"Sergeant Stubby: The Most Decorated Dog of WWI

  • From 1914 to 1918, tens of millions of young men suffered the horrors of the Great War: the trenches, the maddening din of artillery, the hail of machine guns, and the deadly fog released by gas attacks. Almost 10 million of them never returned home.
But even when trudging through the mud, the mist, and the misery, millions of men could count on an army of brave and loyal companions: some 16 million animals who served on both sides of the conflict.
Horses, pigeons, and dogs were conscripted to transport supplies, serve as messengers, stand guard, or even provide first aid.
Dogs proved rather versatile, as they hauled weapons and supplies, carried messages, killed vermin in the trenches, detected enemy scouts, and stood guard. As many as 10,000 canine friends were trained to find wounded soldiers in no man's land. They became known as “mercy dogs”; clad in a Red Cross vest, they carried a first aid kit, water, and liquor to comfort wounded troops.
In today’s Biographics, we are proud to bring you the story of a small mongrel who could, and did, perform all of those duties. More astoundingly, our friend was not conscripted. In fact, one may argue that he volunteered.
This is the story of “Sergeant” Stubby, the most decorated dog of World War I.

If you see a dog wearing a vest make sure to ask the owner if it's alright to pet the dog, as it may be a service animal and they're not supposed to be just petted at random. But as long as the owner is alright with it the dog will gladly accept pets.

When a Dog is treated like family.. it is a natural pack behavior. Family..
Cats? Neither symbiotic or parasitic.. more like complementing each others natural ability to reach our goals..
Pigeons? Absolutely saved lives in many cases.
      Horses, mules, donkeys..
Most of the humans weren't so keen on the war either..
      Be Well.. 😀

I love dogs so much. My kittle 15 lb Luna helped me chase a palmetto bug many years ago. She heard me in the garage when it spooked me running under the recycling bin. She came from the laundry room where she slept and then chased it towards my dad's SUV. We went around it to get the bug, but it had stayed hidding underneath it. Luna looked up at me as if to say "I've got this!" And ran under SUV chasing it back out the other side where I smashed the bug. Luna passed a year and half ago at almost 18 years. RIP my little Lunita lunera 😢

If it was possible to add pics to the comments I have a feeling this comment thread would be full of dog pictures. I also have a Staffy, Blue. He's an ESA and also helps do DPT for my physical pains. I'm also lucky enough to work at a dog daycare and can say that animals in your life will absolutely improve the quality of life you live. Sergeant Stubby also ensured the lives of his fellow men. But if anyone knows how he pulled off that salute please let me know, because my Staffy can't get his paw up that high without dipping his head a lot.

Not a dog fan, but there have been dogs in my life for most of it. We got a dachshund-terrier mix when I was about 5. She was PTS my 2nd year of college. While she was supposed to be my brother's dog, she slept in my room most of her life. In the early 1980s my roommate agreed to taking in a dog. While she did most of the work of feeding her and stuff, I was the one who kept having to fix the fence to keep her in the back yard. She took the move to the house I live in and passed in the mid 1990s, she was probably about 13. A new roommate moved in with her dog, which got out of the yard during a thunderstorm while I was picking the roommate up from work. About 6 months later she decided she wanted another dog. This was in 2000. In 2005, the roommate's father was talking about taking the dog he had kept because his granddaughter had asked him to do so, then never came to see it. This dog was now 5-ish, about the same age as the roommate's dog. So, for the first time, I said I'd take it. It would've been different if he'd still been a cute puppy but he wasn't. When the roommate's dog started failing, the roommate wanted to get another dog to take her place. We went to the shelter and got one. That was in 2014 and he's still with us. But when both of the old dogs died in 6 weeks of each other, she wanted another dog because Boe - the dog - was "lonely." We adopted a pit mix who had to be PTS last summer, the vet thought she might have cancer, but since she had quit eating and mostly quit drinking, there wasn't much we could do.

Yeah so this story is about my beagle Freckles that we had till I was about 8 or 9. She was a thick girl and I swear to DOG she knew which days I was off and which days I was at school in Kindergarten. So on the days I was at school she would literally be waiting for me to come home at the door we came in (it was a side door connected to the garage) and then on days I was at home she would wait for me to finish breakfast and get dressed and then she woulld plop herself in front of the tv and look over me like "u coming?" I would lie on her side (a) i was really small so when I 5 I looked like I was 3 and b) it was more how u lean against a pillow when u sit in bed) as my pillow and we would watch cartoons together and she would lick my face and ear (probably to get the remains of my breakfast) as we watched.
