      @@Wheels518 That looks like *way* more than two weeks of riding experience - her hips stay glued to the horse during the bucks, she was ready to go up with the rear, and she doesn't crouch forward until she's looking for a chance to dismount (...looks like she's talking to the handlers on the ground..) and then times the dismount and is calmly down... That's the sort of comfort with bucking that usually takes a couple years and an experience with bucking to develop.

    • @scarlett8895
      @scarlett8895 Год назад +33

      Nornally you would dismount by putting all your weight on one leg stand on the stirrup and raising the other to go over the horse and to the ground.
      If you imagine the movement, you can easily realize that doing that with a crazed horse could be extrememly dangerous as by moving he could simply throw off your balance and make you fall, maybe with one of your feet still stuck in the stirrup, and drag you around or kick you.
      The emergency dismount is all about finding good timing, strongly holding onto the horse's maine with your hands and kind of leaning on him, letting go of your stirrups first to free your legs, and sliding down the side at the right moment.

    As an ex cast member, I do firmly believe child leashes are a fantastic idea for kids at Disney for safety. However, it doesn't appear that it would have done a thing in this situation. Kid accidentally let go of the balloon. Merida did a wonderful job staying on and dismounting when safe, the handlers did great soothing and handling Jacob the horse, and the parade team was on standby but not getting involved and adding more issues. Overall, it was handled exactly how I expect cm's to handle it, wonderfully.

    • @KennyVee
      @KennyVee 4 года назад +126

      If the dad hadn't been watching his kid, they would have made it all the way to the horse and may have ended up getting hurt. The balloon being released by the kid as the dad did his job and pulled them back was a byproduct, but he DID keep his kid away from the horse. It was definitely an unfortunate situation and I'm sad that it happened, but without having his kid on a leash (I have complicated feelings about child leashes), he did the best that could have been expected when his kid started dashing out into the street. The speed at which kids do such things means the dad WAS watching his kid, and showed admirable reflexes in preventing this from being worse.
      Props go to all cast members involved in this situation (Merida, the horse handlers, and that manager, even the stage hand who followed Merida offstage to make sure she was okay). This could have ended VERY badly and instead only resulted in some frayed nerves. These cast members turned an unfortunate situation into a minor hiccup instead of the disaster that it could have ended up as.
      My only qualm is the mom who asks her kid why she's crying. BECAUSE THERE'S A HORSE IN DISTRESS AND SHE KNOWS IT AND IS PROBABLY A BIT SCARED. I would have cried too, at her age. You can't hold kids to the "hold it in" standard that adults hold themselves to. She "Let It Go" and let her feelings show. This is something that should not result in the kid being chastised.
      Let the kid who tried to run out to Merida know that there are times that you cannot just run out into a performance, but also kids who react to what they see (especially in such unprecedented times where kids are trying to process a LOT of bad news) shouldn't be chastised for showing emotion.

    I'm impressed. The horse must be really well trained to calm down so quickly. Horses get spooked easily and when they do, they won't stay still for anybody. It's why, when a horse spooks themself in an arena, everybody just lets it run around the arena for a while to calm itself down before even attempting to approach it. The horse let the handlers stay near him, and calmed down in what, like 20 seconds? That's good training, and shows good trust between handler and horse. Elsewise that horse would have broken away from the handlers and run amock (nobody can control a giant horse like that if the horse doesn't want them to)

      Disney actually has a rigorous training program for all horses that come to their ranch and will be used IN the parks. Tons of desensitization, tons of exposure to noises, people, etc.
      In this situation you can see the horse brace his hind end to see if whatever was touching him would stop, when it didn’t that’s when his horse instinct of “get it away” kicked in, also doesn’t help he couldn’t see what was “attacking” him.
      Props to the handlers and “Merida”, kept his feet moving in a circle to prevent a dead bolt down the slippery street, got him calm and all ended well.

The horse calmed down even with the "predator" still attached to his leg, listening to his handlers telling him it's OK. The rider did an awesome job of performing an emergency dismount in a long dress and jumping clear. Horses, regardless of size and presence, are big chickens. They run first, think later. It says a lot for this horse's training and his innate temperament that he did not drag the whole crew all the way to the stable area.

I don't think the best trained horse would stay calm in that kind of scenario. I don't think they should allow any balloons on the parade routes with horses. They were extremely lucky that it wasn't more crowded. I've gone to Disneyland parades where there are hundreds of families lining the sidewalks from the curb to at least 6 feet back. I know that. That Merida clearly rides and what idiot would have inexperienced horse handlers handling horses in a parade? And the lack of concern from most of those bystanders was scary. People don’t tend to realize how dangerous horses are or how fast they can move when they want to. I was once with a group of new riders who were putting a horse back in his field and didn’t know why I told them to stop at the gate. They were shocked when a galloping horse came into view and at how quickly he was moving (I’d heard him coming, they didn’t know what a gallop sounds like).

    Props to the horse team and Merida for how you all handled this working with these big horses can be scary and we train them but there is no amount of training that will stop a horse from getting scared round of applause from this equestrian

    "What? What are you crying for?"
    Because the child still has emotions and knows she's done something wrong, even if it was an accident. You're teaching that child not to care for others...
    Orrrrr, you've already corrupted her so much that she's crying because now her balloon is gone. Never mind the people and the animal that were in danger.
    Heaven forbid the animal freaked out and a customer was harmed. You'd probably ask for it to be put down. Clearly an untrainable, wild beast. smh
    Good job to Merida and the other cast members for getting the situation under control. Lord knows you don't get paid enough for it. Much love!

    Came to the comments to find a "ThaTs HoRse ABuSe!!!" And I'm pleasantly surprised to see that there aren't any (at least at the top)
    The rider is amazing, looks like she took some lessons and big praise to her (and the handlers!!!) For not freaking out.
    The situation stayed under control.
    The horse did amazing! Really well trained and desensitized, took the scary situation really well
