I'm 50/50 about getting this one or the old 600mm f4 E FL ED lens used for a similar price. The 600 F4 is about 1.5 Kilos heavier, and I'm only shooting handheld, but is much more usable in low light. The 800 PF is of course the lighter option, and it's native, so probably fewer issues with the AF, but it's kind of a pain shooting early in the morning or at/after sunset.
Thank you -- I unboxed mine last week. You might want to buy an XXXXL Hoddie to protect the nice leather cap. The bad news is the lens foot mount is different to previous super teles so one has to use a lens plate for now. You might want to program a button to return the lens to minimum focus distance - to recover quickly from "lost in the background syndrome". Try it with the ZTC14(f/9) and ZTC20 (f/13)
Great presentation JO. I have found that tracking moving subjects with a lens that big is an art as much as a skill. I try to liken it to swinging a 12ga shotgun when shooting trap or skeet. Follow-through is KEY. You did very well for your first time out with it and the images are BEAUTIFUL! Congratulations on a beautiful lens!
Very nice. I'm gonna say it. Back in the late 70's and 80's I did sports, modeling and nature photography. I stopped when it became digital. I don't think I have any of the old gear. There was a rivalry between Nikon and Canon. I chose Canon because Nikon controls seemed backwards to me. I will check it from time to time. I think it's cool being able to shoot a video and get some stills at the same time.
I'm also an old film shooter, with mostly sports in my background. But I've always been a Nikon guy. Unless you work for a company that provides the gear, I think you tend to stick with a brand once you've made the investment.
Great video JO. I too use photography for relaxation and fun. I was a professional photog for 15 yrs, (in a former life), but still shoot cameras and guns for grins and giggles. Grace & Peace.
@@KnightsandWeekends Yes! It is quiet time where one's awareness of nature is heightened as we seek to capture their majesty and beauty. My favorite place to do that is on the Va Cape at Cape Charles. Much of the same wildlife that you have portrayed so beautifully. I can't wait to see more images with that big lens.
Maybe it's just how it shows up, but noticing the animal eye AF icon isn't turned on on the viewfinder screenshots; so if you don't have specific animal AF on vs. Auto you might try that so it's not worrying about people. (Normally the animal icon shows up up top). Just got my 800 6.3 and it's great; it's noticably "stickier" than the 800 5.6. Works great on the Z9.
Thanks. I do have animal detection on, but I tend to toggle through my EVF configs and like to use one with less clutter. That was an oversight, since I was capturing that output for video! Good catch, and I'll try to be more aware of that next time!
It would depend on the task at hand. I have a large selection of the Z lenses, and several F-mount lenses that are all being used on the Z9. Maybe I could do a rundown on what I typically use each lens for...
Those are for the Peak Design Systems camera strap. It's a quick connect/disconnect system so that you don't have to hang straps on everything - just there when you need it.
Having just watched another reveiw of that lense on another channel which tbh was a complete wasted oppertunity to test it .. Instead all the guy did was Portrait's WTAF . I wonder if you are willing to prove it's worth of capturing High altitude Aircraft .. and Ships sailing/anchored far offshore .. I want to see if it can capture detail at such a distance .. and that of the Moon .. Or am i just wasting my time asking you . 800mm lense imo is meant for targets at A DISTANCE , Curious Q - What was the lense used to capture Groom lake from Tikaboo peak .. before the Gov bought it to stop .. folks with camera and long lenses taking pics
I am doing a lot of still work with the lens, and plan to do another video showing the great versatility and more thoughts after real time in the field using it. Thanks for watching! I hope you'll tune in for the next one!
This 800mm will capture every detail there is, for sure. But for subjects at a distance, for the examples you mention, you're always limited by the atmospheric conditions aka seeing. For good plane spotting etc. you'll need patience for perfect conditions. Don't blame the glass.
@@falklumo I capture high fliers all the time when it's not cloudy n no blue sky to be seen . When those who review lenses with long reach continually fail imho of being able to show the lenses ability of capturing targets at Distance . . When they all tend to focus on Wildlife . .
Price is $6,500 U.S. Whether that is cheap or expensive depends entirely on one's perspective and value for the object. Nikon's previous 800mm prime lens goes for more than twice as much and is much larger and heavier (albeit 1/3-stop faster). At this price, it will remain sold out for a couple of years, I think.
Arca Swiss compatibility is done by a huge number of aftermarket companies, and even Tamron has Arca Swiss compatible lens feet. Perhaps the use of that name specifically might be a problem, which is why most say "Arca-type compatible". Everyone and their brother make compatible products. It's basically a dovetail. I really don't consider a brief fact mentioned to describe a product's specifications to viewers as "whining". But having to spend $100 on a replacement foot (which by the way is Arca compatible and somehow magically not being sued for that) after waiting for it to be available is something I would like to avoid, and I know many others feel the same way.

Good to know!
I love the fast-forward - thanks for being respectful of our time, Justin Opinion! Great Nikon, too! =)
I meant to zip through it even a bit faster... I try not to bore people to death! Thanks much for watching!

It's a magnificent lens.

Would absolutely love to see more videos on the 800mm 🙏🙏🙏
Marvelous lens and video!
Great video JO. I too use photography for relaxation and fun. I was a professional photog for 15 yrs, (in a former life), but still shoot cameras and guns for grins and giggles. Grace & Peace.
It's a combination of the photography itself and being out observing these great creatures and trying to capture their personalities, etc.

WOW!!!! That is impressive...and I am not a photographer.
Wow, thank you!
Fabulous review
Kind of you - thanks!
Nice lens and performance with the Z9! What other lens would you pair with this, 100-400mm or something else? Thanks 😊

OMG! get some pics of the ZL/1 with that thing! of course I know nothing about photography ... 😂
A car shoot is definitely on the agenda for this summer!
Great stuff 👏 Thanks for sharing 👍
🙏 thanks 👍👍
Impressive 👍
Just ordered this lens and the Z9…now I wait😂
Hope you get it soon. BTW, I adore GSDs.
what are the red knobs you attached to your Z9, hanging where normally the strap is attached?

It is prnounced FREN-EL because Augustin-Jean Fresnel was French.
which focus setting used sir..
Wide Area Custom with animal detection, and 3D Tracking.

First of all, it is Nikon (neeeekon) NOT "naicon" 🤣🤣🤣
ARCA SWISS is proprietary,as such is not available on Nikon feet, please quit whining about ARCA SWISS,not only you but others.Good grief

If you think that using Arca-Swiss specs is a problem, then what about a NATO rail? You probably risk an entire war here ;)
