I’m no rocket scientist but if I’m up a full piece against Magnus, I’m getting the queens off the board. Sure he will beat me in the end game because he’s an endgame master, but I’d rather be up a piece without the complications of queens

@james_dinham Unfortunately, yes, although nothing is certain yet. Janek has never been known for being forthcoming in interviews, but recently, after winning an online tournament, he surprised fans by giving a lengthy interview in which he shared his problems. In short, he mentioned that chess doesn't bring him the same satisfaction as it used to, especially in the classical format. When he wins, it feels normal and doesn't bring him much joy, but when he loses or draws in a foolish way, it can bother him for a long time. Even the recent World Championships, where he won a medal, didn't bring him joy and were even exhausting for him, even though it used to be his favorite format. You've probably noticed that he hasn't played in any significant classical chess tournaments lately; that's because he's been declining all invitations. Recently, he's also been skipping the online TT tournament, which he used to enjoy playing. Clearly, Janek is struggling with chess burnout, which shows how challenging the discipline of chess is.
