Oh, the brave New World of 1959, when the original DMUs were being described as “light, comfortable and fast”. The originals had bus type seats and their acceleration, via their 4 gears was snail-like. Fast meant 70mph tops. The commentary also referred to the disaster of allowing Western region to go its own way from 1962 with a family of unreliable and complex diesel hydraulics, which hardly lasted 10 years in mainline service with withdrawals starting only 3 years after the last of the production run came into service. There still is no electrification south of Bristol or west Weymouth, a mere 65 years later.

Boozing in the pub carpark. Back then the toffs always has a couple of pound notes in their driving licence in case they got pulled over by Plod pissed. Buy a couple of tickets for the Police Ball or for the widows and orphan fund perhaps?
