  • It's a documentary using some footage of that film and mainly of another rare recording of the stage show that took place at Jorasanko.

    No this is not the original Natir Puja as it was filmed by Rabindranath. It is said that all the prints were burnt to ashes. Here some other footage from the Jorasanko play Natir Puja, also directed by Tagore himself was used and towards the end a little clip is there from the film.

    Pinakin Trivedi from Gujarat was a member of the Gaaner Dal, the inner group of choicest singers chosen by Gurudev. He maintained a regular daily duary and has left contemporaneous record. According to the entry in his diary ' Manasi ' dated 5th January 1932, the filming of the Talkie as it was then called was done in Jan. 1932 in Calcutta. In a big hall, the stage was designed by Surenbabu. Six electric bulbs each of 15000 c.p. were switched on. Among others, Maya and Tatu also acted in it.

    Can anyone recognize famous Chunibala Devi of "Pother Panchali" here in this drama? This was her second performance before being rediscovered by Satyajit Ray.

      She was 52 years old when the drama was staged in 1927, and 57 when the film was done. I don't believe that part of the footage was included in this documentary. No, I can't see her at least.

    The narrator says that the first version was staged in Jorasanka in 1927, on Tagore's 70th birthday. That is obviously incorrect as Tagore was born in 1861. Tagore's 70th birthday was in 1931.

      The film directed by Rabindranath was released on March 22, 1932, to celebrate the Poet's 70th birthday. In 1927 the drama was staged for the first time.

    does anyone know if the film had sound?

    • @cParthapratim
      @cParthapratim  8 лет назад +1

      The original film never went through a post-production where sound track could be added. The raw footage had some sound though. This film used some of the raw sound, and the rest is obviously reconstructed.
