My grandparents moved to California in 1955. My wife’s family in 1930’s. They describe it as “heaven”. I remember it in the 60’s. It was just amazing. We left in 94, but family is still there. It’s a mess now. I remember driving from LA to Palm Springs. It was so picturesque. Small cities, agriculture, vineyards, orange groves, and it was safe overall.
My parents moved to Los Angeles in 1954 and I was born there in 1965...born and raised in West Hollywood. I loved it then. I married in 1995 and moved the the pnw. Go back to Los Angeles every few years but it’s not the same as when I was a kid in the 70’s, 80’s.
Since nobody had photoshop in those days, I feel that it's safe to assume that this is what things actually looked like. Too bad that probably won't happen again.
When I was young, on hot summer nights my mother would ask me if I wanted to go for a drive. That was a code phrase for "Start by buying a dozen won-ton butterflies from Phoenix Bakery in Chinatown and then drive out to Portuguese Bend to see the Wayfarers Chapel and maybe through the neighborhoods of Pacific Palisades." My mother loved he Wayfarers Chapel. California is still wonderful: It is all about community.
I lived in Chicago and everybody wanted to go to L.A. I asked the bus driver if we were in L.A. yet. He said yeah. And that's how I ended up in Phoenix. I'm still looking for that driver.😆
Nope. Most places that were, won’t be again. Population is too high, homes are too expensive. Like Don Henley said in that Eagles song, “Call someplace paradise, kiss it goodbye.” Having said that, I’d still rather live here than almost anywhere else. North of the Golden Gate Bridge there is still beauty and tranquility. Redwoods, wine and cheese, amazing restaurants, small towns, and a wild rocky coast…
Love this look back in time. I lived in Monterey back in the 90’s and it was a beautiful place to be. Friends of mine that have been back recently said it’s turning in to a mini San Francisco. Homeless people everywhere defecating and urinating all over the place. It breaks my heart. Pacific Grove and Monterey were such wonderful places to visit and even live if you could afford to. Not so much now I guess.

Know what you’re talking about before you post. LA has always been liberal. It’s big developers and city planners (aka conservatives) that mucked up everything.
If you think this is depressing just think about how far New York has fallen. The greatest metropolis in human civilization to the world’s largest ghetto in just two generations.
I grew up in CA in the '50's and '60's. My home, not far from the bay area, was like a paradise - clean, no crime, no bums, lots of small, friendly businesses, good schools, and it was easy to get a job. We used to go to SF to the symphony and had many enjoyable times there. Now, you could not pay me to go to SF - I do not enjoy stepping in shit or getting mugged. Most of what made this state great has been destroyed by the idiots who now run it.
Back when California was thoroughly Conservative and didn't put up with any liberal nonsense. Way before non-Californian transplants arrived, uninvited and desired.
@@dukeon That is only because every state went down due to the poisonous culture before they could surpass what California was. I remember my city in the 1990s, it was a miniature version of this that could have grown into something special but now it is all gone because the internet and the increased power of the media spread the poisonous culture into my state and especially my city to destroy millennials’ minds in even the most conservative states.

Those postcards were so pretty! Would love to travel back to that time and see it in person!🤩🌴🌺⛱
Those folks didn't realize how good they had it.
Absolutely beautiful.
So lovely. I remember alot of these places because I grew up in California. It was beautiful back then. I have such good memories. Thank you 😊
Long ago, California was where many wanted to live, it was like paradise. But no more, it's just heartbreaking now.
thank you!
It’s not heartbreaking. It’s beautiful ☀️

I watch all of these videos at 1.5x speed, and it’s perfect. 👌🏻
My old childhood hometown.
Beautiful glimpse into the past. I wish there were more pictures outside the greater LA area. Coulda sworn San Francisco was in California.
This was during the mid-50s Pandemic. That’s why there’s so much less traffic and crowding 😉
Besides these great pics, Kevin McCloud's Intractable is amazing!

If you tried espousing “liberal” values in 1950s California you would likely be committed before you got anyone to agree to vote for you.
It would be interesting to use the same vantage point to take a'2022 photo.

Southern California along the coast. There is a great deal more to California than this, the tip of the iceberg.
Been turned into a slum land now
