  • Authors@GoogleNY is pleased to welcome Jon Ronson, author of "The Psychopath Test" as well as "Them" and "The Men Who Stare at Goats."
He will discuss his latest collection of essays entitled "LOST AT SEA". These pieces center on the idea of everyday people who find that ordinariness is not quite enough and look to the absurd to find whatever it is they think they're missing -- aliens, robots, game shows, hardcore Christian rap music, psychics...anything slightly out of the realm of the normal that might make a regular guy feel a little more alive.

Which internet user ever slagged off Jon Ronson, he's the poster boy for neurotic geeks who can still be cool and likeable.

I like that Jon suggests to a room of people at Google that tax evasion is due to psychopathy

He was supposed to promote his latest book "Lost at Sea" but I guessed he lost track of himself. This guy is quite the character...

The hatred of Freud of the guy who hates Freud is so so Freudian.

I hope Jon Ronson isn't suggesting that ADHD is an 'invented' condition, because he seems to be doing exactly that. I have ADHD, I've suffered the symptoms all my life (it's a condition one's born with) but wasn't finally diagnosed until I was 55.
It is a PHYSICAL MALFORMATION OF THE NEURONS IN THE BRAIN, it is NOT something somebody made up on the spur of the moment at some meeting where a load of psychiatrists were brain-storming ideas.

An acquaintance of mine told me he was diagnosed as a sociopath as a child and also while serving in the army in Iraq. They trained him as a sniper and he told me he had absolutely no moral qualms about his job and how insidious other sociopaths were especially outside in civilian society.

Not sure who you are or where you met this guy, but they ALL say they were snipers, esp if they're trying to impress a girl in a bar. If everyone who said they were a sniper was a sniper, the armed forces would be 99% snipers and no logistics employees, cooks or mechanics. Probably still a sociopath but not likely to have been a sniper.

If 1% is high than I should consider myself "lucky" to have met more than one psychopath during my short life?

with regards to the last question,
personally, i believe Robert Hare's statistic that roughly 1% of the population are psychopaths. just as with any other personality disorder, there are varying degrees of intensity within a wide range of observable traits.
plus, it's almost counter-intuitive for the untrained psychologist to diagnose an "unethically outgoing" person as a psychopath. it's much easier to self-diagnose yourself as comparatively timid.

look at how Jon picks at the label during the Q & A.. i'm no psychologist, but that looks like a stereotypical case of generalized anxiety disorder
