    I once hitched a ride with an empty rig on the main route E of OKC sometime/somewhere late 1960's (my buddy's stovebolt Chevy had
    blown-up after cave exploring near Jay OK ). Early AM the hiway vacant our host wound up that V-12 in 15th gear after switching-on a huge overhead light that seemed to reach-out a couple miles. We touched 100 MPH several times! The sound of that mighty 2-stroke clings to my memory at age 83.

    Those 12V71s had some pretty awesome torque! I've got some old footage of a '70 Brockway with the 12V71. I'll find it and post it. Thanks for this.

    Nothing sounds like a Detroit Diesel lad! Just like the US v8 motors. Affordable, reliable, and full of fun and WOW!
    Nice rig!
    Cheers from the heartland

    Whether 6V,..8V,..or 12V,..I like the sound of those old Detroit two strokes! Even a 6-71 engine sounds good! And,..I'm a Freightliner fan,too!

    Man, the old 12v's were great! I remember my first truck I ever leaned to drive was a 65 Freightshaker COE with a 12v in it and an 18 speed and I jumped a gear once comin up over a hill loaded and twisted the frame! lol that really sucked

    I drove a 77 Astro 95 with a nicely tuned 12v71n, set at 467 hp. I can assure you NO 400 Cummins ever presented a problem uphill or down! When the going got tough all she did was make a little more noise, never slowed down.

    yup, used to pull 47,000 out of Billerica, MA back to Jersey and just let it coast to bottom of hills on 90 and 84 then step down and you could feel motor twisting truck it was pulling so hard going uphill. 1693 was the original four and a quarter and was a bulldozer engine in a truck. Expensive to repair back then as Cat only had off highway support and was told you are paying for the four foot thick concrete floors in shop. 1693 was the brute and V-12 was the sweetheart.

  • @chuckrl
    @chuckrl 14 лет назад +1

    @MattytheDem - Yup, both heads are off of a straight 6-71 on a single cast V-12-71 block.
    I put a lot of miles on a White Freightliner like that one plus just the plain Freightliner COE's that they made after dropping White trucks to sell them. I love them as I was very comfortable for me to drive. One of the best COE's that I ever drove. 95% of my driving was in COE's until I retired with a conventional Pete that I hated.

    Sounds like one bank of Jakes are half stuck on, a 12V71 should purr this one sounds like it's got lungs full of gravel at low revs. It does sound sweeter at flight revs.

  • @speedskiff2
    @speedskiff2 15 лет назад

    had a 1693 turned to a 440 and used turnbuckles and chains on motor to frame as it would pull bolts out of bellhousing to motor mounts from torque. That and twist round axle housings in mounts peterbilt used to have. 12v71NA I also ran would pull snowshoe in PA @ 52MPH with 46,000 and just change tune in pipes. Today's generation of drivers don't know what they missed.

    Minddriver is right. Most shift patterns on Semi's aren't all that much different. Hell, an Eaton Fuller 13 speed, if you skip low-low range, is basically shifting a 4 speed, with range splits. Very easy. Some are tough, but others really aren't.

    The way to get the drivers to operate these old Detroits properly was to slam their left hand in the door before they went off on a run. That way they'll drive all pissed off with their foot in the accelerator to keep from lugging the engine. You have to keep Detroit 2 strokes wound tight. Lugging them will kill them.

  • @jaggass
