Note that when he "grounded" everything, he only touched one part of the glass to their heads, and since charge can't flow in the glass insulator dielectric, most of it remained. If he had wiped the glass inside and outside with metal that was grounded, it would then be gone. If he replaced the glass with a different one never charged, nothing would be there to discharge.
