The aircraft "broke up" due to overstressing the airframe causing catastrophic structural failure.

    Sounds like a midair explosion!

If the plane broke up into pieces...was there a bomb on board? Was NTSB called in to investigate?

NTSB investigates any plane crash involving a death. Aircraft have a 'Never Exceed' velocity, which is the speed at which the plane can become uncontrollable and even break apart in the air. This particular model of plane has a history of this, because the plane is so aerodynamically 'clean' that it is easy for the plane to reach its 'Never Exceed' velocity in a relatively shallow dive. The main question for the NTSB is why this plane ended up in a dive - mechanical failure, weather issue, or pilot error.

Beechcraft still makes the Bonanza, just not the V-tail version of the Bonanza.
