Most officers don't really know that there are a lot of people who enjoy just going into and seeing these places, so when they see a car parked out front of an abandoned building they have no idea what could be going on inside, hence the over-cautious response. Excellent video though, at least you know next time not to park in such an obvious spot :)
The Proper People Actually, I picked the perfect spot to park. It gave me the climactic ending I wanted. I’m just glad they didn’t turn up 30 minutes earlier.
This is Dan Bell. True, but still 99% of the time its a situation you want to avoid. Urban explorers getting arrested or given a court appearance date for trespassing is not that uncommon, I know an explorer who has done jail time for checking out a more mundane location than this.
The Proper People It’s definitely not something I’d do again. It was more of a safety decision as this area of Akron is pretty sketchy and I was alone carrying a ton of expensive gear. Dan you might consider adding a new team member who drives you to locations and then just drives around and "Loiters" in the general area ready to pick you up when you call. This way you can avoid detection, avoid someone messing with your parked car, and have some backup you can call...

Thanks for posting this. I worked at Rolling Acres mall in the 80s, at Jean Nicole and later at Merry-Go-Round. Was a thriving place at one time. Eventually, they had to move in the mall's own Akron Police satellite station to deal with the crime and such. Your video brought back so many memories, like when my son wouldn't listen and ended up falling into that fountain! Ha! Thank you so much.
+catgivens I can only imagine what it would be like to work in a place that was once thriving and is now abandoned! Really interesting to see someone else's experience and ties to an abandoned place :)
Somehow one guy goes to explore a vacant mall and the entire Akron Police force come after him, but tons of people have gotten away with all that vandalizing without being caught!
Per another video on this place by .. Sun Belt Films or something along those lines, the security at the mall is a recent thing. When the mall first went under it was entirely unprotected.
*So the lesson to learn from this video is if your going to visit any abandoned property make sure not to park on the property because either security or police check the parking lot to see if anyone is parked there which means your probably inside the abandoned building.*
Dan stated earlier that he chose the perfect place to park because in case something were to go wrong, his car would be close so he’d have a quick escape.
I grew up going to this mall, and was able to identify virtually every shop you went in. The saddest thing I saw was the fountain. I loved that fountain. It made the most amazing sound and the sunlight would glint of the mirrored pipes and all the pennies people threw into even though it wasn't a wishing well. Here's a little story. The store at around the 13:00 mark, Excalibur, dealt in knickknacks and replica medieval weapons, none of which ever seemed to sell. I found out how they managed to stay in business one day when I was about 12. A teenage guy almost bit my head off because I was to close to the counter and could see that the shop was sell him drugs from underneath the counter.
Ill never look at business that looks like it never has business (but manages to stay open anyway) ever again. Maybe I should take a peek behind a counter one of these days.

If it works out even remotely close to how their purchase of the Euclid Square mall has worked out, be prepared to have a lot of delayed/lost packages for a few months once it opens....
Amazon seems to always choose dead malls to build their distribution centers on, but hardly ever other large, abandoned spaces (factories etc). It's like they want to show the world that they are replacing malls as the dominant force in retail.
@@hannaharmstrong9139 There are two other dead malls that were torn down and the Amazon vultures preyed upon it. I worked for Amazon. Not a good experience, you can tell by my tone.
I think the most depressing part of these videos is that, we can go back and look, but we see that like our child hood, the locations that we used to frequent and our memories of them are gone. Nothing more than a thought reserved to what once was, and now we are left with a visage of desolation.
I came of age on an Air Force base. The entire housing area was demolished in the early 2000s, to the soil, and rebuilt. Not just the house I came of age in, but the entire 200+ area housing area. The nearby retail areas, and an entire town, had died over the ensuing years, including all three business that housed my first three jobs. I visited three a few years ago, and it stung to have hardly anything, not even trees, to reminisce about. Just gone. Oh well. An American citizen, not US subject.
Bil Paranormal Investigator it’s rather sad because my childhood and early adult years are so full of memories from this place. Chapel hill seems to be headed in this direction.
"very friendly police...the most friendly police...so friendly" *each cop looks back and stares* lmao its like a pack of pitbulls that just rushed you only to sniff your pants..."nice doggies, friendly doggies...don't hurt me please"
Note to self. Don't park on the property you're exploring. You hit a wrong key or miss key Stroke, and everybody and their stupid grandma wants to play speak and spell with you! Sheesh!
love the cops enthusiastic, "ah there we go" as soon as you popped into his train of sight lmaoo. but dang they really rounded up those officers. not surprised tho, I'm sure there have been plenty of arrests there from people that were doing things like ya know, stealing the railings and putting bullets through glass windows lol
Wow. My grandmother used to bring me there in the mid 70's when it was the 'new' mall then. Some nice memory's of that place. Sad to see how it died. And now I feel old lol. Thanks for the video Dan Bell!
The frogs are an awesome touch. I can just imagine in the future, when this mall is ruined far beyond its state in this video--coyotes and foxes, other things wandering through the burned out landscapes of the past. Life goes on without us. Truly amazing.
@Speed Zero - A few months ago, I actually had started to create a fan-made series that takes place in Rolling Acres. It's as if it was abandoned for 10-15+ years and never demolished, it would have been exposed to the elements for much longer, and would have been in worse shape than in this video.. In the series, cats and other animals like foxes, dogs, coyotes, and maybe even wolves have overtaken the mall. I will just be making the series for fun. I'm a dead mall fan, so I just decided to make it.
The last shot is beautiful. It's like a memory. So grand at first and it just fades away into something small, decrepit, insignificant. Keep up the good work.
Yeah it gave me nostalgia and sadness(melancholy) though ive never experienced the place or know about the place.. also the photos he showed of how many people were there once it looks so happy(the place)
Me: "My car got broken into." Cops: [most dismissive tone this side of the DMV] "Go to our website and fill out a report." You: explore derelict mall Cops: "ALL AVAILABLE UNITS!" I like how they boxed your car in like you were an underworld kingpin.
Akron was originally the center of American rubber manufacturing for stuff like automobile tires and other products. By the end of the 1990's it was in serious decline and by the end of the 00's the industrial worker base had declined by half. Like many midwestern rust belt cities, the main industry that used to fuel it's prosperity started to come crashing down and...so did the city. This story has been repeated a whole bunch of times across this country.
My very first job when I came home from the Army was as a security officer at Rolling Acres. It was kind of embarrassing to put on a "rent-a-cop" uniform, especially since we had always jokingly referred to the mall security as "Mounties", since the hat made them look like Canadian Mounted Police more so than making you look like a State Trooper or Drill Sargent. I really appreciate this video my friend!!! I had completely forgotten some of the memories and feelings. Your footage is PERFECT!!
Its so interesting to see how nature always prevails against man made things. Like no matter how expensive or nice a building in as soon as it becomes desolate nature will always swoop in and reclaim it
I actually knew Brogan Rafferty. He was a high school classmate of mine. He gave off that cool, suave vibe that so cleverly disguised what he was actually involved with. When he was arrested, it was an absolute _shock_ for both the teachers and student body. When the local stations came, my aunt had to escort my sister and I away from the hounding news crews.
Kinda sad really. A place built to hold so much life, a community social center. Now it's just so silent, empty, dark. No voices, no music playing, no smells of food from the restaurants.

I’m a very firm believer of “take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footsteps” mindset, but at the same time I would think that’d be a great way to get repressed anger out.
Look at those huge pieces of granite on the floor, if people only knew not only how expensive that stuff was to purchase, but the labor to have it installed was extremely expensive also. I worked on the Arden fair mall in Sacramento in like 1990 or 91 I can't remember right now, but it was 200,000 sq. ft. of granite and 50,000 sq. ft. of mosaic tile in the food court. I'm telly you there was ungodly amounts of money put into these places. I used to go hang out at the mall in my teens and even in my 20s and 30s. I remember when the brick cellphones came out. I had one and I thought I was so cool with that huge thing hanging from my belt loop. Oh my gosh, I never thought I'd see theses places just looking like scenes from the walking dead. It's a trip, so scary.
frank mathis I am a granite salesman, fabricator and installer. The expensive, or rather most expensive part of getting granite is fabrication, the logistics are also a nightmare because of the weight. The most unfortunate part of granite or marble installed and left is it actually costs more to remove and reinstall it in almost all cases than it costs to buy new stone and have it installed. Unless it truly is a very rare type or has historical value. I only have torn out stone to be reused a handful of times, only two of those times was it really because of the value of the stone. In was Pink Marble from the state capital bathroom (yes someone wanted the stone peed on by two presidents) and the other a rare Italian marble from a staircase of a mansion near Nashville, TN.
the last clip of you driving away from the mall paired with that music made this video immediately 1000000000 times better and also a little sad great job
The only modern buildings that will remain standing by that time will likely just be military forts and the like. Places built from concrete and steel built to last. (like the modern day equivalent of a castle) Buildings like these are already breaking down without maintainance, and in a few decades to a century at most would just be a pile of rubble, twisted metal and bricks with bits of plastic and glass mixed in.
The foundations and small bits of the building materials will be found in the ground. Every once in a while you'll get incredibly lucky and a wall section will be preserved almost intact. That's how we identify ancient towns and buildings since most of them weren't made with materials that stand the test of time for hundreds and thousands of years (lots of mudbrick, wood, and grasses which biodegrade when not kept up).
This is even more true now that COVID shut down everything and malls are unlikely to be sustainable long term so we will all just gradually switch over to cyber shopping.
All that aside, great video. I loved every minute. There's something so surreal about places that used to be open for business but are now just standing there, wasting away. It blows my mind.
I feel like they probably use the mall for training purposes, hence the number of officers. I still love that he just comes around the corner and says "Oh, there we go!" so calmly.
MusicianAdam The reason why so many officers showed up is because it's building with many rooms. One single cop can be so easily ambushed that it's terrifying the thought of going in there alone. So depending on the size of the building, it's layout and how many rooms it has, they send additional officers for backup. Now of course from our point of view ot was excessive because we are seeing it from the RUclipsr's point of view. But for the cops? They don't know if the person that just broke in armed or not, or how many of them are there.
The saddest part is the very end, watching Rolling Acres fade away getting smaller and smaller...all the while realizing that none of it is there anymore, the bustling crowd of people that once frequented the great mall, the gorgeous fountain that almost survived the demolition but didn't make it...the anchor stores that hung on like champs until the very end, the parking lot filled with cars that brought you to a place where you could see, feel and touch things and people that were part of a better America. I wish time travel were possible.
That would have been awesome if the fountain survived! I don't understand why it couldn't be perserved...??!!! It could have been turned into an outdoor fountain.... I guess people around there don't appreciate beauty when they see it. They tare up and destroy everything! THOSE BASTARDS!💗😡😠😡😠😡😠
Everyone over 30 in the 1980s probably said the same thing about downtown shopping areas. Where people used to shop and eat and congregate and own small businesses until everyone left for the new suburban mall. With the same stores as every other mall in America. The good old days of....Claire's?
I believe that's all coming back. The enclosed malls that put town center stores are now dying out and those centers of towns are starting to thrive. That and outdoor shopping outlets
So a small police force descended to the mall because of the lone intruder! LOL that's awesome - I could hear your voice shaking. I'm glad it all went okay for you.
Rei Ev they didn't know it was a 'lone intruder'. For all they know it could've been a bunch of teenagers trying to break shit or whatever or criminal activities like drugs or even murder. Hey in that part of town, you never know.
They probably sent a large number of officers because a mall is a big place to search for only one or two. And obviously they take things seriously since there have been incidents at this particular mall before. The news reports you heard are only two incidents; I'll bet there are a lot more, less 'newsworthy' incidents on record.
They also patrol it all of the time because they have to. They didn't want it to turn in to a Detroit-like body-dumping site and clearly, it was heading in that direction. And it was already known to be frequented by druggies and/or thugs and/or homeless people. Lot of guns fired in there, as you saw... It's a mostly vacant stretch of giant, abandoned box stores that all went out of business at once. There is a whole mile of these buildings, at least, bordering a bad part of Akron. It seems like it's getting a bit better, but slowly. I thought I'd be sad to see the mall go, but not anymore. That domino has to fall before my old hometown can really begin to recover, I think. Better vacant land than decaying dereliction.
Maddie S657 dude this mall was awesome until the mid to late 90s. Always packed with people. Lots of fun kid times there. But things changed really fast...
The police seemed cool. I bet they wouldn't have made you leave if that wasn't what they were instructed to do. I generally do not care for cops but they seemed nice.
They were probably nice to him because normally I bet they find all the guys with guns and all the homeless people on drugs. This man just wanted to make a cool video.
@@april_ Not sure how they do it in the U.S. but can they see past criminal history from a licence plate? The fact they blocked his car in means maybe they did a check and saw he had no history, maybe thats why they were cool with him and just let him go with what seems not even a warning, I dont know.
I suppose those frogs are fake too? Those plants are alive. I'm talking about the ones growing under the open skylights. If you contrast with the winter photos you can see the plants are brown because they are in their dormant stage. It appears to be summer here so they are green again.
Rolling Acres? Shit, I used to drive past that place all the time and didn't notice the mall was demolished. Also the nearby Long John Silvers has all-you-can-eat on Sundays if you're ever hungry and drunk.
I get mix emotions watching this. I use to beg my mother to go to rolling acres mall all the time. But we always ended up at chapel hill mall. I went a few times to this mall though.
Where do I begin in response to this video? I have so many memories with my grandparents going in there. Where you got in was between the Target and Picnic Place (food court) and that used to be a fairly large furniture store. Went in there a few times but mostly remember thinking how 80's it looked with all of the glass and lights will never forget walking past it when coming in from Target to go to Eli's Char Grille to get a couple fried cheese on a stick and corn dogs. There also used to be a Wendy's and Subway in there but we always went to Eli's there was something about that cheese on a stick, and the lady that worked the counter was so nice to us. In the food Court between Eli's and the restrooms there used to be a small platform with a piano on it and occasionally a guy would be there playing music. On the far side directly across from the restrooms was a copper popper where we would get cheese and caramel popcorn mix and chocolate covered pretzel sticks. Next to Eli's before the stairs and small ramp (towards Dillards) was a shop that sold magazines and stuff and my grandpa always used to give me enough money to get a roll or two of Necco wafers. At the end of that hallways towards Dillards were the scariest stairs of my life, not sure why but I was always scared of falling in between them when I was young. That elevator was the coolest thing in the world there when you were a kid because you could look out and just see everyone going about their day, stopping and talking with friends they would run into, and going to grab a bite to eat. The small triangular hole in the floor me and my siblings used to look over it and wondered why they bothered putting it there at all. We also loved the small fountain by the escalators. Used to go school clothes shopping in elementary and early middle school (before it started getting too bad and we switched to Chapel Hill mall) at the JCPenny outlet store. That store just always felt like it was stuck in the 70's but we were all sad when it closed a few years ago could hardly believe it when it did. The big main fountain was so beautiful we used to sit on the edge, and when really little dangle our feet in the water, snacking on candy or popcorn we got at Target. During the Christmas season they would turn the fountain off and put a little stage up where santa would be and it was all decorated in fake snow, it was the thing all the kids from Kenmore and surrounding areas looked forward to. Near there across from the Jewlery store (one of like 2 and at one time 3) was a Hallmark store and before that it sold teddy bears where my dad bought me a stuffed polar bear before I was born and still have. Can not remember what it was called though. Further down that path was a cheap dollar store, I believe a music store and a pet store where we would go and play with the puppies. I'm really drawing a blank right now on the rest of the mall but that might be because it is getting late and haven't been there in over 10 years. If anyone has any questions about certain parts of the video what was there and such I'd be happy to answer them as best as I can. I spent a good 15 years going there as a child.
Kathryn Radonich Thank you for sharing your memories! It's interesting both because of what we could see on the video, but also because I've never visited America in my life. So it's cool seeing things through your eyes!
I finally went there yesterday August 15, 2017. Most of the interior space has been demolished now, but I was able to walk into the lobby of the old theater and walk up the escalator with the thin wire chandelier that you can see in this video. It is still possible to drive the exterior of this mall as most of the façade is still up, and get a good idea of what Dan approached 2 years ago. I stood just down from the JC Penny for instance, right in front of the Rolling Acres sign where he spoke to the couple at the beginning of the video, and it's very creepy to see the smashed in windows and graffiti, and the general complete disrepair with the parking lot. You really feel like this is something out of a zombie apocalypse film. Last note, it was difficult to locate the place where Dan entered the mall as the area has now been torn down, but it was through a section just past the entrance to the movie theater on the back side of the mall. You can still see the angle of the road and work out where the building was, which is now just open space.
17:45 That was creepy graffiti on the wall. Imagine being chased by someone in here at night time. You run into that room to hide and you shine your flashlight on the wall and you see that message... That would be so scary. 😨

He could have escaped initial detection, and playing hide-and-go seek with a band of armed officers might not be a good idea, but it could be fun (until he got caught or shot.)
The broken glass all over the floor, crunch crunch crunch eliminates the possibility of stealth escape, unless he takes his shoes off and walks in socks.

Somehow one guy goes to explore a vacant mall and the entire Akron Police force come after him, but tons of people have gotten away with all that vandalizing without being caught!
Wanda Michell C good point.
Per another video on this place by .. Sun Belt Films or something along those lines, the security at the mall is a recent thing. When the mall first went under it was entirely unprotected.
Neighborbob Ah! Makes sense. Probably after that one guy died.
Because they don't have a car.
True, but those anchor stores have businesses in them as well, with cameras facing into the now gone mall.

LOL
This is the ultimate distribution of mall memories, right here. It's like prose.
Ill never look at business that looks like it never has business (but manages to stay open anyway) ever again.

The mall property was bought by Amazon in February 2019. It will be demolished and a distribution center will be built on the land.

Wow, Akron must be a pretty quiet city...looks like they sent their entire police force! :P
+Joe Capelli wow so that must've been the reason for its slow decline? I'm in NY and just started watching these "rolling acres" videos.
Akron isn't as small as it seems I've lived in Akron since I was born :3

U dint telly me nofin.
what material were the floors before you worked in arden?
frank mathis I am a granite salesman, fabricator and installer. In was Pink Marble from the state capital bathroom (yes someone wanted the stone peed on by two presidents) and the other a rare Italian marble from a staircase of a mansion near Nashville, TN.
frank mathis back then the prices truly were ridiculous, prices have dropped @80% since then.
What mansion? Only ones I know of are Belmont and Fontanel.

Psivewri could you imagine paintballing in there
Silent Hill 3, the very first level is a hellish mall twisted by supernatural influence
2000 years from now history books will say, "Society built megalithic structures known as 'shopping malls'..."
2000 years from now, modern buildings like this will be just a mound of sand.
We have always built “malls” they are called bazaars
The foundations and small bits of the building materials will be found in the ground. Every once in a while you'll get incredibly lucky and a wall section will be preserved almost intact. That's how we identify ancient towns and buildings since most of them weren't made with materials that stand the test of time for hundreds and thousands of years (lots of mudbrick, wood, and grasses which biodegrade when not kept up).
This is even more true now that COVID shut down everything and malls are unlikely to be sustainable long term so we will all just gradually switch over to cyber shopping.
Omg that cop was all, OH, THERE WE GO! Made me feel like I was watching a video game play through. XD I felt the urge to run. XD

Someone should make an Urbex VideoGame. HD Graphics, Dolby 7.1 Sound.
No cheap shit. A proper game. Find your way in, explore and leave.
@excentrix Heck yes. And make it open source and people can upload their local mall.
They don't know if the person that just broke in armed or not, or how many of them are there.
xD I know right!!! So calming!! I would've shot the bitch xD.
Maintance is expensive probably
Everyone over 30 in the 1980s probably said the same thing about downtown shopping areas. Where people used to shop and eat and congregate and own small businesses until everyone left for the new suburban mall. With the same stores as every other mall in America. The good old days of....Claire's?
I do hope so too.. thats why i love 'back to the future'
I believe that's all coming back. The enclosed malls that put town center stores are now dying out and those centers of towns are starting to thrive. That and outdoor shopping outlets
I love the cop's nonchalant "oh there you are!" He sounded like he'd just found his kid who'd wandered off.
Gees, wish I could get that kind of response when I call the police about something serious!
From the looks of it, the 'friendly' people he spoke to at the start of the video immediately called the police.

But then it's just Will Smith all alone

The police seemed cool. I bet they wouldn't have made you leave if that wasn't what they were instructed to do. I generally do not care for cops but they seemed nice.
What do you got against cops
They were probably nice to him because normally I bet they find all the guys with guns and all the homeless people on drugs. This man just wanted to make a cool video.
Cool seeing you here. Love your vids too.
@@april_ Not sure how they do it in the U.S. but can they see past criminal history from a licence plate? The fact they blocked his car in means maybe they did a check and saw he had no history, maybe thats why they were cool with him and just let him go with what seems not even a warning, I dont know.
Love JetFuel they run the plate and it shows who it’s registered to then they can check that persons record
I like how the plants are still living. Just like a little reminder that nature is always waiting to take over after we are gone.
+Beth G. : Plants are artificial. The only thing living and growing is the mold.

It's not abandoned...that's just how everything in Ohio looks.

why I'm from Canada ..and I been there in the 90s
can confirm, i live in ohio. about 20 minutes from this mall
Oh no! My feelings! D:
well walking up that escalator certainly is a fun little game of Try Not To Die isn’t it?
17:46 dan, I'm surprised you didn't cut yourself on all that edge.
FannyMMOs it was a really cool place to go to. I can see the Shell of the building from my back yard.
What years did you hangout there? I'm guessing mid 90s based on what you said?
I believe the gift store you are referring to (where your dad purchased the teddy) was Carlton Cards. But don’t quote me on it.
@@kathrynradonich3982 What scary stairs were you talking about? We're they shown in the video? Or are you talking about the escalator?
Dude this is so calming I fell asleep to this and woke up like 3 hours later
I'd be concerned about your respiratory health lol
gas masks are an explorers best friend
Aaronasmr 883 a trip to Home Depot and $30 later take care of that.
Forget that, what about carrying a piece for protection?
buttfacemonkey ok edgelord, you try using your hands against armed assailants.
Yeah, there's only 100,000 asbestos ceiling tiles, with at least half of them on the floor.
This is the best video of your Dead Mall Series. I had an uneasy feeling the entire time watching this one. Well done!
You can still see the angle of the road and work out where the building was, which is now just open space.
reminds me of the last of us
I'VE McFALLEN reminds me of the scavenger scene in The Force Awakens
I'VE McFALLEN omg, same
I'VE McFALLEN I just came here to comment that
I thought it looked very much like the scene at the mall in dlc Left Behind.
Yeah, same. I have a feeling this was one of the malls that Naughty Dog based the Left Behind present day mall on.
dude i nearly pooped at "oh there we go!"
well, the officer did well going for his flashlight first, and not his weapon... Very Nice & Friendly in Ohio, not everyplace is as safe.
17:45 That was creepy graffiti on the wall. Imagine being chased by someone in here at night time. You run into that room to hide and you shine your flashlight on the wall and you see that message... That would be so scary. 😨
And then the person is behind you 😳
Would they have really let the dog walk on that broken glass like that?
They have shoes to put on them. Seriously.
Its also safety glass which shatters into blunt pieces rather than sharp pieces
Dogs are tough, they have thick pads on their feet. Unless it's some serious jagged glass they'll be fine
You get a real "Life After People" vibe from this.
Must have been a slow day for those cops. But I suppose they know the history of the mall, so they might have suspected a shootout.
