So RUclipsRed can make a documentary on the life of Gigi Gorgeous (a trans woman who started on youtube) and profit off of it but restricts the children who might be going through the same thing from seeing it. Brilliant.

I honestly can't believe RUclips. First of all, taking out the part with the LGBT+ community being banned from RUclips, this is meant to protect kids from inappropriate content. But if your kid is on RUclips and watching inappropriate content in the first place, that is the parent or guardians fault. Now adding the part with the LGBT+ community being banned, it's bullshit. A women holding hands with her partner in a vlog? Apparently that's inappropriate now. A man kissing his partner on the cheek? Inappropriate. A MTF updating on their surgery? Inappropriate. A non-binary person coming out to their family? Inappropriate. It's complete bull. If we keep raising kids to ignore the LGBT+ community and act like it doesn't exist, more and more kids are going to commit suicide and more and more kids and going to be depressed. We need to teach kids that this is completely normal. So you like guys and girls? That's normal. You only like guys? That's normal. You don't like sex or any relationship? That's completely normal. Start teaching kids this, please.

I was made aware of this just today and when I looked about 30 of my trans related videos have been age restricted. I genuinely cannot believe that this is happening, but here we are. Videos related to identity and education being flagged makes absolutely no sense to me.
This happened to me too. Straight videos with sex don't get blocked but my lesbian playlists get blocked even if there is not any sexual content at all.
By restricting videos you're not 'keeping kids safe', you're ensuring that groups of kids aren't safe because they can't find out that they're not broken or wrong in some way. If there's people that don't want to see that content then they don't have to watch it, it's that simple. Nobody is forcing it down their throat, but to not have it there and have hate and fear mongering constantly around lgbt kids is going to hurt them more.

As a kid who thought he was broken, cause he didn't feel like a girl, you're gross. I am still a teen, but am MUCH happier now that I figured out that I wasn't broken.As a side note, No-one 'thought' of "Gay and gender changing". We just are, and as an addition, we don't "change gender", we just present as the one we feel.
Petition to add a bit of LGBT+ content to all of our RUclips videos (maybe sharing a fact, tidbit, or putting a pride flag in our thumbnails). What will they do then?

Honestly, right now it looks like the only way to check is to turn on restricted mode and check your channel to see what's missing. I sent you screenshots on twitter of the first few videos on your channel to see what was restricted. It looked like most of your stuff was available,

People whose argument against Rowan's points is that LGBT content sexualises children and forces them to think about sexuality before an age where this is appropriate, please have a look at near enough any children's magazine. These publications assume heterosexuality and 'force' it upon children by these standards through their fascination with 'relationship goals' and crushes on the opposite gender, as well as a certain level of sex education usually in the agony aunt and problem pages. Restricting videos such as homosexual marriage vows and education denies people of equal treatment in this respect and while this is a mainstream media problem, RUclips should understand their social responsibility to be the voice of minority groups in the media and act in a way that reflects these values.
i love that you get so angry and then continue on to talk cohesively, its a skill that i dont always have when im angry amd so its nice to watch one of your videos and just go "YEAH WHAT SHE SAID"

This absolutely horrible, but unfortunately not surprising. It still baffles me that anyone can seriously say that they aren't against LGBT+, but they don't want it around children. By saying that children shouldn't be exposed to it, you are inherently saying that is bad. You cannot have one without the other.
Thank you for doing something about this, and letting others know. I hope we can get them to respond to this issue, one way or another.

Oh man I just found out about this today and it's so surreal - every film I've made with LGBT characters vanishes in restricted mode. And the connection to LGBT history - to the censoring of our relationships as inappropriate - is so upsetting.
And like with my films I've worked hard to make sure that they're 100% appropriate for younger viewers. There's no depiction or even mention of sex and no one even swears - the only thing left to be "inappropriate" is LGBT people.

even if only 5% of people were LGBT (which is not true), those 5% are still extremely important. or are a few (apparently, about 75) million kids unimportant? LGBT+ teenagers are at least twice as likely to try to commit suicide compared to straight teenagers. The rates are especially high when you only look at trans teens. Those numbers are obviously heightened when those LGBT+ kids feel alone and have no support. This shocks me. When I thought it was hiding swearing etc for under 18s I understood it but this is bad. Restricting LGBT content for kids perpetuates the same barriers, stereotypes etc for future generations. 😭
Interesting! I had a different run-in with RUclips's restricted mode recently: I do yoga at work on lunch at my school board office's gym, and I use RUclips videos from one of my favourite RUclips gurus as a guide. ALL of her videos are safe for kids in my experience, yet the video for helping PMS and cramps was not available in restricted mode 😕 Definitely useful for kids to know about and it wasn't inappropriate for kids at all!

That's another form of censorship that people so often forget about :/ women's bodies are so often sexualized in the media and the larger world, and it leads to situations like this, or where young girls feel ashamed about their perfectly normal bodily functions, or where people don't see period products as necessary hygiene products or as luxury items (and tax them as such). Sexism sucks.
Similar thing is happening on my channel too. Not only are all of my LGBT+ videos down, but also all of my videos on women's health, the 19th amendment (not sure why those were controversial), and black lives matter.

Don't you know? Only adults get periods. Kids don't need to know about cramps! If they're bleeding and in pain they should be led to believe there's something wrong with them.
I have had restricted mode on with my brother's account since we set it up for him about a year ago (he's 8 now and we got sick of getting Minecraft video recommendations on our accounts). I'm considering turning it off on his account now because if he is LGBT+ like me than I know that this community can drastically change his life for the better especially since we don't have an accepting environment at home.

Wow. This is not right at all. I agree that content needs restricting (when it's dangerous, graphic or adult) but not to the point of practically removing stuff and making it look as if people aren't posting anything and not for stuff like this at all!!! I found out about this yesterday, but was only aware of it censoring swearing, but this!? THIS IS NOT OKAY!

This is beyond disturbing and disgusting. I am not a member of the LGTBQ community and I cannot possibly add to this conversation or discuss. But I will not sit by and ignore it, I will be the best ally I can be a help by sharing your voices and making sure awareness is spread. I'm so so sorry this is the reality and it's happening; it's tragic and just, as I said, disturbing beyond comprehension.
Why is RUclips aping mainstream media by censoring LGBT content? I welcome any more videos you want to do on this topic, even if it's re-doing the same video. This is outrageous & whether rant, ramble, or measured response it's more than justified.
I'm from the UK in an all girls private school but my school has an openly gay male deputy-head and we have had two lesbian teachers and a bisexual male teacher. I'm kind of lucky in the accepting attitudes from the school and most of the pupils. I was talking with one of the lesbian teachers about her getting married and some of the younger years were asking about how the gay teacher met his husband. We have also had assemblies on LGBTQ related stuff. I can't believe youtube is doing this :(

At my school it was listed under "alternate lifestyle choice" made doing a project about lgbt people quite difficult.

Wow, I did not know this was happening on RUclips still. I really hope that this is some sort of system error because RUclips has become such an important part of our modern culture and for me personally it has given me a form of connection to other people in many different communities.
My guess is that there aren't actually people reviewing the content but computer systems and they have "red flag" words that they use to determine if something is deemed inappropriate of violating ToS.
So looking through the Restricted settings, it says it blocks content flagged by other users. Flagging spam and harassment automatically flags the whole video as well. I'm willing to bet this is a HUMONGOUS contributor to the problem given the number of trolls LGBT videos and channels attract. So if trolling comments are being flagged for deletion, then the videos are being flagged as possibly unsafe or controversial.
The more I look at this the more it LOOKS like an algorithm problem. I just hope they're working to resolve it and work the kinks out of their automations. :/

This kind of thing enrages me. I'm the mother of a so far cis/het boy and want him to be exposed to as many different ways of being human as possible. We read widely, but other forms of media are sorely lacking in any sort of representation of gender or sexuality outside the binary.
My kid can watch the most white/cis/het/abled stereotypical dreck where the guy is considered charming and persistent for continually hitting on the girl who keeps turning him down and the boy who has "feminine" traits is often the butt of the joke, but we can't see kids talking about what it feels like to be outside the represented population??
I don't need my kid to be protected, I can do that for him. And it's not by someone else deciding what he can and cannot be exposed to.
as someone who often looks up lgbt content online, this has been a part of youtube evr since I can remember. I subscribed to the website because the restricted videos can only be accessed if you have an account proving you are over 18. But tumblr as well...until very recently, words like lesbian were considered an over 18 tag and restricted.
I never cared for the restricted mode before, but if it's doing this that is fucked up and we need to end it.

I wasn't even aware that a restricted version of YT existed but wow, filtering out LGBT content is so damaging to all of us but especially to those who might need it most like kids and teens.
This is awful. I know there have been similar issues with broadband providers, etc. Completely unacceptable from a platform that often trades on being LGBT friendly (well completely unacceptable anyway). Is there a useful way to tackle it or raise the issue?
I am utterly appauled by all of this. As a young viewer I could of really done with these types of videos from the community and even now as a 23 year old, lgbt videos are so helpful and ugh i'm just so disappointed with youtube..

It's ridiculous that people still think LGBT content is inappropriate for children in 2017.I go to a LGBT youth group and when my cousin asked about it my auntie said "Oh it's for people with problems".That pissed me off a little.This is the same woman that lets him watch action movies rated 15.He's seen Deadpool.
I copy/paste the title of this video on RUclips search engine and it shows up as long as the Restricted mode is off. However if I turn on the Restricted mode I can't find this video although I can find many LGBT videos but this is not one of them.
I just checked my channel and 70% of my videos are gone. Being bisexual all my videos about guys are gone but the story times with girls are still there. Even my cooking videos are gone because i cook topless and i don't even talk or do inappropriate stuff when I'm cooking! WTF
We have a transgender teacher at our school, he actually joined before transitioning and was known as Miss M and now he's Mr E (shortened names for privacy) and multiple other LGBT members of staff & there's so many openly LGBT 6th Formers & our 6th Form Pastoral leader is in a gay relationship (I think they're married & they have adopted kids) basically my school is super accepting (it's in the UK & just a normal comprehensive secondary school & 6th form) so I guess we're super lucky judging by the other comments!

I want to know what are the rules they are using, because I make "safe" content, but my channel is hidden on restricted mode. Also my Sober video is hidden. Bing found any video where he swore was hidden and makes him think it's through audio recognition of certain keywords.
It's really awful and weird. I have NO idea why so much lgbt content, even as you said the mention of having a gf, has been hidden. There is literally no reason :/

In my country Moonlight was originally gonna be rated not for people under 16. Then it was thankfully lowered to 12. If it had been about a straight man, no doubt it would have been automatically considered family friendly. :(

At my school we had this day where we would learn about body positivity, how important friends are, and about LGBT+ acceptance. We only had it for one year and the school said they discontinued the event because of low student attendance, but a teacher told me after school that they cancelled it because a nearby church petitioned the administration because our school was "spreading the homosexual agenda"
My high school's Gender Sexuality Alliance was the only club barred from the activities fair for first years because members of staff thought it would be "inappropriate".
What can we do about it?
Well done for speaking out on this Rowan - had many conversations about LGBT issues with my kids sparked by RUclips videos, this just isn't addressed adequately in schools if at all and RUclipsrs such as yourself are doing a great job having these conversations in an accessible way that kids will listen to and discuss themselves
Thank you for speaking out about this. I maintain a gameplay "Let's Play" style channel, and because of my sexuality I have "lesbian" in every tagged video. I want other gay women of any age to be able to be able to find their way to my channel should they share similar interests. Many popular youtubers in this genre of media production are cis white straight men with few exceptions. I see now I may be hindering my channels growth because youtube thinks my lifestyle in inappropriate. I haven't the words.

This was such an informative and well articulated video, , going to a school that openly supports the LGBT community and even has assemblies on it, I find it scary that a huge social media such as RUclips is allowing this to happen, whether it's an accident or on purpose!
Thank you so much for this Rowan. I was sort of suspicious that this was happening on some videos such as Arielle Scarcellas but brushed it off being to do with explicit sexual content. However, the fact it's happening on videos that are incredibly informative and educational pieces such as yours or just on a video where an LGBT person is mentioned or seen is abhorrent!

Just tried this out, and this video itself is blocked, unsurprisingly. Also, decided to check out Kat Blaque's RUclips channel, it turns out she only has around 5 or 6 videos entirely when restricted mode is on.

Thank you! This video is so important. At my channel videos where I speak to my young viewers out there telling them that it is okay to be diffrent or videos where I stand up for tolerance and that we should not accept homophobia or videos where I show that body issues should not take away your happiness or videos where I talk about how I survived depression and that it gets better if you're in the same position as I was... All this videos are gone in restricted mode.
That's not something we should tolerate.
Also if a video is about something lgbt related it's not automatically sexual or "inappropriate". I would have been so thankful to be able to watch certain lgbt youtubers back in the day I was insecure about my sexuality.

You know resricted mode is probably enabled on videos automatically by a robot that just looks for some broughed key words I'm sure if you contact RUclips they would hopefully get someone to review your videos and unrestrict all the ones that truly should not be restricted. At least maybe I here that youtubes communication with creators can be crap.
This is also happening to trans youtubers like uppercaseCHASE1. Trans education videos are being age restricted almost immediately after being uploaded and its hurting both potential trans youth that needs the info as well as the content creator.
I hope we find a solution to this problem since its icredibly harmful to young lgbt+ people, myself included.
Maybe I would have figured out I was trans sooner, had resources like this been given to me. You're not trans, and you honestly don't, and will probably never, understand why are angry about this.

oh my god, i had no idea this was a thing. I just spent only 5 minutes looking through this and i'm already horrified. They even take down videos of female youtubers talking about their youtube girl crushes, anything that might imply lgbt+ ideas simply disappear, it's scandalous. Calum's channel is basically blank, and I have no doubt that's the case of many others I haven't checked yet. It makes no sense, it's ridiculous and it's making me very angry.
