a bonus bit, Steve Aoki collabed on this. That's the heartbeat percussive element. They have three collaborations.
whoaa! thats way cool! I definitely tried, I admit that I might have missed the target a little bit on where it came from haha
@Killdeer25 Nah, I think it went well with their whole Love Yourself/Jungian theme.
Excellent reaction. Appreciate your input based on your experience and background. You truly saw this song from a musicality, lyrical and vocal skill perspective. Looking forward to seeing more BTS content from you. Thank you.
Thank you so much! I definitely was inspired by what they sang about! Thank you for being here!
I do too, I think its pretty common that we have a fear of showing people our full selves, I still have goosebumps from this song
First and foremost, the first two verses of the song introduce the two characters of the isolated man and the young girl.
yeah, wow I totally missed that, I was very much looking at this from outside that for sure, I dont doubt that they made it more cinematic tho
La poesía cantada por cuatro ángeles , 💜💜💜💜

Your talk about masks prompted me to recommend you watch BTS' Fake Love MV as well, and perhaps a Live for that too.
Ohh yesss! I do need to get to that
If you really want to delve furthering into BTS I recommend watching A Guide to BTS the Bangtan 7 by Taylor and The Hardships of BTS from 2013-2021 by Xceleste. The Truth Untold A Beautiful Story by Rice Squad
I got the other two coming up, I did do the guide, I really enjoyed it
So wild that this was produced by Steve Aoki because it’s so different than his usual style 😂

Gracias a ti!
