  • Staedtler Tinted Watercolour Pencils Review | Review of Staedtler Tinted Watercolor Pencils
    In this review we take a look at the Staedtler Tinted Watercolour Pencils, essentially the pencils are water soluble graphite tinted with a bit of color. If you have ever used the Derwent Graphitint or perhaps the Spectrum Noir Colour Tint, you will have a good understanding of what to expect from the Staedtler Tinted Watercolor Pencils.

    Your mushroom ate gorgeous! Nice review! I've only used the Derwent graphitint but I love their moody tones!
    You could make a swatch on a sticky labor and wrap it around the pencil for identification.

      I left the color names in my comment with the numbers on the pencils they go to so that can hopefully help as well.
      They blend by layering on the paper so lovely. I love these in my sketchbook.

    I actually love these moody colors and find that they blend out better than the derwent grahitint pencils. I do wish they would bring out 12 more pencils to fill the spectrum out so we can blend colors better. I am looking forward to your comparison video. Thank you for another great review and a shroom piece to boot.

  • @selbarton

    Tinted was good to have as not everyone keeps them separate. The color names do exist just not on the pencil or box.
    G2 - tinted cherry
    G20 - Plum
    G6 - Dark Violet
    G1 - Ivy Green
    G5 - Bottle Green
    G36 - Graphite Indigo
    G3 - Ocean Blue
    G83 - Dark Slate Grey
    G9 - Graphite
    G4 - Honey Brown
    G76 - Chestnut Brown
    G73 - Winter Brown
    I leave the numbers on the pencil turned up in my case and labeled my swatches with both the G# and color name. The above is the order my box was in so kept them in that order. It only too, a few minutes to find names when I got them last December. The hardest part was making sure the grey names were connected to the right numbers.
    Would prefer one of the grey pencils was replaced with a yellow, and certainly wouldn't mind a darker grey closer to black for contrast.

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  2 года назад +4

      Thank you so much for the Color names, I couldn’t find them on their website. However, even if they kept the tinted on the pencil there is still plenty of room on the pencil to at the very least add the numbers, that way artists could easily match the pencils to their swatch.
      I just think a company as huge as Staedtler shouldn’t make it that difficult for the artist to find the pigment names or numbers and then try to match them up with the pencils. Even adding the numbers or names to the tin or box would be really helpful.

    • @alanajaa
      @alanajaa 2 года назад +5

      The last digits of the number on the back of the pencil are the color number. So I just made a swatch, put the color number next to it and now choose the right color by checking the number on the back. I did not expect color names on the pencils since they are very affordable and most budget pencils don’t have names on them.

    • @selbarton
      @selbarton 2 года назад +1

      @@TheArtGearGuide the G numbers are on the pencil look on the side that doesn't say tinted. That's why I use that with the swatch. So they do have identifiers to tie to the pencil from the factory.

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  2 года назад +7

      @@selbarton yeah I see that, but that G number is at the end of a longer number. I think for people who aren’t prepared to search their website, crack a code and select two or three alphanumeric digits from a long row of numbers and marry them up to the colours on the website, something really simple for everyone to see and understand would be nice on the barrel or packaging.
      Despite the fact that Staedtler are a massive company and sell what I consider really decent art materials, they seem to have a serious issue with adding Color names or numbers in plain easy to find, for everyone, locations. I reviewed their Luna Watercolor pencils, again really nice pencils but they supplied stickers you could apply to the barrels as means to identify the Color, but half the colors were not available on the sticker sheet and because the barrel of the Luna is a bit different with a twisting effect, it was impossible to know which sticker should be applied to which barrel. I asked Staedtler about this via email and was told that there had been a few misprints made with the sticker sheets, so to be fair I have no idea of knowing if I was unlucky and got a misprinted sheet or if they were all like it.
      I know for some people the pigment name being on the pencil doesn’t matter at all, but for others it is not so much important as helpful. To have the G numbers stuck at the end of the Art No just makes it even more difficult to understand why they couldn’t have made it stand out like the Made in Germany print, or Staedtler Print, or the Tinted Print, but this is only my opinion and given how inexpensive the set are, maybe that factors into the decision making, who knows.

    While I like these, I think the vibrancy of the colors don't give me the tinted graphite look. I prefer the Derwent Graphitints for more desaturated colors.
    I am excited to see your updated review on the Irojiten colored pencils. I think it's a beautiful, classy set as far as looks go.

    I got those a few months ago, because they're so much cheaper than the Derwent ones here in Germany -I really like the colours find them to be pretty soft and not as scratchy as I feared them to be. I'm pretty happy with my purchase, even though I haven't had the chance to really try them out extensively. I'd love to see them produce more shades than those twelve ones :3

    The colors you say are similar, are the "one Cool and one Warm" version of a color. It's very on most companies, their sets come like that.If you notice better, this set is one cool and one warm, from each color. Begin with grey, which is the easiest to notice.

    I loved these pencils! I put a wee swatch round the top of the pencil with some tape. They're totally budget friendly and FUN. I never assumed they were meant to be used on their own. I used them with watercolor pencils and soluble graphite and other bits and bobs. I couldn't bring myself to pay for the derwent ones and these were just a fun stand in. Great review 🙂

      Thank you so much for your wonderful comment I really appreciate. I know what you mean about the Irojiten, when I first got them I really never used then again after the review, but back them I really didn't understand that much about paper. So for this review I am going to so how the pencils react on different grades of paper as well as a few other things, I am really looking forward to completing the Irojiten review.
      Also one of the big issues with the Irojiten when I reviewed them was the difficulty in buying them open stock, but now that issue is resolved and more people can buy them in the knowledge that open stock purchases are no longer a problem.

      Hi Jean, thank you so much. When I started the channel I told myself that if I was going to review products, it would be for people who wanted to watch the videos and not the companies and with that in mind, I knew no matter what, honesty and transparency was the most important things.
      If I liked a product I knew I couldn’t just say I like it, I wanted to show why I liked it and same with if I didn’t like a product.
      My priority is you guys who watch the videos. This is why I add 4 parts to my reviews, video review, written review, images of artwork and speed video of artwork, I want to provide as much detailed information as I can. I guess what I am trying to do is allow you guys to look at the product I am reviewing from 4 different perspectives and with all perspectives considered hopefully it helps you to make an informed decision as to whether or not you want to spend your hard earned money on that product. I want to try and give you guys the next best thing to holding the product in your own hand and test it. But my ultimate goal is that one day, The Art Gear Guide will be the most comprehensive art supply review catalogue online.

    I think your mushrooms looks very realistic & naturly. very good job Ö.Ö
    they can´t mix coal, or graphite with yellow without a greenish looklike.
    dark lemon yellow, darkredish, darkgreen, darkblue, purple and so on - we have all this in the set what we need for mixing many colors from the colorwheel, ...
    I like all these 12 colors from the darker version of staedtlers bright and colorful watercolor pencils set. is it better then derwent, or from other brands? ... I don´t know, but I know this 12 colors from the tinted watercolor pencils set are a very good option for me in a highly quality and the price is ok for lot of fun with all these artist watercolor pencils.

    Hello, Does the bar code number differ from pencil to pencil? Sometimes, I found with Staedler Tri Plus pens, the identifier is in the bar codes. Usually the last 2-4 digits are different. This may aid in the process of either numbering the pencils with tape, or just reading the bar codes. Thank you once again for bringing a very detailed review to another product. I got them (tin box) three months ago and I really liked them. Indeed, the color of the pencil’s cap is not enough for identification but my main concern is that there’s no yellow. Even Derwent Graphitint doesn’t have it!. After all I like Staedtler’s and Derwent’s and they can be blended to any watercolor pencil for a wider range of colors including a yellow-like missing in the sets.

    Enjoyed the video although I haven’t gotten into the tinted graphite. Focusing on colored pencil and watercolor. Surprised that Staedler would make such a basic error in their palette choice . A yellow, red , and blue are basic necessities. The split primaries are even better. First thing I learned in understanding color theory. I am accustomed to renumbering my colored and watercolor pencils. Most pencil sets seem to be numbered erratically, so the first thing I do is put them in color order and number them starting with one. Even found a perfect set of stickers that I can apply vertically that are clear and easy to read on Amazon. Found out applying them horizontally makes any number that has three digits unable to be read while in a case or tin.

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  2 года назад +2

      I understand what you are saying to a certain extent. When I do reviews, I review the product as a standalone product, only because, they are sold as standalone products. Obviously if people who buy the sets have more pencils at home then it is a bonus, but equally there are going to be people who buy the set and don’t have other water soluble pencils at home or other Colored pencils at home.
      After all, the first set of Colored pencils that I ever bought, we’re my only set of pencils for a while, and this could be the case for thousands of first time buyers. This simple set of 12 pencils, could be the set that launches an unknown artist to be the most breathtaking artist of modern times.
      So all that hypothetical story building aside, to have the very basic colors, yellow red and blue in any set, even a set of six, shouldn’t be too difficult for any company to perform. I know they are not the three Primary colors but I think they are essential to any set. Adding these three colors to a set of 12, still leaves plenty of scope for the remaining 9 colors.

    • @wanderingstar5673
      @wanderingstar5673 2 года назад

      @@TheArtGearGuide - thank you for understanding my point on the three primaries. I have often purchase a 12 set to try out various pencils. I have those pencils and really like them. However I don’t think your review is doing them justice. You spend a long time talking about how there is no color number, when in fact there is. It may not be very obvious but I find this to be the case with other staedler products as well. The color names may not be on the staedler website but there are easy to find online. The pencils are available in tins in Europe, for example at Amazon Germany. Overall, the review seams to be a bit rushed to me, you could have done more research.
