- B Smith is a famous model, restaurant owner and television show host. She has been married to her husband Dan Gasby for over 20 years. B Smith was diagnosed with Alzheimer's back in 2013 and since developing the disease, her husband has since got a life partner and stated that B Smith would've wanted this. She is not very coherent but she is around his girlfriend Alex and many are very upset at her husband Dan for not holding true to his wedding vows.

Preston Hamilton, your thoughts are so on point. I cared for my father who suffered with this disease until he passed away. You’re right, there’s no way to know exactly what she comprehends. My father had many of what I called, “moments of clarity.” Which is what kept me going as a caregiver. The way he speaks....I don’t know. Yes this disease is absolutely hard and draining, but I just don’t trust him with Ms. Smith. Apart from disrespecting his wife to the moon and back....its obvious that he should simply allow others to care for her....his heart is no longer there.
Is there anything that can be done to report this? Can anyone step in legally and ensure her estate don't go to him???? If she has kids, where are they?

I understand the effect her illness has on him, that is the nature of life, she should have his loyalty. He can have a separate life without such disregard and betrayal. I think the right thing to do is respect the patient’s history and relationships by preserving their life style as much as possible.

This is absolutely awful. I have walked in his shoes I walked in his shoes as a caregiver for an Alzheimer’s husband for nine years. I never dated and I would not even think of bringing another man into my husbands home where he has worked so hard to give to his family that is so disrespectful. If he wanted to have a partner or a lover he could’ve done that outside his home not bring her in to the home in her face. She says she’s helping take care of her but they will reach a time when B will not be able to take care of her self her hygiene she will forget how to walk she will be bedbound is this lady going to clean her behind and that will come that time will come. He has enough finances to hire a full-time round the clock 24 seven nursing care I had some help a CNA came in six hours a day seven days a week so I know he can get help. She is pretending to help him take care of his wife that is a lie this woman is an opportunist she is going to live the two of them going to live off ofBs money while pretending to take care of her we don’t know what you’re putting in her food. But tell him to come back and show us what they’re doing when B can no longer walk when she can no longer take herself to the bathroom when she can no longer talk when who will be taking care of her and how will they be taking care of her then.The marriage says till death do us part not just for a cold or the flu, but for all illnesses and we do not understand that one day and illness will come down on us that’s not just so simple as a cold and you will need to handle it just like you would a cold...till death do you part. Not bring another woman in your house and I’m quite sure they are sleeping in the master bedroom and B is probably in some other room in the house that they are setting up for a sick person with a hospital bed because that time will come. First let me say, this is truly the most horrible disease. It really is. I don't understand how we can't find a cure or at least a way to slow it way down. I bet if the US government cared more about it's citizens, it would stop spending billions on the military or unnecessary walls and put it into medical research!
Secondly my grandmother died of Alzheimers, it was a sad, slow, miserable death. My grandfather however adored her as he always had. He was determined to take care of her, which he did until he developed a hernia from lifting her. He finally agreed to put her into a nursing home, but he drove across town twice a day everyday to be with her and make sure she was eating. He visited other patients at the nursing home, patients that didn't often get visitors and it made their day. He was 91 when she died and I saw him cry for the first time of my life the day she was laid to rest. He was so strong, but empty in a way without her and the nursing home patients to visit. He still went to visit often, but it was painful for him going there without her there. He died almost two years to the day, after her death. In great health and still driving, but he fell over dead of a heart attack. Although I am still grieving, I am so thankful to him for showing me what true love is!

I'm sure that being caretaker to a person..parent, spouse. Etc isn't easy. It likely takes both a physical, emotional and mental toll in the care taker.. as well as the person living with the disease. Its very debilitating.. With that being said if he feels overwhelmed to the point of feeling totally drained and miserable he needs to consider other options. Many people dislike nursing homes but they do serve a purpose. He needs to find a great facility and place her in one if he can't deal with caring for her himself. He can visit regularly and make sure that she is receiving good care. I feel that doing that would be more dignified than what he's doing now. Its not acceptable to bring another woman into the home that you share with your wife. Her having Alzheimer's doesn't make it acceptable. She's alive whether she knows who you are or not. You know who she is. She's the woman you promised to love and stand by in sickness and in health..good times and bad times..until death do you part...People don't take marital vows as seriously as they used to...The love comes with stipulations and conditions .The fact that he's too self absorbed and wrapped up in his own wants and needs that he'd think that this is OK is sad. I'm not even going to get into race..If the mistress were black the situation still wouldnt be right. I get that he has needs as a man that his wife can no longer fulfill but this isn't acceptable. Could he not have remained discreet at the very least until B Smith passes? I can definitely relate to his story. Before my mother passed away two years ago from Alzheimer’s I was her caregiver also for six years, and I had to go through the same problems with family and friends just like how the people and media are dealing with him. I think before people go judging and chastising Dan, we need to be more understanding and supportive because taking care of someone with Alzheimer’s isn’t easy. You definitely need your sanity. People are not looking at how he is still taking really good care of his wife despite everything( violent, spitting, fighting, always running away, saying mean things, this sad world today, and etc...). As far as a reality show, yes he don’t have to put their business out there, but I’m glad, and will be definitely watching. Understand just like their book “Remember Me” made me feel like I wasn’t alone. So this show can definitely touch souls and hearts that have or even is still going through it as a caregiver. This is a disease that I think people are really taking for granted, and not realizing this is bigger than Aids. Dan Gasby is B Smith's rock and she needs all the support she can get. B Smith is an iconic, dignified, lovely woman and her husband has his attributes as well. All of these people are all about themselves.
It disgusts me when I see and hear about families shunning family members because of a dementia or Alzheimer's diagnosis because THEY can't deal. Excuse me but think of that person and how they must feel. Trapped in their own body with no control over their own thoughts and actions. That's terrifying. I remember caring for a 102 year old woman with severe dementia, you could barely hold up a conversation with her but shes the sweetest most kind and gentle woman but shes so misunderstood because when she has her moments she will take things or touch people (appropriately) without permission. She doesnt mean do and most times they just need redirection that's all. I remember if I would separate her from the other residents and just sit alone with her we would sing together and she would quickly calm down and just be swinging her legs in her chair and singing. It breaks my heart when theres people who just cant wrap their heads around it and only look from their own perspective. I remember a family member telling me to lie to her mother about Christmas because they weren't going to come and bring her to their family dinner. That shit just breaks my heart, because what if it was you ? And someday it very well could be.

They make excuses like "Oh, she's having a bad day," or "We're getting ready to go to a doctor appointment." I've seen this happen before. They make family and friends feel guility for wanting to be involved and assured that the sick partner isn't being harmed. It's very sad, and sometimes family and friends never get to see the sick parner alive again.

The courts will not intervene, as she looks to be healthy, working out and walking about. They won't take in consideration the humiliation he's putting her through. Ok, so this story is just so bizzaro, I went & did some research.
First, he’s very successful in his life, so he’s not just living off her money. “ he’s the nation's richest African-American. He is also the first self-made Wall Street billionaire who isn't a white male. A former Goldman Sachs investment banker, Smith started his private equity firm Vista in 2000.” So, whether he had married B. Smith or not, he is extremely wealthy on his own. When they married in 1992, he was a very wealthy investment banker then.
Second, B.Smith got this horrible disease back in 2013. In 2014, she was lost for over 24 hours. She no longer knows anything. She doesn’t know friends, relatives, her husband, which day, month or year it is. That’s what this disease does. No doubt it’s been like this since 2014, when she was lost & knew nothing.
Third, I think the past six years of her husband taking care of her, has no doubt broken his spirit, & he too became a victim of this disease since he had the full responsibility 24/7, & she didn’t even know him.
No doubt after all that time, he needed to finally think of his life now, with basically no one there for him. It was a no win situation for either of them.
And finally, he made the huge mistake of trying to still take care of his wife, while bringing another woman into his home. He should have either got a full time caretaker for B & moved out. Or had B put into the best care facility for ppl with Alzheimers. Probably being in the care facility would have been the best choice.
What ppl do not understand, is this disease takes everything, you are left as a “ shell” of a person. No memory, no knowing of any simple thing. Eventually you cannot even bathe yourself, feed yourself, nothing. So this is what he’s dealing with.
I don’t think he’s a monster, I do think he probably had a breakdown from all the stress, & actually losing his wife as he knew her, years ago. As far as Alex goes, she too has her own money, & is very successful. This is not about money, nor what color the girlfriend is, this is about loneliness , & this mans needs as a healthy, living man.
He handled this the wrong way. Alex seems to be trying to help take care of B, but it’s really not appropriate for her to be put into this position. It’s really about him making a lot of bad decisions, although I’m sure he feels that everyone is now being taken care of. But, yes it certainly is a very bizarre situation.

B. Smith is a proud woman. I went to dine in her now defunct restaurant, B. Smith's several times and you could tell by the decor and customer service that there is a lot of pride in that woman.
