Good try, Kelly! Maybe the wood was too hard for these tools. Maybe try balsa wood next time. It's lighter weight and softer and most likely a lot less frustrating!
Kelly, I took a sculpting class in college many many years ago. My dad provided me with a block of wood - a hard piece of hardwood. I struggled. Everyone else in the class used soft Balsa wood from a craft store. They were succeeding and I was crying! So your trial might not be a fair representation of the quality of the tools. Just saying... But, like me, you tried! The instructor gave me a C for trying.
Why didn't your teacher give you a heads up on the wood? I have taught for years with pre schoolers to collage age and I would not do that to any one in my classes.
Kelly, I commend you for trying this. I know nothing about wood carving but my husband is a woodworker and he says the right tool is always the key. Also I think a different kind of wood is also a key. Yes you are a sucess. Did you have fun for the dollar you spent? Maybe not, but you did try!
Look at you go! When I was in grammar school, in art class, we used to use some tools like that to carve rubber tiles and then use the tile as a stamp.
The tools are not the problem. A 2X4 is not really the type of wood you want to use. A pine board would be great! These tools then would be much better!
@@pattilundgren7627 regardless it is still a piece of softwood. Pine, Douglas fir, hemlock, it’s all considered softwood. I think the tools she is using is made more for balsa type woods. They are made for crafting. Just my thoughts. God bless.
When you do your outline if you'll kind of hammer the straight one at a 90 degree angle to the depth you want you'll find it easier to keep the cuts cleaner. I think the issue with the tools coming apart is just the glue they used, they really didn't break they just came apart.
Use the right tools for the right job. Just adjust your material / wood that you used. But now you know and saved us from finding out on our own. Thank you !!!
Thanks for trying these. I bought a set as well. I have read several of the comments about using a softer wood so I will keep that in mind when I try my set of carving tools. Thanks again Kelly, and to viewers who suggested using a softer wood. Now we know!🙂
I think you did great 👍 ♥️ and I was just gonna use these on my dollar tree wood. It looks like the wood 🪵 you used was super thick/ sturdy 💪, so I would give it a shot with Dollar Tree softer wood maybe?😃 Thank you 🙏♥️ so much for sharing this with us, so if I try my DT tools with a softer DT wood 🪵 I won’t feel as bad if they break too😅 lol 😂
These are great for carving the little white erasers, soap or clay. 2 by 4 is a hard wood not great for carving. Hope your niece and family are over covid. My daughter and granddaughter are better.🥰🐞🤗
It is simply a learning experience. I’m sure if you talked to anyone who does this they will tell you it takes practice, practice, practice as does anything else. I admire your spunk and determination.
Im so happy you made this video! My husband does woodworking and i was thinking about getting him these since he loved the sanding block so much... Thank you for all you do for all of us crafters!
Hi from Kansas! Thank you for trying these out for us. Not all items from Dollar Tree are a go, as we all know. You help us find what works and what doesn't. Thanks for being you and helping us make wonderful crafts.
I stay away from their glues and spray adhesives too. None of them have worked for me. Most of the paints aren’t goo and you can get cheaper at Walmart. But I love their stickers, stencils and loads of other things!
You’re so awesome!! I have been using these tools for things that benefit my crafts, never thinking to see what each tool is actually for and test that!! Go you!!! ☺️☺️☺️
Girlfriend, you probably did better than any of us could have! Great job for giving it a go! Thank you very much for your review on that...A dollar saved!! 🤣🤣🤣
That was good for your first carving project. Your Dollar store wood craving tools performed as good as you could have expected. Really good tools are made of quality high speed steel and are razor sharp. They also cost a lot more money! The edge will stay that way for a long time before needing sharpening. Cheaper tools can be frustrating to use as you seemed to have learned when trying to carve more complex shapes. Sharper tools are also safer tools and don’t require as much force to get them to cut the wood fibers. If you do attempt to carve again make sure to wear a cut proof glove made of leather or Kevlar to,protect your hands. One slip can make a pretty bad cut.
Kelly the dollar tree has soft wood planks. They are probably what you want to use & I think you should try again 🤗 For a first try you didn't stab yourself which is a good thing
Kelly, we used those tools on vinyl tiles or linoleum tiles to make stamps. I made an elephant and a bunny. Was fun and worked well with a ink pad or roller with paint. If you don't carve the extra away you get an square with an elephant in the middle.
I use the curved wood tools to carve the signs at the dollar tree to make the fake wood look like planks. The tools work for me but I dont use them for real wood. I love your chanel and everything you make. Thanks Kelly.
I had wondered about these tools from DT. Thank you for trying them out and sharing your experience! I love your crafty videos but enjoyed this one too because you were so honest.
It's funny you posted this because I just gave in and bought these yesterday. 😁 I think you did great for the first time and using DT tools. Thank you for always being willing to try things.
A 2x4 is a very hard wood - it’s made to build homes. Try the tools with balsa or base wood, they’re much softer. If fact, I’d love to see a “take 2” video with the appropriate wood. And a new set of Dollar Tree tools. 😊
I used these while making faux wood planks from dollar tree foam board. They were perfect for making all the markings in the “wood”. They were great for that. lol!
A good video. Some points that I noticed. 1 , 2x4 pine is not the best wood to carve, a basswood ,butternut or balsa wood would be better. 2, your hammer, most wood carving is done with a wooden mallet. The claw hammer you were using could have loosened the knife blades in the handle. 3 , the angle of the knife was alittle to steep. A lower angle would not gouge into the wood as much making it easier to carve. Taking less of a chunk of wood off at a time. 4, sharpness of the blades. I might have run the tools over a sharing stone before use, the factory edge for these tools might be alittle less sharper than needed for true carving. Just a few things I saw that might have some affect on the carving and proformance of the tool.
Kelly, I had tools similar to yours when I was about 9 or 10. I used then to cut Lino for printing blocks. Hope this helps. I love it that you gave it a try and showed us your result. Happy weekend. 🇬🇧
Glad you tried these i just bought the yesterday so if you soak the wood in water its much easier to carve let soak at least 5-12 hours. Makes wood softer easier to work with . btw love your videos
I wonder if you had been working on the wood plaques or panels that are sold by $Tree if that would have worked out better? They're sorta like balsa wood so maybe softer? Love how you are hanging in there!
Decades ago, I took a Japanese doll making class and the doll forms were made of a composite wood .. think sawdust glued into a shape for carving. I looked at the wood craving tools at one of my Dollar Tree stores. I decided to not get them. After watching you, I may go get the wood carving tools and use a softer wood or a piece of styrofoam to practice on. You did very good for your first try and the hardwood that you used. I so enjoy your channel & love all the tips, hacks, projects, etc that you share with us. Headed on to the Shamrock video & the solar lights. :)
I grabbed these to try them out for my whittling kit I take out on hikes. I needed a veining tool aka v tool for texture, but didn't want to add a lot of weight to my bag. I only needed the gouge and the veiner not the skew or flat blade. I gave them a good stroping on the beveled side and they worked perfectly on my test block. I also trimmed the handles down to fit my hand so I could use them like more of a palm tool.
Just wanted to tell you how much I appreciate that you tried! How funny! I tried a coping saw once and got the blade stuck on the first slide - then it broke! So my experience was the same as yours. Go get ‘em tiger!
Maybe try soap carving with them.
Right!! Or soap stone
Good idea! I was thinking carving rubber, like an eraser to make a stamp.
That's what I was going to say, too. Soap wouldcarve pretty well.
That’s what my 8 year old does with a pocket knife (with adult supervision )
