I got told a lot "we wont use this in real life" when I was in school. Turns out, the less educated you are, the more you can benefit from knowing those things. 👍 For example, I was a framer and a tile setter. There's a considerable amount of math there. Also, if you want to lift efficiently (which is something I have to do since im a shorter guy. Im only 5'6" and all of 140lbs, soaking wet. Seeing me on a construction site is usually a humorous thing for others....until we start working 😂 ), its best if you understand leverage, simple machine principles (ramps, pullies, levers) and energy management. They all can allow you to lift or move things others seemingly cannot.... all because you are working smarter and not harder. 👍
An example that stick out: on one job, we had a day worker that was a hard worker, great work ethic. He was also very tall and strong....which is why he was there that day. We had removed trusses from an older building and were recycling them. The guy we hired tried his best but he struggled a ton to get those trusses off the roof (which was flat) and pass them down to me (i was on the ground level, he was to hand them to me, then I would stack them). He kept trying to lift them from the outside or the top, sometimes.
So, I showed him how I did it. I got in the middle of the truss and lifted it up about hip height. I carried it to the end of the roof and set it down, got to the outside of the truss, then lifted it up. I used the roof as a leverage and slid it down to where he could reach it.
If yoy grab from the center, the weight is distributed. If you grab from the outside, all the weight is forward of you, meaning you are now the the fulcrum of the lever and the truss has the advantage....so, you make it much harder on yourself doing it that way.
Using the roof for leverage allows mote conrtol. if, for some reason, the person on the ground isnt able to grab the truss, you can simply pull it backwards onto the roof until the majority of the weight is no longer over the edge of the roof, them just set it down. You can also, if needs be, put pressure on your end of the truss and the roof will lift the other end. This means you can quickly and easily stop movement if an emergency occurs.
If you just try to manhandle it.... which the poor dude did...you can get hurt...and he did. not bad but he was hurting after lifting wrong.
