The idea of Xabi Alonso being a “flavour of the month” manager is a massive miss imo and I think so much more credit needs to be given because he’s not just been manager of Bayer this season. The club barely spent in the summer of 22/23, their best player Wirtz was out with an ACL tear until January, their striker Schick could barely string a few games together, they had an aging squad that needed cleaning out and collectively were so low on confidence because they just kept getting battered. He helped stabilise the club, kept them in Europe via the Europa prelims, brought them back to Europa league places, rebuilt the entire team the next summer, completely changed their tactical vision, redefined 4 or 5 key players and made them world beaters who still have not lost ONE game this season. And they’ve played Bayern twice! He’s not even lost to Bayern in his entire time at the club! If that isn’t the hall mark of a great manager (and we had the same discussions around Postecoglu when he signed on from a league that is nowhere near as hard as the Bundesliga) I don’t know what is!!

The idea of Xabi Alonso being a “flavour of the month” manager is a massive miss imo and I think so much more credit needs to be given because he’s not just been manager of Bayer this season. The club barely spent in the summer of 22/23, their best player Wirtz was out with an ACL tear until January, their striker Schick could barely string a few games together, they had an aging squad that needed cleaning out and collectively were so low on confidence because they just kept getting battered. He helped stabilise the club, kept them in Europe via the Europa prelims, brought them back to Europa league places, rebuilt the entire team the next summer, completely changed their tactical vision, redefined 4 or 5 key players and made them world beaters who still have not lost ONE game this season. And they’ve played Bayern twice! He’s not even lost to Bayern in his entire time at the club! If that isn’t the hall mark of a great manager (and we had the same discussions around Postecoglu when he signed on from a league that is nowhere near as hard as the Bundesliga) I don’t know what is!!
This is probably the least football knowledge lineup but can’t lie I am excited to just laugh and enjoy.

Knocking Xabi because he hasn’t done it in the PL is crazy. Klopp and tuchel came from the Bundesliga and succeeded. And maybe the bundesliga isn’t quite as competitive but to be ahead of Bayern by 10 points with a team that’s never won the league before and be undefeated in all competitions is more impressive than getting Brighton 6th and sitting in 8th.
