  • In this video i show how to boot from m.2 slot on this particular motherboard.
    Should be easier. Msi was kinda weird back then.
    Notice: I was using Kioxia 1tb nvme cacheless ssd. I also have an asus z170-p with pentium on it, and there speeds were around 2000 mb/s. On this motherboard the speeds are dropped to +/- 800 mb/s. Atleast that's still well enough and better than sata ssd.

      Sure it should work just fine)
      The only downside will be the speeds. Because z97 boards used first gen m.2 slots, they were limited to 10 gigabits. Practically this means that the maximum speeds are slightly more than 800 mb/s. While using it i actually didn't encounter any problems whatsoever.

    • @runterhunter5031
      @runterhunter5031  Год назад

      Hi! To my understanding there cannot be any drivers to particularly windows 11 on this particular platform, because windows 11 doesn't technically support older generations and architectures like haswell. This results in lack of drivers.
      However, this reminds me when i tried using an ati radeon hd4890 in windows 10. Sometimes windows installed drivers automatically, sometimes it glitched or smth and it refused to do it even manually (I was testing older nvidia gpus on that system too).
      The point is, latest drivers for hd4890 were for windows 8.1, but they worked just fine on windows 10.
      Try to install drivers for windows 10 and see if it helps. I personally still use windows 10 because of personal preferences and ofc system stability. Glad if this helps!

    • @runterhunter5031

      In my case windows was already installed. But you should be able to boot from windows installer usb stick and install it without a problem. If that doesn't help and it doesnt boot from usb, try booting from usb with ahci. And when the system restarts, ssd should already contain a setup and you will be able to turn on raid with nvm support again.

      If you are sure that the drive doesn't require formatting (drive is used or you used it in another pc), try enabling some settings i showed in this video one by one, starting from windows 8 feature.

I'm going to be updating my Bios as it's still the 2014 version 1.8 and perhaps that could be the issue where M2 ssd is not recognized by the system. Neither anywhere on windows nor in the bios menu.

After that i turn on the pc, and i found out that my other HDD is not present 😢 ive tried enabling sata ports in bios, tried via computer management, and its not there still. Can you please help? I might suggest that the HDD died, but after i installed the SSD then it suddenly died? Please i need your input on this 🙏🙏🙏

    • @runterhunter5031
      @runterhunter5031  Год назад +2

      Hi! Sorry for my two-day late response. Luckily i don't think that your hdd is dead, i've never seen a hard disk just die. If it spins up but doesn't detect anywhere, it looks like a loose connection somewhere. First thing i'd check are loose sata connections. it is possible that while installing ssd you accidentally somehow moved the sata cable. One time i installed m.2 ssd and it seemed just fine and i installed it correctly. But somehow it didnt work properly and i had to replug the ssd and just then it decided to work :D Yeah so you might want to try that first.
      Also an important thing to note is that when installing m.2 ssd, some sata ports will be disabled (particularly sata5 and sata6 ports on z97 gaming 3 board), so you should definitely try a different sata port.
      I generally believe that you just have the hdd plugged in the now disabled sata port, so that should be an easy fix. I hope this helps :)

      Hi! I am very sorry for my slow reply. No, you basically cannot upgrade the m.2 slot on your motherboard. You can upgrade the ssd itself ofcourse, but it will work within this specific m.2 slot standard (z97 has 1st gen m.2 slot, which means 10gigabit max bandwidth, 850 mb/s max speed.) If you use a m.2 extension card, it will almost certainly work but not in 4.0, 3.0 at best. But i cannot help you with setting that up, since i don't have any experience with them.

So when nand configuration was turned off (stock bios settings), the nvme drive was detected and visible in windows installation. Theoretically m.2 should be detected in windows regardless of these settings.
      This might help you: Try reseating the m.2 drive. I recently upgraded to a new pc and the motherboard didnt detect m.2 anywhere at all, althrough it was seem to be installed properly. I reseated it and made sure the screw hole was aligned well, and it worked just fine after that. I hope such a easy fix will help you! If it doesn't, you should check the m.2 drive on another motherboard.

      Hi! Settings shown in video are for booting from m.2. With default bios settings it was still recognised in windows installation.
      One time i was building a pc, and the m.2 didnt show up at all anywhere, even tho i was sure the ssd was working. So i just reseated it and it worked just fine after that! Even though it looked like it was connected properly, maybe the contact wasnt that good somewhere. Hope this easy fix will qork for you too!

    Without mod bios, just do through intel raid storage optional??

    • @runterhunter5031
      @runterhunter5031  Год назад

      Everything you see in this video is required for m.2 ssd to work properly. Especially if you want to use it as primary storage like i do. No more no less. Even if you leave achi+uefi on instead of just uefi, it will automatically change to just uefi when enabling pci nand configuration. I didn't quite get what you meant but in this video i show how to make m.2 ssd usable on these motherboards.

      @@bdgsmule1020 Unfortunately i don't have any experience with those adapters. So it's hard for me to say if it's gonna work properly or be bootable. I guess that it might work as intended as storage but not more than that. If there is a bios mod specifically for pci to m.2 adapter, i guess you will have to install that bios mod.

      Hi! I'm sorry for not responding, i didn't get any notifications... I shall recommend a pcie gen 3 drive from kingston, kioxia, or samsung. 1tb should cost about 60 bucks. I personally have the cheapest (cacheless, can tell from having just the memory on board and no smaller chips) 1tb kioxia gen 3, that i salvaged from a dead hp laptop. The only downside with this and probably all Z97 motherboards is that the m.2 is first gen, which is practically speaking just a speed limit down to about 830 mb/s. When i install my drive into a z170 motherboard, that already has third gen pcie m.2, the speeds for my drive max out at about 2100mb/s (Speed limit for third gen m.2 is 3500mb/s). I don't recommend getting gen4 drives for Z97. Now about drive reliability and longevity. There are 4 main ssd technologies that are out there, and 3 of which are the most common ones. QLC, TLC, MLC (and SLC but you can't really find it that easily nowadays). QLC is the cheapest and will not live an eternity of 8+ years like the other ones. TLC is the sweet spot for budget which offers good reliability. And MLC is the long lasting thingy that's marketed for workstations and workload that costs sometimes twice than TLC. Samsung made this easy in their lineups: Samsung QVO(QLC), EVO(TLC), PRO (MLC). I hope this helps!
