@@NicolasSANTOS-u2b Today's chainsaws are running very close to the edge of their performance envelope with 50:1 fuel-air mixtures. This is to 'save the environment', my dealer tells me. My older saws are running on 32:1 mixtures, are therefore well-lubricated, and are pretty much indestructible. My oldest saw is an early 1970s Homelite XL-12 and no matter how hard I work it I can't break it. Today's saws are lighter and probably burn a tiny bit less fuel, but are meant to be somewhat disposable.
Wow! I've never seen such a filthy fuel tank! Yet the carb was clean as a whistle. That just shows the importance of the clunk filter in the tank. Great diagnostics!
I tell people time and time again. The best thing you can get for saving you problems with a saw is a paint brush. Use it to clean around the caps when you fuel/oil up so stuff doesn't get into the tanks.
It's been many years ago that I worked in a small engine shop, but I remember having to try to convince many people that it was not cost effective to fix their Poulan Wild Things!!! 😁
Wow! Thank un,Erica. I realized that i dont know nearly as much as i thought. This mechanic was schooled by an awesome technician.Gosh, im humbled. Thanks for the knowledge.
So, put every part in a box and ship it to me. I'll pay for the shipping. It seems such a waste just using it for parts especially since it's all diagnosed. You can easily get another 15 years out of it. Also, thanks for supporting "The Greasy Shop Rag", I have one of his stands too and it makes a difference.
DO YOU SELL REBIULDABLE CHAINSAW FOR THE GEARHEAR THAT HAS NO PROBLEM TEARING DOWN A CHAINSAE REPLACING THE BEARINGS AND SEALS REBILDING THE CARBURETOR, RAPLACING THE RINGS, PISTON, CLINDER
Thank you for posting this excellent video! I enjoyed watching it. You have really superb diagnostic skills and years of experience. You also have a great tool collection. I like the carburetor stands.
Erica- I just rewatched this video and the racing go carts intrigue me! Is there any link as to rules? Looks like a hoot and winter racing would be even more exciting 😊. Thanks for your input!
I'd like an overview for these racing mowers. Just some high level stuff. Like what is the displacement limit? What are the engine modification limitations? Same goes for the transmission side. Is there a ratio limit, or pulley limits? What about brakes?
Nice Video as always.Step by Step you figured out whats going wrong. This ist the right way. its the choice of the owner not to repair that thing, and you can sell a new one.Thats your busines! In Germany you can get an MS251 for 500Euro, thats the cheapest price you can get.The normal Price is 669 Euro Thanks for the entertainment, i like it. Have a good week.
I'd be cautious about putting the camera in the tank unless you know the lens will be unaffected by fuel, could end up with a foggy lens. Also depending on where the light source is located (lens end or camera end) you could be putting an electrical item into an explosive atmosphere.
STIHL has some that has a blue hue but the most blue one I have seen is that crappy one in the pouch Opti-2 or whatever. The one that is supposed to work for 40:1 and 50:1
Great videos Erica, I'm learning a lot watching your videos. Getting more confident in my ability to troubleshoot small engines. I have a husqvarna in my shop that my neighbor gave me and, after watching all your videos, I'm eager to shake the dust off of it and get it running again. How long have you been doing this?
I love the chainsaws, but in my life I bought a snwoblower and it came in box dissasembled. Yikes! 5 cables I don't know how to hook up even though I've read the manual thoroughly and looked at the corresponding figures. So, I'll be calling technical support. Need to see a snowblower video, lol.
Just out of curiosity, did the customer have to pay for the diagnosis? If so, how much more would the seal replacement have been, since the saw was already torn down? I guess I’m asking, how much would the repair have cost vs. $450 CA for a replacement. FYI, the MS250 is my saw. Mine is 11 years old and still runs like a champ. Drains the bar oil out on the workbench, but runs great.
It's amazing how people get dirt in their fuel tanks. Whether it's from filling in the woods and not being careful or having a dirt problem in the fuel can or fuel source. Yup, with that much wrong with it, best to buy a new one. I'm sure you had to charge him a diagnostic fee but you did have to tear it down to find the issue. John from MI
do you share with your customers the video featuring their saw? This one is wild... did the cap come off in the woods somewhere and just threw it back in place?
I was looking all up and down these comments for the answer to do you get paid for that well executed diagnosis. I could see how the customer might stiff you for a good hour of your day. Please comment! Thanks for the video!
But you could fix that saw, for less than $50 and sell it as is no warranty for $150 or $200 bucks and the customer could come out ahead that you sold it to, and you could make some money, that is if the customer that currently owns the saw will donate it to you no charge.
All my chain saw is factory rebuilt now I do look for old saw that are still able to run, why the old ones are made with a different kind of metal they will last and have last longer than any new saw
That's normal to have that much dirt on 'air' side of the carb?!? I'm surprised the customer didn't go for the replacement crank seal and just have the saw as a backup...
They‘re an excellent value saw with great power to weight ratio. The fact that they‘re still available for sale is a testament to how good of a saw it is.
They are hard to pull over. They should've had a decompressor. If you're strong and don't mind pulling over a saw that's hard to pull, they seem to be a good saw. Mine has pretty good power, but it is hard to pull over. God bless you!
Stihl sells (2) different seals for the MS250, one style you do NOT disassemble the clamshell, just press in (9638 003 1581 vs 9639 003 1585). About $12 USD each versus the style that requires engine disassembly at $6 each.. Wonder if that would have made a more affordable repair. I did that once on an MS390. Cheap repair hours-wise.
In my opinion the seals that can be pressed the case without having to split the case is a waste of money and time. They are not as durable as the original seals that come from the factory. I see OEM seals that are 25 years old and still work. 😮
Your absolutely right. One of our head guys at Stihl here in Canada told us during a training session....no. If I don't feel good about the repair or have confidence in it, I just don't offer it. Plain and simple.
MS250's are discontinued in Australia and has been replaced with MS251 for AU$999.00 each. Or that is CA$920.16. You can buy two over there for the price of one here.
I wonder if your customers watch the video of their saw repair - and what they say about your findings as you perform the repair... How did all that crap get inside my fuel tank?!
To me that fuel looked like windscreen washer fluid. The colour and the way it behaved, and it kind of smell a bit like gasoline. That is also why the top of the piston was completely free of sooth. Dump the old fuel out and new fuel in, and you have a runner.
Good informative video! Where’s your shop located? I’ve been doing some land clearing work in the Halliburton and Barry’s Bay Area and it would be nice to know where a good shop is. I’m from Quebec so I’m not familiar with the area
