That's because there is no hard historical proof he ever existed. Same with Jesus we have no historical evidence he ever existed. And please do not mention the bible as a history book (walk on water and folks living to be 900 years old.) Budda lived so long ago we just cannot prove it. If we move up to the 7th century and Mohammad we can prove he existed in the historical record. Class over...

Yeah, good point about how controversial these can be. I mean, who's more famous from America, Elvis or Michael Jackson? Some might say neither and pick Michael Jordan or something, because they're a sports fan. But apparently it's Ben Franklin? I would have picked Lincoln or Washington before Franklin, though his inventions and contributions to science and literature can't bve overstated. I would have guessed Bono for Ireland. Iraq is ancient but its history is incredibly turbulent and it's been through tons of change for a long time now. It's pretty complicated. I agree 100% with you on Mugabe. Until the war, I would have said the most famous Ukrainian was Vitali Klitschko. I would say Cleopatra for Egypt, not Nefertiti. Or perhaps King Tut. Cleopatra was born in Alexandria, Egypt.

Most of the Middle Eastern countries are not that old. They are the result of the British and American governments splitting up the defeated Ottoman Empire after World War 1. Iraq as common people and culture is thousands of years old, but as a country, it’s about 100 years old. The lines were redrawn after World War 2 for many Middle Eastern countries as well as the type of government they currently are changed over the years too.
The same somewhat goes for Alexander the Great. There was no Greece as a country. It was a region with a common people, culture, and language. In reality, Alexander the Great was from the city state of Macedon, which had a separate governance from Athens, Crete, Sparta, etc.

Jokic is not more famous than Tesla, except to some who watch the nba. But if you insist on a modern Serb, Djokovic is also more famous than Jokic. Tennis is not only watched more than basketball worldwide, but Djokovic is arguably the GOAT (whereas Jokic, while great, ain't close), and has been around professionally almost twice as long as Jokic (or almost three times if only focusing on Jokic's nba career).

Interesting video but obviously a lot of the choices are highly debatable. Some countries have a lot of famous people to choose from.

Sucks that the video did UK instead of each individual country. A copout!

Benjamin Franklin!! No stinkin' way. Ole Abe is much more likely, but I'd think someone from popular culture would be likely. Michael Jackson, maybe. I even considered Elvis. He gets overlooked a bit but I think he's still recognizable. I'm probably inclined toward Elvis because my sister is a huge fan and one of the great regrets of her life is that she never got to see him live. All the kids in our family learn who Elvis is very quickly, so knowing that 2 and 3 year olds know who he is but wouldn't have a clue about Michael Jackson definitely sways me.
Mother Theresa and Ghandi are interesting in that knowing she worked so long in Calcutta, I bet many people would associate her with India and give Ghandi a run for the money. :)
