If people laugh or smirk it is their problem not yours. Most of my friends don’t even mention my stutter. We are our own worse enemies.

Yes, Stephen. I've had people walk away when I couldn't say my name, I've had baristas ridicule me in line while trying to order a coffee and drive-thrus are my complete nemesis. I've learned that it's not you, it's them. Hold your head high and keep moving forward.

I feel like my sadness and happiness are connected to my stutter. When I speak fluently i feel so happy, but when i stutter everything changes. I know it’s not good to make your stutter controls your happiness, but it’s so hard for me. Sometimes having friends that love you for who you are helps a lot, they make you feel like you are not awkward and weird.

First, props to you for posting this video! It sure wasn´t an easy decision but in the end I think that it was necessary simply because a lot of people will feel the same way and as a result they won´t feel as alone/depressed/sad anymore knowing we´re all sharing that same pain! Again, I really liked your video! It may be a bit negative/depressing but it shows how most of us truly feel and to say the least I´ve never felt as connected to one of your videos as much as this one! Everything you said, every problem, every situation you described fits me (and others surely too) perfectly!
    Lots of Love

Exactly Donato Tusi, this is real life and sometimes our stutter can bring us to a spiraling depression and sometimes great joy in saying a word that you never thought you could say.

I swear this video almost made me tear up a bit because i can honestly empathize with the emotional toll stuttering can bring upon. But this also brought a smile to my face knowing that i'm not alone. Thank you Téa. This video really was somethin' else :)

My Stuttering Life Thanks man. It's sorta weird because i know that there are many others- millions as a matter of fact- who do stutter. Idk maybe it's because i've honestly come across very few (ranging from literally 2-5 people in my life so far) in person. I think it's videos like these that give me reassurance of not being the only one who feels like this. Oh and Jason's not my real name haha. It's just the name of a comic book character, as so is the picture.

JT I admire you so much because you have the courage to admit to the world how difficult life can be with shuddering. I am older now but I really want to get better at managing the anxiety and shame I feel. Your videos really encourage and help me to face my own shuddering in a more public way. Hopefully before I die I can find a way to feel better about myself and be fluent. Thank you fore being you.

I stutter since 12, part of my school years were a nightmare because of it (mostly reading front of everyone). Going on stage through theater and especially as a singer helped didn't "cured" my stuttering, but it helped me A LOT to improve it and find confidence. Wish you the best Téa, greetings from France !

I also stutter a lot, and this has affected my confidence and I avoid being social but seeing you go ahead and accept and work on the situation rather than give up is soo great. You are inspiration to me and many people who go through same struggle. Thankyou for making these videos.

I too shut myself in my room because of my stutter, but I frequently try to get out of the house, so I will drive to some of my favorite places, I like driving it calms me down a bit, but I don't know how with all these bad drivers on the road lol. and I've been hanging out with old friends from high school, and I ask them if the stutter bothers them, and they said that they are used to it. I feel that because of these experiences I have a much more thicker skin and can take peoples critiques (smiling and other things)

Oh my god, you are awesome. Thank you for posting this! I really needed it today. I just discovered your channel yesterday and it felt really good to listen to someone with such a similar stutter to mine. Like almost identical, actually. I’m covert at work and only my closest friends know I stutter, and today I was having a really difficult time talking and felt exactly like what you are describing. It felt like every single word was a struggle, and I ended up not saying so much of what I wanted to say because it wouldn’t come out.
By the way, I think it’s awesome you are in school to be a teacher. I teach third-grade, and yes, it can be a challenge but stuttering is definitely not a reason not to teach. You can do it! My kids are pretty understanding and for some reason I don’t mind so much stuttering in front of them.
Thanks again for posting! I love your honesty and vulnerability. It’s good to know we are not alone in this journey! ☺️

Exactly Yara, every day is a battle but we fight on and keep moving forward. I can't tell you how many opportunities I missed because of my stutter. Now, all those skills and techniques I have learned in speech therapy have helped me to this day and now I could care less what people think of me and my stutter. It took a long time for me to accept myself for who I am and when I did, everything just fell into place.

  • @MyStutteringLife

Thank you for this video Tea. It's true that we go through stages of depression with our stutter for whatever reason: blocking, facial tics, etc., but the most important aspect is that we keep moving forward. I used to seclude myself from everything from school dances, football games, prom, homecoming, etc.. until I realized that I was missing out on some of the greatest experiences in life. I started stuttering at age 5 from a dog attack and 42 years later, I learned to deal with my stutter on a very practical level. I gave up caring about what other people thought of my stutter. I learned to LOVE myself and accept who I am. I tell people right off the bat, "I stutter and life goes on. The world doesn't stop just because I can't say my name." Since that huge weight has been lifted, I feel so much better and my speech has improved quite a bit. I've had 20 years of speech therapy and I went from 0% fluency to 90%. I still have my good and bad days but I how I deal with them now is dramatically different then back then. I know speak in front of hundreds of people and it feels great (it's still scary) but I am embrace the fear and transfer it to excitement. You have such a great channel, keep up the good work!

hi , I stutter too and can totally relate to this. Have you tried McGuire programme- they are international stuttering programme; where stutterers(been on programme longer) help stutterers(new students). They focus on costal diaphragm breathing, resisting time pressure and using a basic speech cycle. It also gives you a community of so many other stutterers of all ages and personalities ! so you won't be the only one who stammers.
Something that helps me is pauses, breathing and smiling-normally when i smile, listener feels less awkward. if they still look awkward, i sometimes tell them i have a stutter-which removes pressure from me to be fluent and makes listener feel more comfortable.
and remember stuttering isn't a big deal. I still think you sound very articulate and eloquent. And youb come across as having a great personality :)

David, I agree with your post but to a certain degree. I used to be secluded for almost a decade because of my stutter. After I turned 40, I would internalize the depression and anger until it manifested into physical symptoms that my doctor wanted to throw pills at. Now at the age of 47, I could care less what people think of my stutter and I live a positive life not dwelling on what I cannot do speech-wise. I know I have my good days and my bad but when I am positive, I can see that there is light at the end of the tunnel.

  • @themananswer2250

It would make sense to me that some stutterers may try to adjust their voices to attempt to push out their stutter. For example talking louder or higher or lower pitched. It would be neat to find out if changing the pitch of your voice can reduce interruptions but never talk louder to eliminate the stutter. That would end up scratching or hurting your voice in some way. I always thought the human voice acts just like a record player does. Just like the needle can scratch the vinyl your vocal cords can also be scratched if you abuse them constantly.

I relate to this so much. I glad you made this video its encouraging to know im not the only one going thru stuttering. Like there isnt a single day that goes by where i dont think to my self if I just didnt have this stupid stutter id go talk to them,or i'd do this, or id be happier. Its so fustrating because i feel like noone understands how much it sucks to live like that, having every sentence i formulate be a challenge is emotionally draining. and thru out my life ive only ever met one person who has a stutter and im 17 so it really feels like its just me dealing with it.

From listening to you I can tell that it's not you or your mind. It's a muscular trigger from your chest area.. It has nothing to do with you, there is nothing wrong with you. Yes, we can think that the stutter is what is wrong.. Or, its not right... But it's not either wrong or right. In the same way that a river that flows downstream, or the direction the wind blows isn't wrong or right. But something to keep in mind is that emotions, whether positive ones that make us feel happy or excited or negative ones that make us feel sad, angry or upset will cause certain muscles in our bodies to react in certain ways. With your stutter its the tightness and tension in your chest/heart that is triggering it. A good word to deeply ponder, contemplate, and meditate on is 'equanimity'. What does it mean? How can you embody it? Equanimity means even... Calm. Neither up nor down... Regardless of the circumstances. Imagine a really calm lake or pond without ripples and disturbances where it clearly reflects and mirrors the sky perfectly. No excitement.. No sadness.. Just calm and at peace. :) you're good. :)

You can explore laryngeal massage and see if it relieves when you get stuck in your throat or helps you out in any way. It can also improve singing voices so that's pretty cool. Perhaps this could help stutterers in general. Although it is sad, I'm glad you have your singing voice as an escape. I think the way it works is as you sing your brain will relax and hold your tongue and larynx in place. I find that a little interesting.

Hi Tea, do you have a support group of other people who stutter that you can access? Being able to talk to other people who stutter about how you are feeling and have contact with people who really know what you are going through has really helped me. These need to be people that you can ideally get face to face with, or at the least talk over the phone with.

I tried focusing on the 'ee' sound thinking that i could quickly spit out the 'f' and the stutter would appear. i practised it off the mic for a while and then when i felt good about, hit record. it didnt go to plan lol
