If you want matte black, don't use satin or gloss clear coat. Pretty straight forward.

What paint should I use for it to be matte black?

I found that using that peel able rubber paint works really well for helmets and it dries extremely quick.
Does last after getting hit?
@@damonburton1872 probably not just like normal helmets after scratchs paint will rub or come off but scratchs look mewn so i dont see the prob
what if I have a white helmet with some deep scratches? can I sand it an go over with white spray paint.

if I play for a rep and highschool team with different colours. When I change my helmet from Silver to black then back to silver will the silver be the same and will it be safe?

the coating is not tough enough and it will 1) chip your helmets paint and 2) get on others peoples helmets
Have a red helmet and going all white. In the back it has the white rectangular warning sticker but on the left it has some manufacture clear coat lettering. Do I still scuff and sand and if I do will it get rid of it . I am trying not to get rid of it . Also I want to remove the warning sticker paint the helmet and put it back on . What's the best way to do that. Thanks
Hey man great video. I have a question that maybe you could help me out with. I just finished doing my first helmet. I did the old school Atlanta Falcons helmet because its my first time and that helmet is fairly easy, however, after painting the helmet using a glossy black paint, i got the glossy, shiny wet look that I wanted. Problem is, when i put the clearcoat on it, it dulled it significantly and i dont know why. This helmet doesn't necessarily have to be glossy so im okay qith what i have, but the next helmet is going to be an Army gold helmet and is supposed to be glossy. Im trying to figure it our before i start rhe second one, how to make sure the paint stays glossy. Do you have any advise?
Yah when you pick your clear coat go for the glossiest option. I made the mistake of using satin instead of matte. The lid will show you the finished look
How much does sanding it down really matter? Like what were to happen if I spray painted it without sanding?

How long do you let your helmet dry after putting on the second coat
Using a regular spray paint would be around 5-10 minutes but using a peel able rubber paint for cars is about 3 minutes. Plus when you use the peel able paint you don’t need to sand your helmet. And if you want to change it to another color then you simply peel add the paint and change the color.

What's the difference between a Satin finish and a Matte finish? Michigan switched from gloss to Satin. Why do you think there was a change?

You can put the helmet on top of a can or something tall like that and spray it if you don't want to tie it up

Several things wrong here 100 grit is way to aggressive to use on a helmet you want to use no more then a brown scotch brite pad to scuff it. You also don't use a sanding block on a rounded surface use your hand do it forms with the curve of it last and the most dangerous of all the mask you are wearing is not a respirator that will keep fumes out. That is a dust mask which is for dust it will actually trap the paint fumes in the mask so you are safer without it then with it

Does the helmet I paint have to be white? Because I have to paint my red helmet to a darker shade and I'm planning to use matte cardinal to paint it. Would it work?

Hey man, I tried to sand my helmet, but what i sand just scratched my helmet, It was never painted so it has a really thin paint witch came from the factory. Should I continued with the sand?

I hope you know that that voids the warranty also I bet if kid gets hurt and they watched your video you could get sued.
To get the helmet smooth you need to sand lightly with a fine sandpaper after paint has dried add another coat sand so on. Dude doesn’t know what he’s talking about

hey man great video, i'm just having trouble taking the helmet padding out because the air pump holes are on the outside and also attached to the padding on the inside, do you know how to take the padding out without destroying the air pump holes? ps its a riddell revolution
Fred Mertz well all the padding is made to be removed, although it goes against instinct really try to pry it out, i had the same problem with my speed, its made to fit very snug.

Unfortunately this guy isn’t very knowledgeable of paints. I wouldn’t trust this video for how to paint your helmet. You can’t just use any paint because certain paints can cause a chemical reaction that will weaken the material. You should also understand the difference among matte, satin, semi-gloss, gloss, and super gloss if you want the best finish. You should also understand the material you’re working with for your helmet and face mask so you know how the paint will react to it aesthetically once applied.

+Enzo primer first which usually comes in white or grey. Primer both hides the old colour and helps the new colour stick

Angel Mesa your helmet probably wasn't sanded smooth, sand that paint smooth and do another coat, the clear coat should smooth it as well

+Max M. primer is a coat of paint usually white that helps the actual paint stick better, using white also makes other colours like blue or red look more vibrant

Satin has more shine than matte, if you can believe it. should have not used Satin clear coat but rather a matte. i learned the hard way

+scottsdale51 It voids the warranty of helmet. It sucks but they only allow NOSCEA certified to paint it

I'm glad I found your video. I just ordered a hurling (I'm a camogie player) helmet and I want to mess with the color a bit. I don't think that I'll be able to sand it down...how big of a deal is it to do the sanding? I know it's preferred, but is it a major deal if I skip that part? Thanks.

I don't think Hurling helmets have the same varnish they're just coloured plastic so it should be fine

Hello nice work.i do have one that I'm painting to look like the vintage 95 Carolina Panthers. I'm having a hard time finding another helmet but I don't need a facemask with it.
