Oh wow - 59 years of age, average windsurfer (harness, foot straps, water starts, fast tacks - yes: carve gybes - no, don’t be silly). So today I buy a wing and am determined to learn foiling. Too many lagers and too many you-tube videos later that make things look sooooo easy I stumble on this gem! Thank you for showing reality and providing some laugh out loud moments. Totally inspired by your tenacity and spirit. I will follow your lead and learn this new skill - maybe with a shorter mast - 95kg dropping from that height wouldn’t be pretty. Love and admiration Mike

    This is a fabulous video,
showing what the progress looks like.
I'm 120 kgs & 55 yrs old which is very challenging on a 143 litre board but I feel after seeing this video I'm feeling alot more confident that I will get there ! Well done on your progress & thanks for the inspiration video.

Well done. I am at day 16 and 3 seconds on foil rides. Frustrating progressing so slowly but still loving it… mostly.

On a Facebook site for 40+ year old wing foilers I've been referring learners to watch this video, because it's really the only one that shows in accurate way what those first days are like, even for an expert waterperson in very good learning conditions (good wind flat water).... ultimately succeeding. Only thing missing is walk of shame.

Thanks for this video! It made me laugh and also made me feel supported in all my crashing but I've been crashing on the board/foil much longer than 3 days. Just starting to get up on foil slowly but need to just keep it going and plane out to not stall out. You have windsurfing background I have no windsport or even skiing background. Awesome job!!

Fantastic some one showing what it's like when learning.
I have got to go through all that. Learning on the beach with mountain board at mo getting used to the wing. Come from sailing, surfing and skateboarding I hope that will help😂😂

Great progress in a short time span! Bending my knees also helped a lot. It looks to me like your rear foot is too far back. I believe it should be in front of the mast. That would allow better weight transfer to the front leg which you need to level the board.

Yesterday was my "Day 3" experience. Unfortunately, it took more than three days to for me get to this point. But wow - instead of 3 seconds or 5 seconds "on-foil," I seemed to be on-foil at will. Two problems though. First is that I have a favored side, and that's the side that came together. My weak side... well, I guess that's my next to-do. The other problem is that is spite of the fact that I was really powered yesterday, I still ended-up far downwind. So much of my time during this learning phase is walking upwind, carrying a bunch of gear that gets heavier every step.
My one suggestion to those trying to learn this challenging sport: start with a BIG board. Because there's a lot of chop and waves where I'm learning, I was unable to get much accomplished with a weight+30 board. I actually picked up a larger board (used, of course) and now the standing part of the puzzle is solved. Yesterday stronger winds were the magic that brought it all together.

Thanks so much for sharing! I also find that having a big board and foil works wonders!! I can easily go far upwind. When the wind picks up, going downwind becomes a little more challenging, but so easy to just de-power the wing and control the board with weight distribution. 🤟

Thanks for this eye opening video!
My wife and I come from a WS background. I'm wondering did you ever try a ~2500 front wing? Could it have made the learning process easier?
Hope you'managed some gybing by now :-)

    • @KarovanTonder
      @KarovanTonder  2 года назад +1

Thank you so much for your nice feedback! I haven’t used the 2500 wing yet, but i am sure it will get you up and planing in no time. For the winds in Langebaan and my weight, the 1900 has been perfect for learning and cruising. It gets onto the plane super easy and you can cruise at very low, stable speed. I also love the versatility of the 1900 for a wide wind range. I postponed the gybe learning process until i return from Luderitz Speed Challenge to avoid any possibility for injury! 😄👌 Cant wait to nail it soon! Enjoy the learning process and let me know if you have any questions.

      @@KarovanTonder thanks 🙂
In terms of actual wing size, did you find the 5.5 too big?
      I have a choice between a 4.2 and a 5.2 for learning, for a rider that is 165cm tall and 60kg
I'm tempted by the 5.2 to ensure there is enough power, but thinking whether it might be too large to handle for her.
      Thanks again!

Doing good! I'm just as new to this as you are.
Couple of little observations. One, I think the wing was a little to large. You look well overpowered and that the wind is controlling Karo and not the other way around. With the powerful wing and the 1900 foil it's a handful to control.
Two, place you feet more on the centre line of the board. Us windsurfers want to get onto the windward rail to apply pressure to the fin. That doesn't work in foiling. When cruising you want your back foot near the mast of the foil while the front foot and weight applied controls your ride height.

Hehehe!! Yes! When the wind picks up it gets a little scary… but I mainly want to do wing foiling in those really light-wind days, when it’s too light for windsurfing. So the big setup is awesome for me for that purpose 🤟

@@KarovanTonder that‘s what I said too (wanting to wing on light wind days only) But now I‘m so hooked on learning something new that I only got onto the windsurf board 3 times during the last 3 week surfing trip 😬😁 It‘s fun to learn new skills 🙂 Already added a smaller wing and a new front wing for the foil. Goodbye, light wind plan! 😂

A few questions. Did you have some practice on the water first with a non-foil board like a paddle board? Second, this spot looks like off shore wind or a long distance from shore, did you have issues drifting downwind and needing to swim back or have some help getting back upwind? My own learning is limited by my willingness to only gradually do longer runs due to downwind issues and tiring out from recovering from downwind adventures. Regardless, it's impressive that you could achieve this in 3 days and it is truly tiring to wipe out a lot. You didn't show any video of you flopping yourself back up on the board.

Hi David, thanks for you message. I am glad you enjoyed the video! Yes, prior to getting onto a real foil board, I first learnt how to manage the wing by going with an inflatable SUP board. This helped a lot to get the feel for the wing first. This piece of beach from which the footage was taken runs perpendicular to the wind, so I didn’t have so much of an offshore wind problem. However, the tides posed a problem in this regard. With a strong outgoing tide, I had to really work hard to learn quickly how to position the wing to go sharp upwind so I gain some ground, even when not foiling yet. I did fall soo many times, but it helped me to gain so much confidence and, like you said, makes you very fit! Enjoy the learning curve and let me know anytime if you need more tips 🤟

You’re the 2nd pro windsurfer trying to wing foil video that I have come across. I didn’t know you were until I read your channel description. I must say I’m shocked at how bad you both were. If I hadn’t seen the videos and someone bet me, I would bet you guys would hop on and go.
Thanks for sharing though. It is eye opening.
For those of you wanting to learn or in the process, I watched a video that made a ton of sense. He said walk back and forth on the beach with the kite until controlling it and moving from side to side becomes second nature. The idea is you will then only need to worry about the board when you get in the water.
