    Hi, I planted 8 green giants in my parents property. I spaced them 5-6 feet apart and staggered them. I planted them 10 feet away from the road and now I’m worried maybe I planted them too close? So I can literally trim the base of them with hedge trimmers in the future if I need to? Will that mess the overall shape of them of? I hope I didn’t make a mistake planting them too close to the road..

    • @KentuckyKoozie
      @KentuckyKoozie  6 месяцев назад +1

      They have fall needle drop and some leaves turn brown in the winter. That is normal. Fall needle drop
      Is kinda on the interior or the tree and pretty uniform throughout. I have had a couple branches go brown and I trimmed them out. I also had one tree turn completely brown and die. I still don’t know why. It was on the end of the row by a ditch so maybe it got flooded or some chemicals came down the drainage. Not sure what you have. You said you trimmed them last year and they didn’t come back. I usually just trim the tips and shape them up some. Without seeing your tree it is hard to say. I don’t know how big they are and how bad the dead areas are. When my trees were tiny I lost several. I just kept putting new ones in the dead ones spot.

I didn’t want to wait forever for a hedge but forever has finally come. I just planted 10 Green Giants B & B about a month ago.
    They are about ten feet high, from ground to tip.
    They are planted 3 foot 9 inches apart ( on center)
    I want a thick dense 16 foot high hedge, but I am already worried about if I can keep it at only 16 feet high.

    • @KentuckyKoozie
      @KentuckyKoozie  Год назад

      Yeah, with green giants they really like to grow up. If you have your heart set on 16 feet or there is a reason why it has to be 16 feet, then you may have to trim the main central leader. In my video I talk about how I got mine to grow up in a cone. I did this by eliminating all double tops and focusing the plants energy into one main lead. You would need to do kinda the opposite. Maybe as they approach your desired height you would need to start topping them. It will most likely need to be done every year. Possibly every two years but it will be more difficult to prune the longer you let them grow. The plants will be more of a rectangular shape and flat on the tops. I may do another video and show some pictures of my green giants from 2015. I can only find a couple photos so far. I know I took some pics when they were first planted as babies. I hope this helps.

    • @slickchick5811
      @slickchick5811 Год назад

      There's a mid sized thuja that would work better that only grows around 14ish or so. If you crowd them over time the bottoms get weak and thin from dieback because the roots are competing for nutrients.

    If you for instance cut a foot off the top to have a flat top hedge looking row, Would they die or just not grow tall anymore ? I have quite a few I’ve planted that I want to be a hedge

    • @KentuckyKoozie
      @KentuckyKoozie  Год назад

      They won’t die it will just slow vertical growth. You will have flat tops with multiple leads. You will have to keep topping them each year as they will still want to grow vertically but more in a box shape and not a cone. They will also be really bushy and thick because topping will encourage growth in the center of the plant.

    • @KentuckyKoozie
      @KentuckyKoozie  Год назад +1

      I would say at least 4 feet away from the fence on each side if you are thinking long term growth potential. You could do less but they will need a trim. Also, do you want a stately free standing tree look, or do you want a thick privacy hedge? Mine are only a couple feet away from the fence and they did just fine, but I now have to go into my neighbors yard and try to trim them back some. I hope that helps.

      Only like 2 feet. it is shaded by the fence but once they are above the fence they are expanding oner it. I would have to ask my neighbors to go in their yard to prune them. It is worth considering planting farther away but I don't have any problems.

      I may have over crowded a bit. When I get a chance I will measure for you. I wouldn’t be afraid to go 5-6 feet apart. It just takes a few years to get going. I hardly did anything. I mulched them and watered when they were young. I may have put some osmocote fertilizer and did some low dose organic in the beginning. Once they get rooted and growing I have basically left them alone. It has been amazing because I literally just took a hand shovel and stuck them in my yards soil. I did lose a few as babies but I had extra and just rotated them around. I’m in Kentucky I think it is zone 6. I will get a measurement for you when I get a minute. Just remember they get big. It is just a matter of how long you want to wait for privacy.
