I saw this car up at Lime Rock last year and loved it, so i'm super happy I stumbled upon this video. Awesome car, hopefully i'll see it again in the future!
Beautifully done! I'm going to turbo my 95 next year and I think I'll go ahead and throw some ARP head studs in while I'm at it. Thanks for making this!
Woah Man, you were right when you said this car is pretty much complete! I'm amazed how all the modifications fit together to form the car. The sounds and power it makes, it's perfect! The look is very stylish, kept just the right amount of retro.Your car Sir, is a motivation to an 99' NB owner. I'm pretty much trying to save it from rust and change all the parts that need to be changed, but one day... I'd like something as good as yours :)
Love the car mate. It's understated, I like that you've used a smaller turbo and as a result it has good throttle response. It seems to be nice and torquey and the amount of power is just right for the car.
Awesome build! Your ITB car is freaking sweet too, living the dream. I've got a 92' with the original 1.6L and 196,000 miles, recently put down 236rwhp, the car is so much fun. I've got a little overview of it if you're interested. /watch?v=yuBZ2XkAYQ0
Absolutely love your cars and the channel. I saving my pennies to get an NA and begin my naturally aspirated build. Great video, keep the content coming!!
One of the cleanest and well sorted NA's I've seen man, NICE! I've has a couple Miata's myself, I have a couple vid's on my channel of the last car I had, I need another one...
Quinn, you should try to get a guest appearance on turbo toms garage podcast he does. u and turbo tom would be a crazy combo in the car world. I wish you were more popular in the car community. Hopefully you grow a little in popularity. Keep up the good work
I haven't heard of him, but I would open to it. I did a guest appearance on SuperSpeeders Rob's new podcast a couple weeks ago but the episode didn't air because of issues with the audio recording. I think at some point he is going have me back on.
Quinn Kizis check out toms turbo garage on youtube. He does amazing and extremely clean builds. he had a turbo NA miata with meth injection. right now hes doing an ls3 NB miata. And he does a lot of DSM stuff. just check him out
I really, really love the gauges, seats and "Will Joe fit" - thanks man, exactly what i was looking for (I'm also 6'5 and 3/4" =) Great work and dedication...
Nice ride. looking to sell my 92 stealth rt for one of these soon hopefully. Thanks for making this video, i'll use it as a base for an idea on how to build my future miata!
Looks girly with the top down? It's a convertible! Awesome work, I like that you've been so particular with the undercoating and refresh of all the stock parts. Greetings from a fellow Turbo 91 1.6 owner in CT.
+ThorinOaken YES!! Miata's are great first car builds. Not only because they are reliable and fun, but because of how cheap they are also. You can't beat the fun of a miata for the money.
yes they are simple to work on and also extremely cheap to repair and maintain. plus cheap on insurance. I have a 93 miata and it's only 35 a month to insure and 20 to fill it up.
Ive got a 96 which I rescued from a junk yard, then dropped in a kia BP. Plan was to turbo it, but I prefer NA linearity. Seeing how you have both, im curious as to which powerplant (Turbo vs ITB) you're preferable to, in the miata specifically.
I do have a question for you. Nothing to do with the actual build itself, but HOW THE HELL DO YOU KEEP DIRT FROM KICKING UP INTO THE BAY? Dirt got everywhere in mine, including on top of the valve cover, which was a bitch to clean because of the spark cables. But again, I love it.
Are you offroading the car? :P Stock has an underbelly pan that does a good job. I have a Beatrush undertray on this car because I couldn't retain the stock one with the intercooler piping.
This is like the greatest review ever. I have a 1996 Miata with 87000 miles I bought for 1800. Do you think this similar set up would work? If it does. Do you care if I copy you.
Ive owned quite a few NA6 and NA8 (1.8L) miatas. Totally dig your build man. Props. Clean and functional. Love the wheels subframe, new bushings, how do you like the tein flex? How are they holding up?
Quinn, You did a wonderful job of preserving the retro style intent of Miata designers while incorporating modern power and appearance enhancements. For sure you have a new subscriber! As I build my DIYPNP MS2 for my 2000 NB1, I find myself torn between installing a small turbo (GT2554R) vs. staying naturally aspirated. You mentioned going back to na on this turbo briefly. Would you prefer an all motor na build for street/open road touring with the occasional autocross at a target 175hp or would you stay turbo for those purposes? -Larry, former Triumph Spitfire Owner
Larry Strickland Have you seen my all motor 99 Miata videos? The car made 172 whp. For longer cruises, the turbo Miata is nicer because the engine is quieter being turbocharged and the gearing is longer 4.1 FD vs 4.77 in my all motor car. With a naturally aspirated streetable 13b rotary in favor of this turbo setup, I can do around 220-230whp and that would be pretty nice, although the exhaust will be louder. For steet, the lazy fast engine is usually nicer. However, I will say the most disappointing thing about driving this car is the lack of torque and power off boost, essentially a 100 hp from a stock 1.6. So certain turns I cannot pitch the car how I want to with the throttle and that takes away from the enjoyment of the car, for me at least. Neither of the Miatas are daily driven so I want to have fun when I drive them. The 1.8 NB with more torque lower and the gearing advantage makes for a fun car that is easy to hoon on the throttle, however highway cruise is annoying with the 4.77. So it's sort of like pick your poison. The new setup I am currently working on for the NB I think will make around 190-200whp, so I might be able to go back to a 4.3 and have the best of both worlds. Only one way to find out at this point!
I can surely see how the lack of torque and power off boost is disappointing. I just put an FM flywheel (10.3 lb) + clutch in and am enjoying the somewhat spirited response. I am really looking for more resolution to the lack of torque and power at the lower end. Here is how I see it: the damn car (in NB1 form) looks like a baby vette and it should scream like one. Perhaps FI turbo is indeed in my future. L.S.
2 questions. why did you keep the 1.6 instead of swapping in a 1.8? and also did your miata come with lsd? i feel like you're losing too much traction too easily
great car mate nice review! I've noticed that you didn't mention anything about the brakes you use. I have same gen 1.6 mx5, but the brakes are awful. Any upgrade suggestions?
Love your cars & channel! Just wanted to ask your opinion on building a 1.6 vs 1.8 motor for boost. I've recently acquired an na 1.6, which I will hopefully start building later this year. I'm still tossing up whether I strip the 1.6 and build it up with forgies and all the goodies or purchase a 1.8 from an NB and build that up then swap it into the car. In your opinion/experience, are there any real problems or benefits to either motor? I'll be shooting for around 280 - 300whp Thanks man
V6boosted The rods in both the 1.6 and 1.8 can support 275 whp and maybe even more with a good tune. We tried to boost more on my setup, but the turbo wouldn't make any more power after 18-19 psi. I don't think building either engine is worth it since your power levels are nothing crazy. The big difference aside from displacement is that the 1.8 heads flow much better than the 1.6. Rod to stroke ratio is the same, only bore is different. So if you are starting with a clean slate, buy a 1.8. The NB 1.8s have better flowing heads than the NA 1.8s.
Quinn Kizis Thanks for the info man. I know the engine can handle it for those power levels, though I want it to be able to be abused all day everyday and not break haha plus, like usual the power will keep increasing ;) One more question, The NA8 motor, is there any disadvantage/main difference over the NB's 1.8? I'm guessing the na8 is a straight no mod bolt in for the na?
Let's see if we can get quinn more subscribers/funding. This guy can potentially have a channel that is marketable across the board for zoomzoomers and rwd sports car enthusiasts alike.
Great video, I just got a Miata same year as yours and red as well. Has some stuff done to it but looking to make it faster like yours. Where do you recommended to start? What to mod first? Love your Miata man.
It depends on what you want to do with the car. If you wanted to say Auto-X it with SCCA ruling, little mods will bump you up in class rather quickly. I typically start with the suspension and chassis getting the car setup how I want it to drive before I throw power at it.
I am just kidding, I subscribed because I liked what I saw. I am a fellow red NA owner, and yours is pretty much how I would like to end up having mine. Nice job, nice presentation. If you allow me, though, to make one point. I think you must do something with your sound, like getting an external microphone for your camera or something. Your voice was not as loud as other noises. I know it's early, but I am just trying to help you improve your. Overall really good, keep up the good work.
Quinn Kizis I built my 91 Miata on a TD05 16G . Just wondering what exhaust your running? Not looking to have super loud exhaust. Nice to blend when not on it. Outside the car how loud is yours? Thanks Quinn. Killer build
I have no idea. I have done so much to this car over the last 11 years of ownership it would be near impossible to put a value behind every little tweak. I do all of my own work so I couldn't give you a labor cost either.
Not so much on this car since I bought it cheap. However, I wouldn't do it on a more expensive car since essentially you you are totalling the car in some regards and committing to flares. The wider wheels and track drive poopier. You get more tram-lining and the car looses some of its nimbleness feeling. In comparison, my NB Miata on a more conservative 16x8 +38 wheel and 215 tire feels better than this car.
Thanks for the info! I think I'm going to just baby this one. 89 all manual everything, no rust. I just picked up a beater 90 yesterday though. I might do something more sinister to that one.
Hi Quinn, who did the tuning for your Megasquirt ECU? I have a TII RX7 running MS2 that needs dyno tuned, but haven't found any local tuners in CT that know MS. Thanks
I did most of the tuning under the watch of my good friend. He is an awesome rotary builder/tuner, but unfortunately he lives in Russia now and only comes back for short visits.
That's unfortunate. I have it running well at 10psi, but just bought a water methanol kit and plan on turning up the boost once all this damn snow is gone. Glad to see there are other RX7 guys in CT that drive their cars as intended!
shainiac What turbo? You don't need water/meth inj to run more than 10psi. I have two FDs. One is a street ported 13b with a T04S at 16 psi making 417 whp on 93 pump gas. No issues whatsoever.
It's a Holset HE351VE. About the size of a GT35, but with a VGT hot side. The reason for water meth is that I have 9.7:1 rotors. In retrospect, I should have kept low comp, but it does spools quick.
Beautiful red Miata....I personally think the drifting video in the beginning shows how utterly ridiculous that whole thing is...bring that car to LimeRock and drive it ...btw in the old days we ran 13b rx7s out of Auto Trix in Freeport NY...we had some monster screamers in those days..
I really want to do the same thing INTERNALLY. To make around the same power but obviously not copy your build because thats lame :/ anyway I cant find the turbo and was wondering what turbo would you reccommend instead? Thanks
+Eshrekticism I would hope that you mimic setups that work instead of spending unnecessary just for the sake of being different :) Skip the Greddy turbo kit, there are better more complete offerings out there. If money isn't as big of a factor, the FM kits are nicely made and pretty complete. The Greddy stuff needs too many things changed and modified, then you run into fitment issues like the bigger downpipe, which is a huge pain in the ass to remove / install.
Quinn Kizis I am trying to mimic the set up internally, because he says that it works and has no issues, but I would just powder coat some things in the engine bay just to make it slighty mine :) and I have seen the FM kits which are awesome and seem to work very well. But 4k, right now, is a little too much for me for just a turbo kit. I know its worth it but would rather source the parts seperately for cheaper prices. Hence why I asked what other turbo to get because I couldnt find the mentioned turbo. I was planning on use the down pipe and BOV and such he used just a dif turbo
i love the gauges those are beyond gorgeous watching this is making me wanna get a miata
Those seats are gorgeous...
I love Miata's!!! The baby rx7!! Incredible platform to build off.
You've done a hell of a job with your miata. Plus you put it through its paces. Much respect.
I saw this car up at Lime Rock last year and loved it, so i'm super happy I stumbled upon this video. Awesome car, hopefully i'll see it again in the future!
I have lots of respect for you and the way you take care of your cars. I am the same way.
Not really a miata guy but this car is slowly changing my mind, might pick one up as a project, Great work and it looks fun to drive!
Beautifully done! I'm going to turbo my 95 next year and I think I'll go ahead and throw some ARP head studs in while I'm at it.

+TheCarPassionChannel Thanks man. I've seen your channel and your car before. Good stuff!
Lol now both of you have met IRL
Awesome video, liked that you cut out some scenes to add the car being driven. Cannot wait for the next few cars!
I haven't seen the whole video yet but the red Miata sounds amazing. It reminds me of my 240sx s13 coupe with an SR.
Absolutely love your cars and the channel. I saving my pennies to get an NA and begin my naturally aspirated build. Great video, keep the content coming!!
Clean little Mx-5, love your wheel choice.
Love the gauges and the steering wheel. Beautiful car.
Thank you!

watching this video makes me want a Miata, just like this... well done with the build.
You have beautiful Miata there. Good choice in mods. Makes me regret having sold my 92 Miata.
Nothing but respect bro all I can say is clean mx5
I really, really love the gauges, seats and "Will Joe fit" - thanks man, exactly what i was looking for (I'm also 6'5 and 3/4" =)
Great work and dedication...
perfect. i love tour attention to detail
You've one good styling Miata!
oh my, that NA is beautiful! It sounds mean too!
Nice ride. looking to sell my 92 stealth rt for one of these soon hopefully. Thanks for making this video, i'll use it as a base for an idea on how to build my future miata!
Amazing build! You've earned a subscriber, will look forward to more cars of great taste and enhancement.
Awesome video man, great work
damn man i like those flares on the side. sick really brings out the car look!
WOOOH Finally! Looking forward to more!
That sound...TwT beautiful...
Style and performance? What more can you ask for!?!? Hope to see that thing on the streets in CT one day!
chris lafonte Thanks man. If you are local, feel free to swing by some time.
cool built looks like a lot of fun to drive
What a beautiful build you have me considering selling my motorcycle for a miata.
Very well made, keep it classy!
great taste great mods
good job
Thank you!
Looks girly with the top down? It's a convertible!
Awesome work, I like that you've been so particular with the undercoating and refresh of all the stock parts.
Greetings from a fellow Turbo 91 1.6 owner in CT.
Love it. Makes me want another.
SO CLEAN!
And I have a rx8 trying to build your videos are helpful thanks 👍
Nice man! If there is anyway I can help, let me know 👍
Awesome video buddy
Love these vids bro. Keep em coming!
I dont know much about car, but i really wanna get into them. You think a miata would be a good first car build ?
+ThorinOaken YES!! Miata's are great first car builds. Not only because they are reliable and fun, but because of how cheap they are also. You can't beat the fun of a miata for the money.

Very nice I would love to have a similar setup
Great video! Can't wait for you to make one on your NB Setup! :D
The NB is the next in line.
one proper miata cheers!
Great job!
Best car on the market!!
nice car i have a 92 i'm currently working on.
Like your channel brother watch it all time I too live in ct
Awesome Mike. Thank you!
Sounds so good
Ive got a 96 which I rescued from a junk yard, then dropped in a kia BP. Plan was to turbo it, but I prefer NA linearity. Seeing how you have both, im curious as to which powerplant (Turbo vs ITB) you're preferable to, in the miata specifically.
Haha, as soon as the video started, I was like "Hey... That looks a lot like Lime Rock!"
Awesome car. Where did you get your wastegate actuator? I'm having the boost spike issue you mentioned, trying to run 15 psi.
Quinn Kizis Not at all. Just daily driving in Charleston! Never even seen dirt haha
***** I just try to keep up with washing the engine bay every so often so the dirt doesn't build up.
This is like the greatest review ever. I have a 1996 Miata with 87000 miles I bought for 1800. Do you think this similar set up would work? If it does. Do you care if I copy you.
okay that looks like fun
Great content, I'm supprised your videos and channel haven't gone viral like ThatDudeinBlue Keep up the great work.
Ethan
crazy clean...
My friend has 4 S2000 got 6 Miatas. Cuz he said much cheaper to go to the track, if you blow a motor, they are cheap to find.
Ive owned quite a few NA6 and NA8 (1.8L) miatas. Totally dig your build man. Props. Clean and functional. Love the wheels subframe, new bushings, how do you like the tein flex? How are they holding up?
really like those seats and have been wanting them for a while now, could you give me contact info to the guy you got them from? I live in Texas.
I really want to know what blow of valve your car has sounds so good!
I'd love to see this car at Miata's at the Gap.
Quinn,
You did a wonderful job of preserving the retro style intent of Miata designers while incorporating modern power and appearance enhancements. For sure you have a new subscriber! I can surely see how the lack of torque and power off boost is disappointing. I just put an FM flywheel (10.3 lb) + clutch in and am enjoying the somewhat spirited response. Perhaps FI turbo is indeed in my future.
L.S.
2 questions. why did you keep the 1.6 instead of swapping in a 1.8? and also did your miata come with lsd? i feel like you're losing too much traction too easily
Very tidy instalation !
Thank you!
Where did you buy the original turbo kit?
great car mate nice review! I've noticed that you didn't mention anything about the brakes you use. I have same gen 1.6 mx5, but the brakes are awful. Any upgrade suggestions?
I upgraded to the 1.8 caliper brackets and rotors and am using Hawk HP+ pads for street duties.
love the car !
I'll be shooting for around 280 - 300whp

One more question,
The NA8 motor, is there any disadvantage/main difference over the NB's 1.8?
I'm guessing the na8 is a straight no mod bolt in for the na?
Let's see if we can get quinn more subscribers/funding. This guy can potentially have a channel that is marketable across the board for zoomzoomers and rwd sports car enthusiasts alike.
Thanks man!
Wishing my 91' was like that haha What did you modify first?
How much have you put into your build? Estimate?
Great video, I just got a Miata same year as yours and red as well. Has some stuff done to it but looking to make it faster like yours. Where do you recommended to start? What to mod first? Love your Miata man.

18 PSI!!!!!! :O im running 6 psi on my td04 turbo and too scared to push it any further! I guess its all down to the mapping
@ around 17:00 In Flames for background music ->Liked and subscribed :D
I jam out to a very wide wide variety of music at the garage. Good ears ;)
Quinn this is inspiring! For turbo setup like this one do you have to remove the a/c system?
I live in FL.
Juan Chaparro My car wasn't optioned with A/C. I'm sure you can run a turbo setup with A/C and a little creativity in the intercooler routing.
Quinn Kizis I built my 91 Miata on a TD05 16G . Just wondering what exhaust your running? Not looking to have super loud exhaust. Nice to blend when not on it. Outside the car how loud is yours? Thanks Quinn. Killer build
Matt Drake BEGI 2.5" DP, 2.5" Test Pipe, 2.5" Flyin Miata catback. The exhaust is relatively quiet overall. You hear more turbo noise than anything.
Quinn Kizis thanks big help.
Any chance you could make a 0-120 mph video? On closed track ;)))
Is there a Microphone hidden in your coffee? 😄 Nice car! We ve got a NB from 1998.
COOL...!!!
Yo Arthur I’m a huge fan can u comment on my new vid
What do you do for a living?
how much would you say you've spent on this build?
nice ride man so how much did it cost to turbocharge the car with all parts and labor ? i plan on getting one of these and doing the same thing ?
I have no idea. I have done so much to this car over the last 11 years of ownership it would be near impossible to put a value behind every little tweak. I do all of my own work so I couldn't give you a labor cost either.
13b miatas are awesome. What port where you running on your FC? I'm going the klze route on my na miata and turbo II on my s5 vert.
Street Port. The car made 230 whp N/A with a custom header and intake manifold.
Wow that's impressive was it a dei 6 port conversion? That would definitely haul ass in an na.
what a beast
What do you think OP, would a 6'6 guy fit a stock NA? What kind of modification do you think are required to fit comfortably?
Birtalan Lóránt Maybe a Lotus Elise/Exige seat bolted straight to the floor. No matter what you are going to have a tough time fitting unfortunately.
Do you regret the flares? How was making the first cut?? I'm at this fork in the road currently. How did going wide affect handling?
Not so much on this car since I bought it cheap. However, I wouldn't do
it on a more expensive car since essentially you you are totalling the
car in some regards and committing to flares. The wider wheels and track
drive poopier. You get more tram-lining and the car looses some of its
nimbleness feeling. In comparison, my NB Miata on a more conservative

Would love to see a 13B go in that car, I would keep the turbo but its not my car lol
where did you tune it?
awesomnesssss!!!!
dude, come to ocean beach car shows down in NL
How tall are you since im 6'4 and i want a miata
Beautiful red Miata....I personally think the drifting video in the beginning shows how utterly ridiculous that whole thing is...bring that car to LimeRock and drive it ...btw in the old days we ran 13b rx7s out of Auto Trix in Freeport NY...we had some monster screamers in those days..
That drifting was from the cart track at Lime Rock. I sold the entire driveline and am putting a Peripheral Port 13b into it.
I thought that was LimeRock...Big Ben..after that long straight..did some serious brake stands on that spot.l
Howd you go about removing all the rust? Also what did you use to coat over it?
This is pertaining to when you were talking about the underside of the miata.
*****
Wire wheel and Rustoleum undercoating
Did you cut your fenders? For the wider wheels/flares
Yes I did.
I really want to do the same thing INTERNALLY. To make around the same power but obviously not copy your build because thats lame :/ anyway I cant find the turbo and was wondering what turbo would you reccommend instead? Thanks
+Eshrekticism I would hope that you mimic setups that work instead of spending unnecessary just for the sake of being different :)
Skip the Greddy turbo kit, there are better more complete offerings out there.
