As a Chinese, I want to say that Gaokao is the most fair exam. Whether you are poor or rich, this exam determines your destiny. Even if your father is poor and your grandfather is poor, as long as you study hard, you can change all this, from a farmer to the president of the company. However, with the rapid development of China, the pressure on young people is increasing. Parents often tell us: "if others work harder than you, you will not be able to find a job and live in this busy country after graduation." Therefore, there are more and more talented people, and the standard of "excellence" is higher and higher. In the past, getting 80 points would be considered outstanding, and now getting 90 points would be considered not hard enough - because others have got 95 points. The Chinese call this phenomenon "neijuan". As a high school student, I'm going to attend Gaokao next year, which I feel a lot of pressure.
@@hrshtmlng On internet it says Gaokao is the toughest exam, but IIT-JEE is not far behind it is the second toughest exam in the whole world. Moreover, UPSC is the 3rd toughest exam. So all the aspirants are practising for almost equally tough exams.

Asian students are super clever and super focused on doing their best. In my ex Italian school, some classmates used to enter the classroom riding their moped, parking it inside and insulting the teacher with zero respect all the time. This is the difference between a working world and a dead world.
That’s for sure. East Asia is destined to lead the world. Asian people are amazing. Western people can’t still realize it because they keep on considering themselves “first world” while their countries are actually devoured by social and financial crisis. And moreover Westerns are lazy.
It really makes you happy to live in the west I.e. UK or USA. The pressure in these Asian countries is so much more intense and because a lot of the students study very hard. You have to be exceptional to stand out.
Do the students have to give this exam for 9 hours straight or is it conducted in different shifts? I mean, are they allowed to take a break between those 9 hours of exam?
This “GaoKao” is absolutely insane. When that day arrives, policeman and woman are stationed everywhere, the streets are quiet, people are not allowed to honk their horns, taxi drivers give students free rides and some places handout food. This test basically determines majority of the Chinese’s, living in China, future. What tier of university they can go in, what future masters they can pursue, what PhD or future work they can get. It is extremely unforgiving, but the ones “pass” are probably one of the most hard working and talented individuals in the world.
@@joanna5213 False. China's two best university's 北大(Peking University) and 清华(Tsinghua University) are almost impossible to enter into with money. If they do they would only study majors like arts or language (things of least importance). Both universities are state-owned. They are part of a program in China to produce very talented engineers, scientists, politicians, etc. These students later on begin their master, PhD, Doctorate in Harvard, MIT, Yale, Oxford, Princeton, etc. Wealthy individuals would just sent their kid straight into Harvard or something in the US. To those who are saying South Korean and Chinese exams are most difficult, go and search JEE ADVANCED, UPSC, CA Exams in India. They may be not the most difficult but yes they are very difficult!
Japan used to have the most difficult college entrance exams in the World, but it has now been scaled way less difficult to accommodate for a greater portion of the population to go to college. In fact, they encourage even more people to continue their undergrad and postgrad studies to increase the quality of education and level of knowledge among the population. China, on the other hand, got stuck with maintaining the difficulty that it puts a huge strain on the youth population. The prospect of failing gaokao forces other parents to reach deep into their thin pockets to send their kids to college outside Chine (e.g. USA, Hongkong). Even then, that doesn't assure their kids anything, because some are driven towards death and corruption by other rich Chinese kids to be involved in a cheating scandal.

@Tejas Misra Doesn't matter if that dude solved it in 30 min, geniuses exist and he would have solved the questions of his specialty in gaokao at the same time too. Secondly JEE is an _engineering_ entrance exam, it's syllabus contains questions from college level concepts and not basic highschool so of course a person with an engineering degree should be able to solve it, doesn't mean that they can solve all of them. The level of questions in JEE as said by 'experts' does have a slight edge than gaokao. Lastly, gaokao is for admission in many different colleges where they take you in based on your exam result while JEE is basically just for admitting into the top IITs. Mainly 1.5 million students competing for 7000 seats. And I think thats insane. But I dont think these exams should be compared, students go through equal pressure under all of them
@Messy Yees right?? In my school we never had multiple choice test, there are just questions and you have to answer them on your own. The exams are 6 hours long so you have to write a lot

In the States I went to a private college that accepted everyone. Their model was to give everyone a chance. Most of their students excelled. Go figure. No entrance exams, only assessment exams to see where a student should start. No essays, no committee reviews, no letters of recommendation. None of that. Once registered success or failure was completely on the student. I worked at the college while I attended classes. I had access to student transcripts. The chinese school system is a disaster!! It doesn‘t help the students remember the things they learned, puts them in an unbelievable amount of stress and anxiety and basically robs them of their childhood and teenager life which is the only time in their life where they can be kids! Edit: You guys really starting a heated discussion over here! Well after reading all the comments I have to say that I personally don’t have a better solution for a school system but I still believe that there can be a better system... I am half german, half Chinese and I can say that in Germany absolutely everyone, even the poorest kids of them all can become a doctor later on if they just study hard enough AND they don’t get robbed of their childhood and don’t get tons of anxiety and pressure!
Oh. No it's quite effective at helping kids remember things, but it doesn't help them understand things. They Know the answer because they memorized what it said in their notes but they don't understand why the answer is what it is. In the u.s we teach u to understand the reasoning behind the answer so you can come up with the answer in different scenarios. Not so in china.
Say this to those kids living in poor families who want to change their life path downside up in this way, many poor students I knew about now are living in a decent life with a nice engineering job, and their parents or single parent no longer have to living in poverty but are able to have fun in many different countries, while, American poor students and their family pretty much will stay poor forever cuz they can’t afford uni education and the donation for those uni. Now the new generation in China is more talented cuz evidences of bing creative like writing poem, music, invention, new technology are everywhere, and as for the quantity of these talents, we have more than you can imagine.

We need school to find relation/friends who will help us in the future. We as parents also must be smart and wise to not force our children to be smart in all lessons..
dionnc I agree. School is important in the sense that it gives you a broad range of curriculum so that you’re somewhat educated in all the subjects. However, depending on your passion, you’ll be able to pick the subject that you’ve enjoyed the most and specialize it through further education. I also do believe that school is not a guaranteed way to success. It can help but it’s not 100%. School is necessary for those pursing STEM.

Suddenly my final test doesn't look so bad anymore
Same
We IIT JEE aspirants can understand their pain.
Now imagine if there was only IIT JEE to get into engineering. Nothing else. Thats Gaokao. Its horrendous.
@@DebjitMajumdar and imagine when 68% seats are reserved in total
Thats jee
Here in delhi university evan a topper who scores 99% or sometime evan 100% strugle to get addmission in the uni .... thanks to the reservation and quota system 🤣🤣
That's not true
Wrong info
Thats true. However smart you maybe you gotta work hard.
Okay 99 is too much
People with 97 % struggle to get in D.U
But there are also more exams in india. So not doing well in say JEE u can apply for state colleges or private.
Chinese children are so strong in many subjects, not all, but they learn very hard and therefore China succeed so much economically.
Our system here is kinda similar to this. First, we have to take an exam at the end of the middle school which always changes every couple of years in terms of questions, time, date etc. And we have to take two exams at the end of the high school which also change every couple of years like our high school exam.
It’s been almost 4 years since I took gaokao, not gonna lie i still have nightmares about this. And I’m so glad that I have grown up.
@Auxerre bro being Asian is born with depression
Respect to Chinese Students from India. We students here in India also in same condition for JEE/NEET
Getting this recommended just 10 days before JEE
😓😓
There should be a rule regarding the amount of burden there should be on a student's shoulder. this is not okay at ALL
Every student consider his exam as the World's toughest exam
honestly i really miss the days when i was in high school and preparing gaokao together with all my high school friends
Guys don't fight, all the exams are tough for all the aspirants approaching it. All the best everybody!!! ❤
Probably harder than getting into Harvard by the looks of those books. Go Chinese! 😊👍🏻
All the best to those taking gaokao and anyone taking major exams in their life! You have worked hard! :)
I wish there was one major entrance exam worldwide it would be fun to see which country tops
And one day, they go to work for someone not graduated in high school for the rest of their life..
End of story
Maybe in America but not China. School is pretty important in Asian countries.
this is the american thinking that my americanized kids falls behind. this thinking is how slaves and lack of opportunity are created.
@@Justin-ev8nn I'm from asian, i do agree that school is important, but it isn't to be smart in all fields..
We need school to looking for interest in the field that we like (passion) and develop it until it will become our work/income one day.
If you’re interested in business/entrepreneurship then school really isn’t worth the debt.
