  • Dr. Phil guest says he can spot a bad tipper by how they look. Can we all learn that skill? Dr. Phil even puts him to the test.
Does this waiter truly have the ability to spot bad tippers? Recently, there's been a lot of buzz around this claim, so I decided to investigate by reacting to a video where a waiter confidently asserts their ability to discern who will leave a less-than-stellar tip. Join me as I watch the footage, share my thoughts, and maybe even uncover some surprising truths about tipping etiquette.

Great video. When dining in groups, I try to always be friendly and engaging with the wait staff and it usually ends up with them delivering the check to me. Now I see why!

Red Lobster was the only place I worked where customers would actually expect service to countuine after no tip. "Y'all got thoothpicks?" Me- "on your way out the door they are by the host stand.....out, on your way out"

That has always been my advice to ppl that don't tip. Don't go to the same place twice...

There was a family that came in regularly to Steak-n-Shake while I worked there.
I was the only one who figured out that the woman wanted ALL of my attention.
If her husband or son needed anything from me, she was the spokesperson.
It wasn't a problem for me to respect that family's dynamic.

Years ago I waited on a group of about 7 Canadian guys in their 20s and early 30s. It was a slow night so we had a great time. They even wanted photos with me to remember their trip. I did not get a dime that night from them. Sigh.
I later found out that in Canada they don't tip and probably didn't know they should tip in the US.
That was the only time I was stiffed.

I've not been a waitress in years.
I do have a question though.
Do you feel you should get tipped on the total bill?
So if 2 couples come in and order the same thing except the first ordered sodas or iced tea that you had to refill at least once if not twice.
The second couple ordered a bottle of wine which brought their bill up $50 more than the tea drinkers. You didn't have to pour after the first pour.
Would you expect to be tipped on the total bill or mainly meal and how many times you visited the table?
I see this situation coming up when tipping is talked about. It's about half and half that feel they should go by the meal and regular drinks and others by the total price.
It was noted that It's completely different if a couple keeps ordering cocktails making the waitstaff work more.

That is an interesting question. That is where some people get hung up on the value of service. There certainly should be a correlation between the service provided, and the gratitude expressed in the form of a tip when ordering a bottle of wine the guest should never have to open the bottle touch the bottle to refill it is a full service. As we staff, we not only sell items. We also sell an experience a feeling of being welcomed and taken care of that’s why people go out you can get food almost anywhere. That’s why people go to Disney it’s an experience and you pay for it, otherwise there are carnivals in every town. How did they select the wine they lean upon the expertise of the waiter or the sommelier?

@@themodernwaiterpodcast ok, I get you. I don't even drink wine. Lol.
I just noticed that on almost every video I see about tipping this situation is brought up somewhere in the comments.
I will add though that yes you can get food anywhere, but it's not prepared the same way. A burger at McDonalds is not the same as a burger at a restaurant. You can get a steak at Waffle House. You go to restaurants for better quality food and expert chefs. Sure the experience is nice, but the food is the most important.
The service could be awesome at a restaurant, but if the food is terrible no one is going.
I believe the original comment were at restaurants with 20 to 40 bottles of wine on the back of the main menu. It wouldn't be a place with a separate wine menu. Especially, not if the restaurant has a sommelier on staff to assist the customers in pairing their wine choice with their separate courses or dinner.
In my small city some of the restaurants allow you to bring your own unopened bottle of wine. The wine shop stays open longer on Fridays and Saturdays for that reason. Restaurants charge a corking fee.
Instead of garbage trucks coming to your home we bring our trash and recycling to the transfer station. I am amazed weekly when I see the glass recycling bin. 😂 The wine shop in town and our Ingles grocery store that has a very large section of wine and spirits to choose from are banking in the money! I never knew there were so many alcoholics and such casual drinkers living in my county… 🤣
Thank you for your response. ❤️

I I get what you’re saying. It depends. If they want good service, it doesn’t matter. They can get a female server and get horrible service. Did they get what they came to the restaurant for?

Nothing is ever 100%. But there are obviously signs that can certainly help you assign a degree of probability as to which way things may go. At the end of the day you just put your best effort out there. It all comes out in the wash if you are good at what you do.

@@themodernwaiterpodcast The US. The shaking begging bowl has gotten really bad here, although they do disguise it as a pay screen. And it doesn't matter if a service is provided or not. It is the job of the employer to pay his employees, not mine.

@@Banshee22068 I get it. It can be frustrating for sure. Talking tips is not one of my favorite subjects at all. It does have a dark history.
