Thanks so very much! I miss the vibrancy that South Bend had when I was a child. I now live in Chicago, which is an "alive" city. Whanever I go back to visit South Bend, I see more and moer places where old buildings used to be, but which are now just empty lots. The old buildings that remain are often boarded up. It hurts, and it just saddens me.
I live here now, on IUSB campus! I knew there was a baseball park here before student housing, but I never knew there was an amusement park! Think how much more fun college would be if it were still here! But looking at the other comments: yes, South Bend is a dying city. All of the factories that built this town are closed down: Singer, South Bend Toys, Oliver, and Studebaker. There are probably many more, but those are just the ones I know. It seems it's mostly a college city now. Notre Dame, Saint Mary's, Holy Cross, Bethel, and my very own IUSB are all located here, as well as smaller campuses.
There used to be a casino/pavilion there that had dances. A local promoter named Wiley Hoover brought in chitlin' circuit acts like B.B. King, Ray Charles, Ike & Tina Turner, Jimmy Reed (the late great John Brim told me he played there once with Jimmy).
Thanks so very much!
