I have watched this multiple times over the last few months but i just walked through it while i was learning. I started to almost cry because i have been a artist fighting against my gift instead of using it. I would use it for others to avoid using it for myself. This has inspired me to be a full time author and illustrated. Still fighting tears. Happy tears because i know i can blow this up in a good way like i have in a bad way for so long. By the way my other favorite author RUclipsr is also name Bethany Atazadeh. You both have taught me so much so yaayy Bethany's Rock! One thing i believe i noticed from you teaching this so well that the reason why you may have never had an issue with white edges when not formatting bleed in the document is because when Amazon says margins outside with bleed is .375 is actually already accounting for bleed. So when we then add bleed as .125 it gives a double area so you be well within range already either way. So how you teach it with bleed those that dont use bleed still benefits from being away from area making a better visual experience when we can see the full character images. Its so cool to within one video to fully understand something that before i had no clue and was having a hard to even understanding how to make a double spread page in Photoshop so i can just over lay it in InDesign like you. Hope you come back and share more. I will be subbing to self pubby soon as i can, congratulations on all your efforts by the way paying off. God willing i will be next 🥰🙏👍🥳

Thank you so much for this. I’ve used InDesign for years using bleeds, etc. but when I did my first children’s coloring and activity book, I struggled uploading it. Just couldn’t figure out what I was doing wrong. Watched this video and figured it out. It uploaded!!! See, you can teach an old dog new tricks!!!
Great tutorial! Thank you. Please tell me how I can format title and back page. I feel like you touched on it here but I can't seem to find the segment.
I'm glad you enjoyed it! I've been looking through my content and I actually think I don't have a specific video for that! I'm going to be doing an update for this tutorial and including more and I'll absolutely include this. I also show the back page(s) of a book here: ruclips.net/video/gpSHgEyGo4k/видео.html and for the title page, I typically will illustrate the title and drag it in with a frame (as if it is an illustration). But stay tuned because I'll touch on this in an upcoming video soon :)
You are so inspiring! I just Dogg Adobe I design the other day and Adobe illustrator sooo I’m learning Adobe I design as I already know AI. Can’t wait to learn more from you!
I learned how to use InDesign a year ago and had to watch this to refresh my memory. Quick question: Does anyone know the margin and bleed for ingram spark interiors? I'm working on my next children's book and the trim size will be 8.5 x 11 and ingram says to set the margins at 0.5 inches, but I'm not sure if I should add 0.125 inches to the trim size as well
Hey :) Keep in mind that margins aren't additional page space, those are areas within of the 8.5 x 11 space that you will want to keep away from the center crease and the edges (such as text boxes and important illustrations). On InDesign you can set your margins to be that purple square on the interior of the page as a guide to stay within. I hope that helps!

I've spent hours resizing my book. Amazon keeps telling me that the margins are wrong. I started watching this video to see what I'd done wrong. Hi Sammy! I love your comment. I hope I'm not overstepping a boundary, and if so I apologize but this could help others as well as yourself. I would ask you, what is it about being successful with your book that you're refusing to receive? What if your book is a gift to those experiencing what you've experienced. Would you say no to receiving money while resisting being such a huge blessing to the world? Energy requires an exchange, and money is energy. What is it you say to yourself around receiving that you could explore at a deeper level and even potentially let go of? Does it really serve you and in what way? What else is possible? I'd say many people believe in you!

@@sheldy122 I love that Sammy. Now, what if you wouldn’t be gaining off of your grandmother, but rather from the work that you put into the book? Bethany. I am drawing and coloring my illustrations by hand. I really have not mastered the digital pen and I really don't have that time to do that. So I upload my art. My question is. I want to do an 8.5 x 8.5 children's picture book. What size should each hand-painted illustration be? what size should the two-page spread be? Do I do 8.5 for each or the little bigger for bleed? and then upload each illustration separately into InDesign then merge them together for the two-page spread? Also, can I just modify my illustrations for kindle? if so How do I do that? I have noticed many Kindle books are a real mess. The pictures are on one side or bottom or corner and the text is on the next page and no picture and yet they have sold hundreds or even thousands of the book. Do you have a board book publisher? Thanks for your help
Hi, thank you for your helpful video. I have completed the text and images for my first 8.5 x 8.5 book (with bleed). I'm clear on the margin set up after watching your video but have one basic question - is it right that the dimensions of the pages that get imported into the margined template are 8.5 x 8.5 or do the inserted images need to be the 8.75 H x 8.625 W dimension? Thanks very much!
OMG this is such a great tutorial, I would love to buy your template. Can you sell it separate? I don't want to get a subscription, but I am willing to pay for the template.
Patreon can be joined/canceled as you see fit, so even if you only want to join for a month - that's okay but I understand avoiding subscriptions! As an alternative I also have the template included in the formatting class on Self-Pubby that is not subscription based for another option selfpubby.com/courses/create-a-childrens-book-with-adobe-indesign/) Either way I'm glad this tutorial helped! Check out the full InDesign series for more on formatting from start to finish :)
when we add bleed, then After exporting in pdf that bleed section cut off, it doesnot appear, and the page size will be same as 8.5*8.5 , then what is need of bleed here? i think we have to add bleed in size like 8.625*8.75
The bleed space will export in the PDF. When printed, the document is cut within the bleed, making the page 8.5 x 8.5 but eliminating the chance for any white space on the edges due to the larger image.
Hi Bethany! Is this format needed before giving your book to an illustrator ? Also if I were to join Patreon and download the document will it work on my Macbook? Thank you.
Hello! This step would come after illustrations and text. But before you give your book to your illustrator you should have the text stage complete and polished and separated out into what you'd like on each page. The document will work on any machine, as long as the computer has InDesign or Affinity Publisher or software that can open an .INDD or .IDML file.
If they are exporting with a white background, try turning off the background layer (it is usually the first one locked). Otherwise, if it is not exporting with a white background as a .png you may just be seeing the white page of the book behind it (even if there is no background).
Hi Bethany, your videos are very nice. I follow you with great pleasure. You didn't say how many inches the gutter margins are in the video? Should an 8.5x8.5 children's book that requires Bleed have an gutter margins of 0.375? thank you.
At 15:34 I show that the inside/gutter margin should be 0.375" at minumum😊 For KDP, the gutter margins are the inside margins and that section of the video goes over the exact measurements and how to calculate margins with KDP's resources.
