The multiband compression was eye opening. I avoided it for some time now because I didn't understand it well enough. It gave so much more impact than I expected.
the (very bad) feeling when you've been using that same exact c4 multi-band compressor plugin for a year without ever consciously realizing it's a multi-band....but hey at least it's my first year of mixing, lots more to learn...

Music production (like film production) is one of those fields where you can have 25 years of experience and still have so much to learn. Thanks for making it easy, man. Good tips!
Really appreciate this, Devvon. But we all know that the recording process is important too. Personally i think the crazy smooth sound comes from a good mic/preamp/interface chain. The processing is just to make it perfect in the mix. I would love to see a video on how to record professionally maybe even in a home studio. Which gear and stuff like that. Thank you
GARA Is a preamp essential though? I’m just starting out and I’m recording music in my room and sending it off for editing & mastering, will not having a preamp affect my sound?
@@MandiKae A top end microphone will lack some dynamic and detail if you use a cheap pre-amp. However if your microphone is lower quality than a Shure SM7b, an expensive pre-amp will only help its quality a little bit if at all. Invest in a better microphone and a mic booth first, and then a pre-amp might help.
The trick with the multi band compressor (Compressing the high end after boosting it) is AMAZING. So many producers use it and yet I could never fully understand it. Subscribed!
Hearing you discuss room noise really humanized your video, and made it seem like you're more in touch with the audience you are trying to target. Gained a sub, keep up the great work bro.

str8 up i learned more in 2 of your vocal videos than I have in watching a hundred videos from a hundred people. and out of all the videos, you sound most like denzel so basically im gonna tell people that denzel washington is teaching me how to sound like trey songz- you give new meaning to The Equalizer
This video was amazing, i love rewatching it and soaking everything up. Could we get a 2023 version of the “smooth vocals” chain? With 4 years passing by, i’m sure alot of this is still standard but also i’m sure you have learned so much and maybe updated certain techniques
Never be afraid to use a multiband compressor ladies and gentlemen! It’s essentially a dynamic eq (even more so if it using dynamic phase or linear phase algorithms). It’s been around for a very long time and is essentially a wide band to semi narrow frequency compressor. A dynamic eq on the other hand, was invented to remove specific frequencies (essentially having the narrowest Q’s possible) and can be used just like a multiband compressor (wider Q’s). A lot of producers I have met along this journey, all use multiband compressors. It’s even a must-have in all professional studios whether it’s a hardware unit or in a plugin. Also, de-essers can be considered one of the first dynamic EQ’s to exist. It’s been used in countless of songs for many years so don’t listen to people who say don’t use it or you don’t need it. Because you will at some point need it to have more frequency control in muddy to harsh areas and it will make the workflow much quicker.
Hey bro your videos are dope you cause you really do a lot of things that go against the grain that really works! I never though that trick with multiband on the lead and the EQ on the Reverb! Glad to see you back in music too bro, got worried for a sec!
Great video! One thing to mention is on the predelay it not only tells the reverb to come in later it's actually delaying the reverbed vocal, so if your saying "Stop" and the predelay is pretty high like 150ms if you listen closely the you will hear "Stop" delayed but reverbed. So this will extend/lengthen whatever you are reverbing, which you will need to be careful that you're not leaving tails over your next words coming in. What you may want to try is if you have a reverb that has an attack you can slow down the attack so you don't hear the "ST" of "stop" and it won't appear to delay. On the other hand you can leave the attack super fast and you're getting a delay and a reverb at the same time! So if you're doing this make sure if you're adding delay use an Aux track otherwise you are delaying a delay - which might be cool, but might not. Really cool video though, I enjoyed it!
A lot of ur techniques are things I've already been doing but you always show me a way to take it a step further. I always use vitamin instead of the C4 multi band but the idea is the same, and a de lesser after the multi band I've never even thought to run.
