Thank you Linda for adressing this issue and the many different reasons for why even young and gender aware couples end up in these traditional roles and the strategy on how to change that. After having three kids, my skills were down at the bottom, and I almost lost interest in boating in general. Now, struggeling to catch up, I finally feel comfortable to go out in our boat with my friends on my own, and that freedom really makes the whole difference. Boat life and sailing went from boooring…. to super exciting.
So good to hear that you worked your way back. I have seen this so many times, young women that, to their own surprise, realize they have lost skills, without noticing it! So we must talk about this. Thank you!
I saw your video on Breaking Waves News. I knew right away I had to subscribe to you. You're such an inspiration and breath of fresh air on RUclips. Your independence, knowledge, initiative to sail around the world is so admirable. I hope to become half the skipper you are someday and I will continue to watch you videos and hopefully gain some of the knowledge you have to share.
I was so sure I had answered you! Im sorry. Annette, you can be the skipper you want to be. Every hour of sailing will give you more routine, and more feeling of what kind of skipper you are. Just keep on sailing!
Thank you ! Very wise! The bonding of a crew or a couple is formed through the struggle not the success. I can think of nothing more endearing or sexy than a couple battling heavy seas together . Sharing the trust they build through moments of fear and triumph .
Thank you, this is spot on! It really helps to be two beginners, but even then you risk letting the man do all the "complicated" work. Setting a goal to be able to sail on your own truly makes you keep up 👍🏻
Absolutely! To be able to work as a team is somehow related to dancing. 💃🏽🕺🏽 Like in tango - when both partners have experienced how to lead and how to follow, the dance becomes like a flow. With more redundance for creativity and actual dance than just moving around restricted to figures or patterns. To have shared knowledge and experience is more fun in easy manoeuvres, and invaluable when heavy weathers hit. Not to mention if someone is injured or ill, the advantage of knowing how to handle your boat is a mandatory.
@@maxwellsmart2720 Nowadays Argentinian tango is only teamwork. I have my 20 years of tango experience but only newcomers or beginners still believe in an attitude like that. Knowing from tango history when men dancing with men was the quickest way to be able to understand both roles.
@@LindaLindenauSailing what about legal responsabilities ? what if the name in the role paper is diferent than the name whom take the decisions ? who must take care of lives ? an equalitary woman or a legal name on the paper ? in your boat my irresponsabilitie its on your shoulders . have you a notion of responsability or you are just a powerful woman in sunny days ? think about it
I would argue that being able to change the fuel filter/s is more important than the oil filter, as fuel problems is a dominant cause of engine stoppages.
Good video. Very important to make everyone a part of the crew. I think we have done most of what you say except from taking turns. We started with the easier and accelerated. You need to take every situation to get realy comfortable. A reflection on the side.I do some courses and always try to use the right vocabulary. A lot of problems stem from misunderstandings. I like to make it simple but it has to be right. You talk about parking the boat. I can park a boat in the open sea by heaving to. I can park in a dock with finger pontoons but that does not include tying up. To dock, in swedish lägga till, is not the same as parking.
Thank you! Im glad to hear people work on this. To go step by step is wise! Im just curious, how do you decide who is to do the docking? Interesting remark about the word parking. I have heard it being used the same way as docking, I didnt know there was a difference! Anyway, what I talk about here, is the actual maneuvering of the boat, not tying up, so I might be forgiven.
@@LindaLindenauSailing We started with the wife doing the simple ones where she felt confident. Quite often she started but got spooked and left it to me. After one season of this we decided it would be really difficult if she was not to handle it. After one season of doing 90% now she does almost all dockings. I might do 2% now. That is mostly for me to get the training. Feel I should mention we sail an old catamaran with one engine. Outboard. It is a difficult boat to manuever. Prior monohulls has been a breeze to handle.

@@LindaLindenauSailing No she is not a member. She shoots the breeze with me and the other men i the club. We are also experiencing more women taking active part in the sailing. She doesn’t beleive in women being lesser than men so that they need special care. A lot of the ladies are indeed less trained in sailing than their male companions but that can be fixed without all the negativity that most gender specified constellations bring out. I know she was a member of She Captain but got fed up with the male hostility. I doesn’t need to be hostile and condescending towards one group just beacuse you want to help another. Yes, definitely. I thought I said "filter and impeller", meaning filter in general. Or did I say oil filter somewhere?
