    Another interesting shooter on the genesis, including some nice effects for the system.
    I did'nt really get on with the controls so this could certainly have been better played, but I get the job done in the end. I stayed with normal this time, I havent read anything to surgest you need to play hard mode for an extended ending.
    Not a bad game. Just a few minor complaints regarding the extra unit that follows you around, having to climb into it to change special weapon and some enemy still through all they have at you during this process. Recharging power can be troublesome on some levels if there are no recharge pods to pickup. -

    As a kid I asked for the Power Rangers game for Christmas. Opened my gift and this was in it. I was disappointed as hell but didnt want my parents to know because it would have killed them so i faked a smile. Then I played it and the smile wasn't fake any more. I thanked them profusely. Each difficulty changes the time of day you play (less solar power = less special weapon use). It also changes the ending very slightly. Off my head (it's been 23 years).
    The endings are long the higher the difficulty level. The cone thing at the end of normal launches and goes through several tunnels. The longest ending is the camera pans around the cones, it launches on a journey and then lands to a 3d line model of ranger-x suit.

    • @o_o_o_o_o-o_o_o_o_o
      @o_o_o_o_o-o_o_o_o_o 7 лет назад +7

      I just played it on Heavy (via emulator) and yeah there's a 3D Ranger-X at the end. I don't remember the "launches on a journey" part but I wasn't paying close attention to the 3D animation either so it could easily have happened.
      The much bigger difference between this video and what I just experienced is that this player uses very different special weapons--mainly because I never found the giant plasma beam weapon or the bullet-eating wave attack weapon! Those two weapons appear to be enormously useful, and I suspect that I didn't find them because the Heavy difficulty simply removes them. But maybe I just missed them. At any rate, I mostly used the falcon instead; I think that that weapon is a bit overpowered itself. It destroys something like half the enemies you meet, very safely. You can stand right in the searchlights in the city assault stage and recharge your power from them while the falcon obligingly eats up all the guard machines that come at you because you got found (by the light). It's a pretty different way to play from what this video shows.
      Also, the bouncy floating platforms in the skyscraper stage are missing when you play on Heavy. You apparently have to use a duck-to-charge-and-then-jump maneuver to make the longest vertical climb, because on a normal jump you'll get a little less speed at the start and you'll overheat juuust before you reach the next landing spot. It's weirdly obtuse and I had to check GameFAQs to learn about it at all. (The move is similar to the motorcycle helper's normal method of jumping, but there seems to be nothing to suggest to the player that they should try that on foot as well; even when you do it correctly, it doesn't look like it's changing anything.)
      This is a neat game. I like the little touches in it, like how the searchlights recharge you but also trigger enemies, and how the lit-up floors in the skyscraper recharge you extra fast, and how the flying fish things in stage 2 are only easy to fight if you let light itself kill them, and how the bosses all have weirdly different methods of attacking and defending that you can deal with in multiple ways. Although I would change a few things about it, it definitely holds up for somebody only playing it for the first time now, as an adult.

    • @o_o_o_o_o-o_o_o_o_o
      @o_o_o_o_o-o_o_o_o_o 7 лет назад +4

      Oh and the other little thing I liked that this video didn't show is that in the city assault stage, the target machines run on tracks that you can see in the background--and you can actually destroy certain post thingies that hold up pieces of these tracks, changing where the targets are allowed to go! It took me a long while to figure out what those were even supposed to be for; they're easy to miss. But then eventually I managed to wreck one just as a target machine was moving across the section of track that it supported--and when the track disappeared, the enemy machine fell down and immediately exploded! That's some fun attention to detail.

    • @o_o_o_o_o-o_o_o_o_o
      @o_o_o_o_o-o_o_o_o_o 7 лет назад +3

      Actually hmm I think the video does show it after all. At 29:16 or so the player destroys part of a track and then leaves the target behind. Somewhat later, one of the targets dies mysteriously, offscreen. It seems to be that one, which has presumably moved all the way back to that broken piece of track and fallen off it! So then the player never has to return to finish that fight.
      Also at 30:49 the player shoots at a target that's moving away but instead ends up destroying a piece of track, apparently by accident. Shortly after that, the target returns and falls to its doom! Or maybe it just runs out of health from being shot at. It's not clear.
      Interesting game, to have such subtleties in it.

    It just goes to show you that the Sega Genesis was very capable of Mode 7 and FX chip graphics, without these special chips of course. The Genesis had more power to it than what people realize.

    • @Bloodreign1
      @Bloodreign1 2 года назад +3

      It couldn't actually do those things though, it could do scaling to a limited degree, but software in the game carts would have to be the thing doing the hard work (like scaling). Mode 7 was not done by chip, but was done natively by the SNES, along with sprite rotation.
      The wireframe effects were done by the game itself, programming tricks if you will, the Genesis itself would not be quite capable of doing it. And for sure it was done mainly by Japanese developers, and not so much western developers as the Japanese devs understood the hardware it seemed more often that western developers did. The SNES, those same effects could be done by the hardware, it's just that Nintendo built the SNES with expansion in mind, much like Sega did with RAM with the Saturn. People like to think that it's a bad thing, but if you can do things to squeeze even more out of the console you created, you do so. Sega could've done the same thing with their console, but in a panic they were too busy trying to hurry out a CD based console, and the never truly harnassed 32X, and left the Genesis to rot. Sega only used a special chip once, and due to the cost of the chip, never attempted to try it again, instead of maybe coming up with a cheaper alternative that could've squeezed more juice out of the Genesis.

    • @TechnoJon96
      @TechnoJon96 9 лет назад +6

      Highlight/shadow, a feature unique to the Genesis, which gave each color not only its regular shade but also a doubly-bright and a half-bright version. Few artists took advantage of this for some reason. Combine that with a lot of per-scanline background manipulation (and most likely palette manipulation as well) and you can stretch those 64 colors way up into the stratosphere.

One time I found a seller who brought a scrap full of cartridges for the SEGA console and it was rusty.. He didn't know its value.. I bought one from him for less than a quarter of a dollar.. I took it home and wiped it.. The surprise was that it was this legendary game "Ranger-X" that shocked me with its realism and magnificence.. I will never forget those moments as long as I live

    Very impressive for it's time. Some of the indie titles are popping back to similar routes. Uses a different and more current visual style, but not of the norms so much, but I'd recommend you check out a game called "Intrusion II". All made by one guy.

    Wow, this game was realised in ‘93 and technically sh*ts on anything on the SNES (SFX titles excluded) including DKC.

    • @Bloodreign1

      You are reaching pretty far with that statement. It definitely pushes the Genesis to it's limits, but is not a technical marvel compared to what the SNES can do (for the Genesis it is, moreso than Virtua Racing was). Yes the SNES was made in mind to use chips, like the Famicom did, that's called thinking ahead when you create a console, knowing whenever you want, you can push past it's limits. Outside of the wireframe brakdown of the games bosses and targets, the game is your average graphically nice game, which the SNES is also quite capable of. By this point, the MD was 5 years old, the Genesis, 4 years old, and by then, developers knew the in and outs of the console, enough to create a game like this. Sadly IMO games on the Genesis were never this good ever again after.
      People love to give the SNES shit for using chips,but those chips gave that console a much longer lifespan than it should have, pushing the system to last till at least 2000, while at that time, Sega was already a good part into the Dreamcast's short lifespan.

    • @EOTA564
      @EOTA564 3 года назад +1

      @@Bloodreign1 Wouldn’t disagree with too much of that. What makes this game visually amazing is the level of creativity; using visual tricks to eke the most out of the system.

    • @Bloodreign1
      @Bloodreign1 2 года назад

      @@EOTA564 That's right, it takes a talented bunch to make a game get the most of the console it is on, even if special chips are used or not. And not many developers are as capable as the people behind this game for the Genesis. Your best devs for either console are the ones that can push past the limits, and wow the buyer, and still hold up decades later. This is why 16 bit games have lasting appeal, you knew the devs had limited resources, and limited space, so they got very, very creative.

    For a sega game, the mechanics of this game was ahead of its time. Between this, the power rangers movie game, and comix zone, I was one happy kid! Man I always wished they would remake a game like comix zone with current gen for all the comic book artist out there...they never did tho 😞

    I didn't get this game until relatively recently. I found it in a bargain bin for $3.99. It took some getting used to the odd controls but it's a really fun game once you figure it out.I don't have a 6 button controller, which I hear makes this game much easier.

    ranger x took everything that had been implemented before and carried it to the extreme. Parallax scroll with highly dynamic backgrounds, basic 3d even if it was only during the debriefing scenes, many scrolling planes(genesis only has 2 planes but much more can be simulated). Certainly one game that squeezed the machine to its very limits...

I was a kid so the money was burning a hole in my pocket. i saw this and rolled the dice. once i starting playing, i was like, Street fighter what?! Plus it was cheaper so i had money left over to buy some x-men cards. ahh the ol days of being a latchkey kid.

    I was a bit more shady as a kid who was broke, but NEEDED to play new NES games. 2 things. One of them I feel kind of bad about now.
    1. Back in 1985/early '86, when new NES games were not factory sealed, and instead had a little black sticker seal, I would carefully open the game from the bottom flap, play the game until I was sick of it, then carefully replace the cart so you couldn't tell it was ever opened, and then say I got it for a gift and already owned it.. Then get a refund, and repeat.
    2. When I decided I wanted to go back and play older games I came up with a more sinister plan.. I would open the cartridhe shell, replace the PCB chip with an old Vic-20 PCB, and return it. It wasn't a perfect fit, but I figured I'd use that to my advantage. I figured if they noticed the PCB moved around and tested it to find it didn't work it would fit with my story that the game didn't work. Not that they ever checked the pinout. It came back to bite me as many scams do though. I pulled that switcheroo with about 20 games, and in doing so I ended up trashing some very rare VIC-20 carts in the process. I still have the empty shells for a few. I do also feel bad. I guess I've made up for it by buying nearly 600 NES carts since then. Don't do this kids. Crime doesn't pay! ;)

The shop guy said that it may be to difficult for me, because i was too young, so i should choose something different. After that i wanted it even more, to show him that he is wrong, lol.
