My son used to love playing on that boat, it was a Taiwanese fishing boat, it was being renovated by a mine worker. At the back of the island was a small beach you used to have climb down a rope to get there. I had many happy days there but never stayed in the rooms. It was a great place to escape the rest of Bougainville for a few hours.

That's very interesting. It's still a great place to escape for a while! A stunning spot.

Hope Bougainville can become independent and stable, so all this is developed and protected again

I remember this place very well. It's best days were in the late 1970s. It was still around in the 1980s but by then it was well and truly in decline. The buildings were beautiful - tall steeply sloped roofs. As explained, there were also well manicured lawns and orchids. There was a classy restaurant (well for a while anyway) that served fine wines and did the full thing and where the specialty, naturally enough, was fish. There was a dance floor that was used for a brief period (this was the disco era). There was also a bar with a piano, which I remember occasionally attracted some good players.
It was a place that started with big ambitions and it was beautifully done. But the isolation of Bougainville meant that it frequently struggled - the costs of going there and operating there - so it basically became a weekend day spot for expatriate workers.
You couldn't beat that place though on a nice day. The beach and reefs were unbelievable.

This all sounds very familiar from the tour I had with locals who recalled similar fond memories. A wonderful place.

I lived on Bougainville in 1972/3 working for Trans Australian Airlines and have many fond and slightly drunken memories of Arovo. Would love to revisit one day.

Crazy how my parents partied here while us kids just enjoyed the island. I remember that we walked to the other side of this little island where the waves were bigger. I used to climb into that ship wreck. The dolphins on the way there and back was something a kid like me looked forward to every time we travel to Arovo.

Ah the memories, Sunday BBQ's with the families, with live music - weekend stays and great dinner nights. After SCUBA diving on nearby Japanese shipwrecks we could come here for a beer or two or some snorkeling off the beach. We were there from '71-'74 and during that time my parents visited for a fortnight. When they saw Arovo, or Pub Island as we called it, they thought they'd arrived in Paradise and didn't want to leave. The resort had its own ferry running between Kieta and Arovo. All part of a wonderful three years on Bougainville.

I remember it well - it was the only place my boyfriend and I could share a a big bed LOL! We were both in single quarters up at Panguna- and we'd escape to Arovo Isl frequently for the weekend. The snorkeling off the beach was the best I've ever had and I've snorkeled all over the world. This was 1986 - I remember the resort having the big high pitched roof lines - and fans - sliding glass doors with a view across to the sea. Warmer than Panguna- but not so hot you needed a/c at night . The food was OK - the booze abundant! 1986 - if tourism ever starts there again I'd definitely return.

It used to be a very popular spot with a resort, however nowadays the resort isn't operating, so its much quieter, but still a beautiful little island.

I worked for an Australian company that installed about 1600 solar water heaters in Arawa in 82/83 for BCL. We worked 6 days a week and this was our retreat on Sundays most weekends.
Good steaks and cold beer. Snorkelling and walking around the island relaxing. Sorry to see it in this state but great memories. The movie house in Panguna was our other escape.

What a wonderful place to relax. Joe, the guy in the video used to work on the island and was also the boat driver to the island and back too in the 80s. He had a lot of stories from the good times at this place! 🙂

We feel so sad to see the present condition of Arovo Island. We had been to Arovo for so many times and spend the day over there. Good food, enjoyable “Sing Sing” and good drinks. We could recognise the every details of that place, even now. The place was so Vibrant at that time. We wish to go there again. Thanks Adam for your post.

You're most welcome. It's still a very beautiful spot and nearby Pokpok is a stunning spot too. I would spend many a weekend at Pokpok during my time in ARoB. Many thanks for watching all the vids and pleased they're bringing back some happy memories.

The Bougainville Jazz Band played on Arovo a few times in the late 70's. The concrete pad, where we played, was where I lost one of my contact lens while playing. We had everyone on the dance floor on their knees looking for the bloody thing. Last time I wore contacts. This place and wonderful experience hasn't left me. Thanks for the 'tour'.

The combo of dolphins and that soothing music in the start just got me a lot more homesick now. Europe is still cold. I don't know when the summer heat is coming out. hehehe. must be corona.

I remember being hit in the head by the wings of two giant horn bills (pets of the resort) that would swoop down and steal your fries (chips) off your plate when dining outside. The surrounding reef was pretty unique as it had a higher variety of corals and fish concentrated in one small area as compared to other reefs in region (which were also quite beautiful). Unfortunately, bomb fishing has destroyed most of it and other reefs in the area.
