Thank you! I use all these methods...I did not realize that what I'd been doing had a name! I am a writer, but am very grateful when exhausted for the audio feature on my computer and phone. 🥰
That's wonderful! I am also a person who uses a varied approach. Except for the card system. I haven't tried that one yet but can definitely see how useful it could be.
I use a binder which allows dividers and different papers etc. It does grow quite large so then i bind a grouping together . Great video , commonplace is so important for memory and memories . 😊
A binder is so perfect for a commonplace book. I agree, commonplace keeping is so important and fun. I love looking back through the book and being re-inspired. Thanks so much for watching and for sharing 💖
Now that I read your comment, I recognize right away that using a binder is such an obvious and elegant solution. But it had never occurred to me before. Thank you for sharing! 🤗
I think a combination of index cards, combined with a notebook would work well. One could organize the thoughts in some fashion, then transfer it to the book in an easier to find way, instead of writing random thoughts directly into the journal
This was how I was taught to write college papers in the 70's when electric typewriters were the height of technology. When we researched a topic (physically in the library with the aid of the card catalog) we wrote one idea or thought from a source on an index card. After this research was completed, we arranged the cards in a way that made most sense re: the paper. OH! Also on the index card we noted the author of the book, article, page, thesis, whatever the source was, the date published, publisher, page number, etc. so we had that ready for footnotes and bibliography. The first time I did this there were index cards spread all over my dorm room!!! Eventually I got better at it. 😊 Great idea for a commonplace book.
I am so happy you found the set up useful 🙂 I love having a commonplace book and love that the video inspired you 💖 Thanks so much for watching and for your comment.
Can you/anyone further clarify the difference between the Index and the Table of Contents? Not clear on how they’re different in practical use. Very helpful video!
Hi! For my Commonplace Book, the table of contents lists the pages that a specific book I am writing pages from is on. The Index at the back of the commonplace book lists themes that can be found on any pages throughout the entire commonplace book. For example, I am writing favourite passages from Nick Cave's newest book into my commonplace book. Once I am done copying my favourite passages, I will list in the Table of Contents 'Faith, Hope, and Carnage' by Nick Cave pgs. 100-105. In the Index, I might list themes such as faith, love, grief and add any pages from the entire Commonplace book that feature passages that reflect on those themes. Hope that helps 🙂
Cooper is adorable. Thanks for the ideas for commonplace books.
I have to agree, she is is 😊 I am so happy you found the ideas useful. Thanks so much for watching and for your kind words 💖

Great Video Kim !
by the way - if you are into digital Commonplace Book the software "obsidian" may be your thing :)
I am working on a fusion of Bullet Journal and Zettelkasten-Method in a A5 Binder. We will see how / if it works :3
I love the A5 binder size. It's perfect for a combination style! Thanks so much for sharing and for watching 💖
