What’s up guys! Welcome back to Dame Untamed! My name is Nikki, and this is your one stop shop for all things travel and adventure.
This week, we’re trekking down to South America and into the beautiful country of Ecuador. During my 6 week trip to SA in 2017, I had the absolute privilege of visiting a very special place. Located near the small town of Mera where the Andes mountains meet the Amazon rainforest, is the Merazonia wildlife rescue and rehabilitation centre.
Founded in 2004, Merazonia has been responsible for the successful release of hundreds of animals thanks to its dedicated staff and volunteers. This type of work is no walk in the park, though. The hours are long, weather is WET, and the cleaning of poop is a daily chore. But the rewards are endless and the experience is like none other! Typically, the animals brought to Merazonia are confiscated from the wildlife trafficking industry by the Ministry of Environment.
Animals commonly found at the centre include: capuchins, wholly monkeys, howler monkeys, tamarin monkeys, many species of parrots & macaws, kinkajous, small mammals & occasionally felines).
Merazonia has a strict hands off policy with most of the animals thanks to its devotion to rehabilitation. It’s important the animals don’t become desensitized to humans. Exceptions are babies/ juveniles who need surrogate parents and those unable to be released due to health complications, such as Whistler the Kinkajou who receives extra special attention as part of his enrichment. In the case an animal is too imprinted for release, Merazonia provides them with the most natural, comfortable life possible at the refuge.
For the wellbeing of the animals, Merazonia does not accept tourist visits. It also does not receive government funding, which means it relies solely on volunteer fees and donations. The minimum stay requirement is 2 weeks at $150.00/ week. I was really lucky to visit for a few days (my travel buddy Aly had volunteered a few years before & had an in so I was treated to a condensed volunteer opportunity!). The longer you stay, the lower the weekly cost.
Volunteers stay in a large jungle hut housing up to 11 people, dormitory style, with the option of moving into private cabins for those who stay longer. There is a fully equipped kitchen and hot showers, but no electricity.
Places like Merazonia do extremely important work in wildlife conservation and need our help to continue to fund their efforts. Though my time at Merazonia was short, the experience left a lasting impression on my heart. If you’re interested in learning about how you can help this amazing place, please refer to the description where I have listed more information. You can only imagine how a place like this has been deeply impacted by the pandemic!

Hello there! I believe all accommodations are dormitory style here, which means you share rooms. If I remember correctly, there are also certain times of day where electronics can be charged 😌
