REGARDING THE PHONE THING: Yeah okay I'm owning up to this one, it's borderline embarrassing how stupid a point that was. Sam and Max fighting over the phone is one of the most frequent running gags in the entire series. Given that it's /here/, yeah, it's kind of the perfect way to pose these two together. I think the point I wanted to get across was that it doesn't work as well without some sort of larger office diorama to rest it in, but even that's a pretty weak argument. Truth be told, I was just miffed that it was only there as an opportunity to charge a higher price when I personally would've been happier with a lower price that just includes the "essentials". Cool? Cool.
they could have sold it on the sams set, since he is the one answering most of the time, and with max, just give him more guns, or a separate piece that represents when he was killed by a death laser and his ears were the only thing left
Yeeeeeeaaaaaah that one's on me. I *think* the point I was trying to make was that the phone doesn't work as well on the floor without some sort of larger office set, but you're totally right that them fighting over the phone is a *way* better fit for Sam and Max than some action pose, even if those are maybe easier in a vacuum without any extra stuff
honestly, rats are such a thing with Sam and Max because Steve Purcell likes drawing rats. It's not so much a game thing, it's just because it's Steve Purcell related.
Well there's Jimmy two teeth who lives in the office in the first two telltale seasons. Though the rat figure doesn't have a hat so it could be his son who swears a lot.
I enjoy how casual you are about having a TF2 Spy figure. "Yeah if you have the rarest, most expensive figure in the line lying around, you can give him this gun that might not fit."
@dylanlowe8488 "Was it the Commissioner?" "Not exactly. It was someone not unlike the Commissioner, with all the intolerant intones of the commissioner, who sounded remarkably like the Geek, and therefore could very well have been the Geek" -Sam and Max, the thing that could not stop.
"Why would you want to pose them fighting over the phone rather than doing cool action poses?" Because, by and large, Sam and Max fought over the phone a LOT MORE than they did cool action poses with guns. I cannot stress that enough. Most of the time they only even held a gun _in the opening_ and then were almost never seen with one again the entire episode or game. Even when they were actually doing violence, which was typically a melee weapon, explosives, or Sam wielding Max. The fact they included guns and gun holding hands in the figures comes across as a cheeky wink to Sam and Max fans: "Hey, we included their guns so they could always conveniently forget or lose them just like in the series! Also a phone for phone answering privelege battle scenes! We know which one you're more likely to use!"
right? these are action figure collectibles for *sam & max fans*. it’s a weird complaint to have and i’ve never been a gatekeeper or a “clearly you’re not a real fan” type of person, but it does just feel like a complaint someone who is more of an action figure collector and less of a fan of steve purcell and sam & max would have. i don’t WANT them doing cool action poses, but i’d LOVE to have them fighting over the phone
Making a video about the Sam & Max figures to feed a currently starving community is like a Christmas Miracle. - Signed, Local Sam & Max Community Ambassador
at a glance Max is smaller and cuiter and is preserved to be the mascot of the IP, so people who don't care and just want to resell the figures bought him instead of Sam think Pikachu & Ash Ketchum
Companies doing a 2.0 of their figures isn't uncommon in this sort of field, so I'd say if they do well enough and manage to learn from their mistakes long enough to survive as a brand, it's entirely possible.
that makes sense, as someone who dabbles in lps customization. I just pour a hot cup of water and dunk them in head first and boom, just pull the head off. I'd imagine it helping with max's heads and putting them on.
the rat is from the games; they're "neighbours" to a bunch of gangster rats in the telltale games, which max brutalizes (as usual) and in hit the road there's the wack-a-rat carnival game, where sam can bash max in the head as a treat the phone fighting is also very prominent as a reocurring gag in the games as well, so it's not as out-of-nowhere as if it was JUSt from the cartoon; it's a franchise staple and the hammer... uh... there's that bit in the first episode where max smashes cockroaches with it? The max paper puppet is also on their office's cork board in the telltale games
Goooootcha, that helps clear that up, thank you! The rat definitely seems like a much more reasonable accessory with that in mind. And that's cool about the puppet, glad to know it's made its way into every medium!
The Max Puppet was more prominent in the Nelvana cartoon, as it’s used by Sam in various episodes. the first two Telltale games, made the Max puppet show up in Sam & Max’s board, because it was a tongue & cheek reference.
I got my daughter into the cartoon and then I discovered how rare Max is. Such a bummer. The articulation is weird given how Boss Fight got their start.
When I ordered mine from boss fight when they first released I remember getting that “heat up before use letter” with my figures. So I think that the letter was sent out during the initial release.
@Da_ComputerMonster I generally dont really like NECAs valve figures. Theyre super stiff and the paint job on the spy i own is super sloppy. Their Atlas might aswell be a statue with how stiff it is.
7:41 it is in fact, a game reference. Max catches a rat and then threatens it by hanging it out of a window and also is just- very violent with it, it was funny, my explanation doesn’t do it justice
the snapping knees reminds me of the exact same issue the NECA Team Fortress 2 RED Soldier has when kept mint sealed for a long time, as well as my RED Pyro's head swivel. Because heating and lubricating joints is the norm for almost anything NECA, I dipped red soldier's legs in very hot water for around 30 seconds before doing anything with them. Ironically, my copy did not have stuck knees at all, in fact they were relatively loose, the ab crunch was completely stuck though and was freed via the hot water method. Added a tiny bit of silicone grease to both Soldier's ab crunch and Pyro's neck swivel and they're fine. I recommend heating and having some extra silicone oil on hand whenever I have figures from any company these days, its good practice especially when you start having a lot of figures.
I know you already conceded on this, but it was a CRAZY move to be like "Who would want to display them fighting over the phone?" while at the same time showing the most awesome display work I've ever seen in my entire life at 8:22. It's like your own talent betrayed you
OH MY GOD, I got both Sam & Max figures when they first released online and I never took them out of the packaging. Had literally zero idea of Sam's janky leg, thank you for the heads up years on.
Honestly the whole thing with Sam’s knees also happened to me when I first got my figures back in December 2020, and I did order them directly from boss fight studio, luckily they had an amazing customer support, I sent an email regarding my issue back then, with a photo and all, and they sent me replacement parts for Sam, that actually somehow feel higher quality than the ones on release, and about that letter, it was definitely not a sample thing, because I remember getting that letter too, it even had a printed picture of Max lunging forward, and it did warn you about tight joints, so in retrospect i kinda felt dumb for not following the letter and going caveman on Sam, especially since it was a cold winter morning, which probably didn’t help matters much, but overall, awesome review man
next to the blurr is the Lego tahu that you can build from the 90 years of play lego playset and on the opposite side of the shelf is Death's Head, a character well known for his marvel comics stories but who got his start in the original marvel transformers comics. Lockdown from Animated was created to be a version of Death's Head they actually could keep as their own since shenanigans left Death's Head to Marvel (hence why lockdown has a replaceable hand and why his ship is named the Death's Head lol).
Got both of these figures - Sam when he was till available from the small window a few months ago, Max, unfortunately, second hand from Mercari. I absolutely love Sam & Max with all my heart, so if you do as well and find these figures somehow, somewhere - just be ungodly careful. I was scared as all hell switching Max's heads, that shit required Herculean strength without hairdryer or hot water.
I missed out on these two figures and I’m glad I didn’t miss much. Hopefully BFS gets the chance to revise them in the future because some of there recent stuff like the “Fraggle Rock” line show that they can make a pretty good action figure!
2:27 neuron activation there with transformers there I was here expecting for my niche hyperfixation and didn't expect one of my biggest fixations to be mentioned here
Finding these second hand online is definitely a hassle. I got Sam on his own first and waited for a Max to show up, eventually one did, with Sam no less and decided to bite the bullet and get another Sam just to get Max. Thankfully I had no issues with the first Sam I got (Because I knew from online reviews to heat up the joints first.) Though changing out Max's head was a bit tough but I did manage to change it. The second Sam is still in the box.
I will say about the whole heating up the joints thing, that's just a indie toy thing Neca, Super7 and more tell their customers to heat up the joints as these indie toy groups don't have the fund to heat their figures up like the big wigs like hasbro and Mattle
I have those exact figures! And the exact thing happened to my Sam figure! I'm just happy I was able to replace him, he's my favorite character out of the duo.
bro the phone is the most popular running gag of the series and this is a comedy series the phone is a must, the rat i think is most because of how common their are as background stuff. what im surprice is how much faithfull their are to their original comic stuff i was especting seen ssomething of the tell tale games since thats the way most people know about them now a days.
I really hope those Hellboy figures are good in the QC department. Especially since it’s 60 bucks for the base figure and an extra 20 bucks for bonus accessories that should’ve been included.
13:20 doing 3dprinted joints myself, seeing that plastic squeaking while shaking hands made it looks pretty strong to me, I'll tell you that this is rarely the manufacture's QC issue, rather a design issue. toughness and softness of the plastics and how the joints were designed with certain tolerance for playability-loose-tight is all in the choice and experience of the designer-sculptor-planner to do it; price says nothing when often without anyone experienced to tell you how to design those things to work well, so 'You're lucky if you have a barely articulated action figure that even shipped to shelves and your hands' could simply be the case. with modern nendoroids also showing similar note of this using heat thing, I'd expect that we might have to learn to safely disassembly and manually QC-adjust the tightness, more so if the figure gets older and stickier over time
As someone who will likely never own these figures, the way you posed them was such a treat to see that I don’t even feel like I have to! Very high quality videos too, I would have thought this would have a lot more views just from the look of it
As someone who bought the first wave of these from boss fight studios directly, I can confirm that the letter in the video was the same one that arrived with my order. I recently threw it away too! If I knew they were so hard to come by I would've held onto it for longer :( Amazing review though!
oh well now I am double mad! Firstly, at the fact that I didn't know this and the universe didn't know me well enough to Make Me Know About It until now And Secondly, because now I really want them...
silicone shock oil or dish soap should loosen the knee joints on sam and make them less likely to break. you should also only apply heat if the joint is stuck, doing so on a tight joint won't really help and may actually make it easier to shear off if heated up too much
Your love and passion for both figures in general and the characters they represent is so fun to see, and your music choice, camera work, humor, and fun posing is both amusing and soothing. I'll admit, this sort of stuff is completely out of my niche, but you still definitely deserve my thumbs up as well more subscribers! I hope your hard work pays off here, especially with how much you spent on Max... Which, I'll say that Max's Severed Head is a pretty iconic and expensive item in TF2, so there might be a correlation there? Or it could just be a funny coincidence.
These truly do look like some phenomenal figures, and I'd love to own them someday, even if just for the novelty of having officially-licensed Sam & Max figures. Shame about the breakage issues, though.
I missed out on the Sam and Max figures, so I jumped on their Garfield preorder when I saw it... and I've been waiting for it to releasd for two years now.
Boss Fight is good but you gotta be really careful on the joints. I had multiple of their advent calendars and one of the arms on the zombie figure always snaps.
I really like the accesories that come with max (much more than the max puppet that comes with sam tbh) maybe they are "just thrown in there" but i think they are neat. Too bad these dont seem worth it otherwise :(
Sweet figures, Boss Fight Studios has made so many jumps in their quality in the past 5 years that I hope they do a wave two to update them especially with the better articulation scheme they have for smaller figures like their Garfield figures. Let that little rabbit bomb congress 😂.
The entire show is actually available here on RUclips, and the complete comic (the Surfin' the Highway collection), is available on internet archive! Neither are available officially at the moment, unfortunately, but I hope that helps! Have fun diving into the series, it's a genuine blast!
I had a very similar experience to you when these were released. Which is to say, I thought they were very cool, but I wasn’t sure if I wanted to drop the money. And at this point, I’ve forgotten about them. So I’m glad I stumbled across this video so I know what to expect if I do pick them up, darn shame about Sam. I have picked up the plushies! And I think they’re both pretty good, especially Sam! An incredible amount of detail on that plush. Max plushs mouth is a little bad, but otherwise they’re pretty good.
Truth be told, I was just miffed that it was only there as an opportunity to charge a higher price when I personally would've been happier with a lower price that just includes the "essentials". Cool? Cool.
Didn't expect to see an update on that point specifically but love to see it
they could have sold it on the sams set, since he is the one answering most of the time, and with max, just give him more guns, or a separate piece that represents when he was killed by a death laser and his ears were the only thing left
Selling Sam and Max separately feels wrong.
Should’ve been a two-pack
Blatant attempt to charge you more. Even Bob and Doug McKenzie were sold separately!!!
"It wouldn't be romantic without max"
It's like choosing a parent in a divorce
So like.. Sam and Max fighting over the phone seems like a much better display then some action pose.
Literally, thank you.
16:47 that is NOT what sam looks like underneath this is hunk erasure
they exchanged his morbid obesity with brittle kneed
hes supposed to be fat :(
honestly, rats are such a thing with Sam and Max because Steve Purcell likes drawing rats. It's not so much a game thing, it's just because it's Steve Purcell related.
Honestly same
Well there's Jimmy two teeth who lives in the office in the first two telltale seasons.
Though the rat figure doesn't have a hat so it could be his son who swears a lot.
So what you do is you print out a giant speech bubble of "you crack me up little buddy", and have Max running off with the leg of the first Sam
I enjoy how casual you are about having a TF2 Spy figure. "Yeah if you have the rarest, most expensive figure in the line lying around, you can give him this gun that might not fit."
Well, the phone is iconic...
8:25, counterpoint, i'd totally display them like that because it's one of the funniest running gags to come out of sam and max
The phone also doubles as The Commissioner.
Oh my god you're RIGHT
Or the geek
@dylanlowe8488 "Was it the Commissioner?" "Not exactly. It was someone not unlike the Commissioner, with all the intolerant intones of the commissioner, who sounded remarkably like the Geek, and therefore could very well have been the Geek" -Sam and Max, the thing that could not stop.
@noinfo4789 "You have a long, black hair growing right out of your nose!" - Max, the thing that could not stop
"Why would you want to pose them fighting over the phone rather than doing cool action poses?"
Because, by and large, Sam and Max fought over the phone a LOT MORE than they did cool action poses with guns. I cannot stress that enough. Most of the time they only even held a gun _in the opening_ and then were almost never seen with one again the entire episode or game.
Even when they were actually doing violence, which was typically a melee weapon, explosives, or Sam wielding Max.
The fact they included guns and gun holding hands in the figures comes across as a cheeky wink to Sam and Max fans:
"Hey, we included their guns so they could always conveniently forget or lose them just like in the series! Also a phone for phone answering privelege battle scenes! We know which one you're more likely to use!"

if i was a sam and max fan i'd rather have a pose of them doing the unique sam and max thing than a generic gun pose
They weild guns not infrequently in the comic.
@Donovan-u8p This is true, but quite a lot more people are fans of Sam and Max from the show and games, and many of them aren't aware there's a comic.
Finally, Max's Severed Head from TF2 gets his own figure
"I will make hat from you little bunny." - Heavy TF2
I lost my severed head at poker
Making a video about the Sam & Max figures to feed a currently starving community is like a Christmas Miracle.

It's true 😔
at a glance Max is smaller and cuiter and is preserved to be the mascot of the IP, so people who don't care and just want to resell the figures bought him instead of Sam
think Pikachu & Ash Ketchum
I really hope that Boss Fight Studios could revisit these guys after all they've experienced in the industry
Companies doing a 2.0 of their figures isn't uncommon in this sort of field, so I'd say if they do well enough and manage to learn from their mistakes long enough to survive as a brand, it's entirely possible.
Hot water is better for froze up joints because water gets deeper then hair dryer heat
I also think it's because water helps lubricate the joints as well
@xavierjuno4572it heats more evenly
that makes sense, as someone who dabbles in lps customization. I just pour a hot cup of water and dunk them in head first and boom, just pull the head off. I'd imagine it helping with max's heads and putting them on.
I would’ve kept the telephone, but I would’ve swapped the hammer with one of the Devil’s toybox’s psychic playthings, from the last Sam & Max game.
23:04 THE LEG😭😭😭
actual quality figure reviewers are so rare on this website lol, you've earned yourself a sub.
Thank you so much, I really appreciate it!
Bruh,
I WISH Max was more widely available.
There is him in his Scuba Gear, but I want the OG.
the rat is from the games;
they're "neighbours" to a bunch of gangster rats in the telltale games, which max brutalizes (as usual)
and in hit the road there's the wack-a-rat carnival game, where sam can bash max in the head as a treat
the phone fighting is also very prominent as a reocurring gag in the games as well, so it's not as out-of-nowhere as if it was JUSt from the cartoon; it's a franchise staple
and the hammer... uh...
there's that bit in the first episode where max smashes cockroaches with it?
The max paper puppet is also on their office's cork board in the telltale games
Goooootcha, that helps clear that up, thank you! The rat definitely seems like a much more reasonable accessory with that in mind. And that's cool about the puppet, glad to know it's made its way into every medium!
Isn't the rat thing just a hyper fixation Steve has? he REALLY loves drawing them.
The Max Puppet was more prominent in the Nelvana cartoon, as it’s used by Sam in various episodes. the first two Telltale games, made the Max puppet show up in Sam & Max’s board, because it was a tongue & cheek reference.
well obviously Sam has doggy arthritis in his knees and they just wanted to make it character accurate
Looking at them posed fighting over the phone on my shelf right now…💔
glad to see everyone in the comments defending the phone. So real!! I love seeing them posed fighting over the phone, it's so iconic
2:26 except for the shit-eating grin of Starscream on some figures lol
I love that douchebag so much
Him being the only exception is so in character 😭
I got my daughter into the cartoon and then I discovered how rare Max is. Such a bummer. The articulation is weird given how Boss Fight got their start.
These designs feels more towards the adventure 3d animated style telltale games they did years ago
When I ordered mine from boss fight when they first released I remember getting that “heat up before use letter” with my figures. So I think that the letter was sent out during the initial release.
The weapons won't fit the NECA TF2 figures, Engie and Scout cant hold their own pistols, while Spy's hads are too small
Seriously wish valve did a rerun with the license.
@redironproductions5579 Heck, I want someone else to do TF2 figures, (Like Jada), cause I generally DON'T like how brittle NECA's plastic is
Dang, to be expected but still a tiny bit of a bummer.
I have all of the NECA figures besides Spy, Engineer and Scout can actually hold their pistols if you heat up the hands.
@Da_ComputerMonster I generally dont really like NECAs valve figures. Theyre super stiff and the paint job on the spy i own is super sloppy. Their Atlas might aswell be a statue with how stiff it is.
I have these and they look perfect in a Bratz Cadillac!
Oh MAN that would rule, if I was any better at customizing I'd absolutely cave and pick one up!
7:41 it is in fact, a game reference. Max catches a rat and then threatens it by hanging it out of a window and also is just- very violent with it, it was funny, my explanation doesn’t do it justice
We thought there was also a scene from the cartoon where Max tried to hammer a rar
And the same rat shows up multiple times in each game
Jimmy two teeth my boy :)
the snapping knees reminds me of the exact same issue the NECA Team Fortress 2 RED Soldier has when kept mint sealed for a long time, as well as my RED Pyro's head swivel. Because heating and lubricating joints is the norm for almost anything NECA, I dipped red soldier's legs in very hot water for around 30 seconds before doing anything with them. 8:22 Imma be so honest, you posing them like this boosted my interest in getting these figures so hard
For real, he made the opposite point he intended for actual Sam & Max fans
16:53
I love this reoccurring gag.
9:56 is this a reference to the first sam and max comics? like the rough first sketches
The stupid little Lego pohatu and tfa blurr camio was cute
I know you already conceded on this, but it was a CRAZY move to be like "Who would want to display them fighting over the phone?" while at the same time showing the most awesome display work I've ever seen in my entire life at 8:22. It's like your own talent betrayed you

Interesting, I wonder if the letter was just something Boss Fight sent out with orders directly from their website, then! Thanks for clarifying that!
3:39 Family Guy death pose
That really sucks, right out of the box too.
the rat is probably jimmy two-teeth
Watching this for Sam & Max only to gradually realize you're a BIONICLE fan from all the references
the words: swivel, transformers, and bigbadtoystore, gives me images of a certain youtuber
(swivel man no uta starts playing in the distance)
0:16 that has to be an animated Blurr right next to Sam and Max. Also cute bionicle on the other shelves
next to the blurr is the Lego tahu that you can build from the 90 years of play lego playset and on the opposite side of the shelf is Death's Head, a character well known for his marvel comics stories but who got his start in the original marvel transformers comics. That leg QC reminds me of the 50th anniversary Mego Joker i just got, and his arm immediately broke.
7:18 dude youll LOVE THEM if you ever pick them up theyre so full of soul and love
2:27 neuron activation there with transformers there I was here expecting for my niche hyperfixation and didn't expect one of my biggest fixations to be mentioned here
12:40 yeah I bought max when the figures first dropped, he’s holding up well but I never received a warning note like that with him
freelance police!
Finding these second hand online is definitely a hassle. I got Sam on his own first and waited for a Max to show up, eventually one did, with Sam no less and decided to bite the bullet and get another Sam just to get Max. Fair point, but saying neca is indie is silly
@greengald6252well their joints are notoriously stiff so not surprised they tell people to heat up their figures
I wish tf2 could've gotten better articulated figures and accessories
I have those exact figures! And the exact thing happened to my Sam figure! I'm just happy I was able to replace him, he's my favorite character out of the duo.

6:51 his roach crusher hammer

I recently threw it away too! If I knew they were so hard to come by I would've held onto it for longer :(
Amazing review though!
3:39 You get a like from me for this visual gag alone
Imagine silent library with transformers
oh well now I am double mad!
Firstly, at the fact that I didn't know this and the universe didn't know me well enough to Make Me Know About It until now
And Secondly, because now I really want them...
silicone shock oil or dish soap should loosen the knee joints on sam and make them less likely to break. you should also only apply heat if the joint is stuck, doing so on a tight joint won't really help and may actually make it easier to shear off if heated up too much
play the games blud im begging you you're putting tarnish upon my name
The reason Max sold way more than Sam is because of Poker Night at the Inventory. That game is iconic
I think it's funny since I've only played the games and never read the comics or watched the show 😭 I didn't even know they had a show!
Idk if I’m late but i would look into shock oil for tight joints
Your love and passion for both figures in general and the characters they represent is so fun to see, and your music choice, camera work, humor, and fun posing is both amusing and soothing. I'll admit, this sort of stuff is completely out of my niche, but you still definitely deserve my thumbs up as well more subscribers! I hope your hard work pays off here, especially with how much you spent on Max... Which, I'll say that Max's Severed Head is a pretty iconic and expensive item in TF2, so there might be a correlation there? Or it could just be a funny coincidence.
A Bionicle Size comparison, on an Action Figure review?... In this ECONOMY?!
Listen I'm ride or die for Bionicle, I'm gonna be sneaking it into videos for as long as I'm doing this!
Where did you preorder the Garfield figures?
thanks for the review, was on the fence for these toys. Now only if I could find them selling
Has Robot Chicken done a Sam & Max skit yet?
Surprisingly..NO???
@BxllsZxch Really? seems like something that'd be right up their alley
Boss Fight is good but you gotta be really careful on the joints. I had multiple of their advent calendars and one of the arms on the zombie figure always snaps.
I guess I was lucky to not have mine break. can't remember if I needed to heat sam or not. but now I'm paranoid to ever touch em again, lol.
Put a metal rod into the peg and the other joint, that'll fix it!
Damn, now I'm worried about my overpriced Hellboy and Conan preorders.
I!! LOVE!!! TOYS!!!!
My fav yearly RUclipsr
I’ve only played the vr game but it is so cool!
This is going into some fangirl's jar I know it in my heart.
Has to be money laundering
Where'd you get to read the comics and watch the shows? I've been meaning to get into them after falling in love with the games.
The entire show is actually available here on RUclips, and the complete comic (the Surfin' the Highway collection), is available on internet archive! Neither are available officially at the moment, unfortunately, but I hope that helps! Have fun diving into the series, it's a genuine blast!
this was a really good review!!!
HE'S BACK
I like this guy, I'm subscribing! : )
giving me jobbie the hong vibes
I really enjoyed this video. I hope this channel gets the subs it deserves. Subbed.
0:17 transformers animated blurr yay
I had the Lucasarts PC adventure game when it came out and even the CD-ROM with voices at that. They are cool
Earned yourself a sub. Great review! I’d love to see you tackle some premium DNA figures sometime.
I love the way you edit your action figure reviews! Keep up the good work 👍
Thank you, that's really kind of you to say!
I don't see your issue with the phone
