    Yeah, you are back! 🎉
    I think I liked The Perfume more than you did, but I also agree about the movie being better.
    Interestingly the author is a famous screenplay writer as well. He is also known for being very reclusive, almost always refuses giving interviews and only a few pictures of him exist.

      Haha :)
      interesting about the author, I thought the book was older than it was!

    Fraser, I always love the books/vinyl/etc. that you feature on the shelves behind you. I always try to see what’s spotlighted- that Robert Johnson record is fantastic!
    Goodnight Punpun seems interesting- the bird element reminds me of the graphic memoir Pros and Cons List for Strong Feelings but with a totally different tone/subject matter.
    The magic system in Assassin of Reality sounds really interesting!

      Hah thanks a lot! It’s fun moving stuff around.
      The magic system in the Vita Nostra series is one of my favourites. Very fresh and interesting, I think.

    I had a fun time with The Witch King, but I agree that the past storyline was more engaging. I think I'm pretty happy with commercial SFF in general, though! 😁

      I think I just expected too much, to some degree. And I don’t like tonal shifts, with the exception of Murderbot, where for whatever reason, it just seems to work for me lol

    Inio Asano’s stories are so intriguing and his art is outstanding. In Goodnight Punpun, I guess he draws himself as a bird because he’s the character for readers to identify with, and the bird is a placeholder for the reader. I enjoyed Solanin, and the Dead Dead Demon series even more than Punpun. I thought of Punpun when I read Will Betke-Brunswick’s graphic memoir, A Pros and Cons List for Strong Feelings, because they use birds to portray human characters too.

    • @SpringboardThought
      @SpringboardThought  Год назад +1

      Is the random insert of a boy in backgrounds, like in his bedroom window sometimes, what punpun actually looks like, then? I’ve heard Solanin was a lot of peoples favourites, I might give it a shot.

    Been away for a bit but wanted to check in with my book friends and seems like most of your recent reads had more potential and good starts than satisfying endings. Leviathan wakes seems like something my son would like though. Good to see you and happy summer reading! Hope everything else is going well too.

    You’ve convinced me to continue on with Caliban’s War. I thought Leviathan Wakes was fun but not outstanding. However, if it gets better I am willing to go along for the ride.

    • @SpringboardThought
      @SpringboardThought  Год назад +1

      It only gets better. The vomit zombie thing actually becomes pertinent, the weird romance thing with Miller isn’t a mistake they repeat, and the absolute best characters of the series are not in the first book. It becomes a lot more grounded and runs on the psychology of the characters making the plot, rather than it just feeling like commercial fiction.

    I was semi interested in the new Martha Wells, that’s now bumped way down my list 😂
    I still need to get to Vita Nostra! It’s been on my shelf quite a while…
    I’m really enjoying Leviathan, so if this is the ‘worst’ in the series I am very excited for the rest! (Still only 2/3 of the way through though 🤪).

    • @SpringboardThought
      @SpringboardThought  Год назад +1

      Yeah Wells is usually good, this one just wasn’t for me.
      Vita Nostra is so good! It does take up a lot of space in your brain though, since it’s also kind of a mystery so I was just enthralled reading it.
      It’s def the worst!! I can’t wait for my favourite character to arrive!
