Yeah, you are back! 🎉 I think I liked The Perfume more than you did, but I also agree about the movie being better. Interestingly the author is a famous screenplay writer as well. He is also known for being very reclusive, almost always refuses giving interviews and only a few pictures of him exist.
Fraser, I always love the books/vinyl/etc. that you feature on the shelves behind you. I always try to see what’s spotlighted- that Robert Johnson record is fantastic! Goodnight Punpun seems interesting- the bird element reminds me of the graphic memoir Pros and Cons List for Strong Feelings but with a totally different tone/subject matter. The magic system in Assassin of Reality sounds really interesting!
Hah thanks a lot! It’s fun moving stuff around. The magic system in the Vita Nostra series is one of my favourites. Very fresh and interesting, I think.
I had a fun time with The Witch King, but I agree that the past storyline was more engaging. I think I'm pretty happy with commercial SFF in general, though! 😁
I think I just expected too much, to some degree. And I don’t like tonal shifts, with the exception of Murderbot, where for whatever reason, it just seems to work for me lol
Inio Asano’s stories are so intriguing and his art is outstanding. In Goodnight Punpun, I guess he draws himself as a bird because he’s the character for readers to identify with, and the bird is a placeholder for the reader. I enjoyed Solanin, and the Dead Dead Demon series even more than Punpun. I thought of Punpun when I read Will Betke-Brunswick’s graphic memoir, A Pros and Cons List for Strong Feelings, because they use birds to portray human characters too.
Is the random insert of a boy in backgrounds, like in his bedroom window sometimes, what punpun actually looks like, then? I’ve heard Solanin was a lot of peoples favourites, I might give it a shot.
Been away for a bit but wanted to check in with my book friends and seems like most of your recent reads had more potential and good starts than satisfying endings. Leviathan wakes seems like something my son would like though. Good to see you and happy summer reading! Hope everything else is going well too.
Pleased you enjoyed Liberation Day. I actually DNF’ed Lincoln In The Bardo 😱😱 Will probably get kicked off booktube now 😝Will give this one a try if I see it in the library.
You’ve convinced me to continue on with Caliban’s War. I thought Leviathan Wakes was fun but not outstanding. However, if it gets better I am willing to go along for the ride.
It only gets better. The vomit zombie thing actually becomes pertinent, the weird romance thing with Miller isn’t a mistake they repeat, and the absolute best characters of the series are not in the first book. It becomes a lot more grounded and runs on the psychology of the characters making the plot, rather than it just feeling like commercial fiction.
I was semi interested in the new Martha Wells, that’s now bumped way down my list 😂 I still need to get to Vita Nostra! It’s been on my shelf quite a while… I’m really enjoying Leviathan, so if this is the ‘worst’ in the series I am very excited for the rest! (Still only 2/3 of the way through though 🤪).
Yeah Wells is usually good, this one just wasn’t for me. Vita Nostra is so good! It does take up a lot of space in your brain though, since it’s also kind of a mystery so I was just enthralled reading it. It’s def the worst!! I can’t wait for my favourite character to arrive!
Ah! I did not know there was a film adaptation of Perfume - interesting! I will have to check it out. I did a project in my history class on The Daughter of Time back in middle school and since you and Shelly have both talked about it, I really want to go back and read it again. It's sooo good as I recall.
@@SpringboardThought 😂 I’m looking for a nice used copy because I had to return it to the library before I was finished and I want to start again and annotate!
Although I am reading a fair number of comics now I haven't dipped into manga yet. So I am interested in your project reading from top manga lists. Maybe you can do a video eventually about the hits and misses you have encountered.
Ah, pity about Perfume! I guess it was easier for me to like the book better because I read it before watching the movie (and also, not such a huge fan of Ben Whishaw...). And yes, Daughter of Time!
Yeah, you are back! 🎉

Haha :)
interesting about the author, I thought the book was older than it was!
As usual, you have introduced me to a lot of new books. Hope you’re doing well. 😊💙
Thank you! Same to you~~

You have me curious about Goodnight Punpun now. Funny and depressing sounds great. 👍
It’s both of those things! I would be curious what you make of it!

@@SpringboardThoughtThere’s something so endearing about Murderbot 🩷

@@SpringboardThought Yes, I think Asano is showing that the MC is seen as human by everyone else. Maybe?

Perfume… one of my most hated reads in college. 🙄 Sniffing gym clothes… hard no. I want to read Leviathan! ❤
I dunnnooo how much you’d like it, it’s pretty commercial, and fun - but also has some stuff that’d bug you I think

Thank you! Hope everything is well for you, too. Leviathan Wakes is a lot of fun. I liked the show too, on Prime.
I remember liking Perfume, but I've never seen the film to compare it to
Yeah it’s really novel, so I think had I read it first, I would have been more enamoured with that, than the movie.
Pleased you enjoyed Liberation Day. I actually DNF’ed Lincoln In The Bardo 😱😱 Will probably get kicked off booktube now 😝Will give this one a try if I see it in the library.
Hah yeah Lincoln feels very… American lol which makes sense.
Hi 👋 Fraser. The best books I’ve read so far this month are
Close to Home by Michael Magee
Kala by Colin Walsh
The New Life by Tom Crewe

Hello! Thanks for letting me know, I don’t think I’ve heard of these yet!

I hope you enjoy it all over again ^^
I have been reading Saunders’ nonfiction on writing short stories and it is awesome! (A Swim in the Pond in the Rain)
I’ve heard that was very good! I almost picked it up on sale last year, kind of great not nabbing it
@@SpringboardThought great?
@@novelideea I don’t remember what that auto corrected, probably - regret-not nabbing it. I do wish I’d gotten it lol

I bet I’d have liked the book more if I hadn’t seen the movie first, and multiple times! And I adore Whishaw so lol Daughter of Time was so good!
I thought Leviathan Wakes was ok..gave it a 3. Hearing you say this is a favorite series and gets better makes me want to try book two!
Yeah Leviathan Wakes was noooot amazing. It does only get much, much better
