This was the personal project of Ted Turner, Founder of Turner Broadcasting Network, who personally wanted to produce and present both sides of the story in as dramatic and historically accurate (i.e. Without Hollywood) context. So that audiences could truly appreciate the sacrifices made at this battle to end slavery and preserve the Union.

Yes one of the strongest parts of the movie. For me strongest moment was when general Armistead was asking about general Hancock, his old friend while he was dying. I saw a lot of war movies from different eras but this scene is written to my heart. Even for me as a non-american citizen it was a very strong scene as well as whole movie is unforgettable. Very good story (history is best scenarist) and perfect acting. Martin Sheen was incredible as Robert Lee aswell as Tom Berenger as general Longstreet.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
    In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
    In Flanders fields.

oh god slavery and racism did not end at the Mason Dixon line dumbass. The north was not any more caring about slavery or non slavery as it was concerned about keeping the union and not allowing the south to secede. The war was not fought over slaves please do not fool yourself to think it was

+PressAForStupidity Heck plenty of those in the south couldn't even vote.

Actually, many southern generals wrote that they couldn't care less about slaves and simply were fighting for their rights away from the union, slavery or not.

Visited the battle field at Gettysburgh and walked the entire distance from the Confederate line to the Union line and wondering as I walked how many confederate dead I must have passed on that field.

One of my all-time favorite pieces. 3:18 (the timpani roll) gives me chills every time. I wrote a poem to this music that was read before an Education seminar of mine in college. Amazing music. =)

I am very thankful to these soldiers who fought for the Independence of this country. And I thank all of our soldiers right now who are fighting in Afghanistan. Our soldiers die everyday. I know that they have honor.

I watched both the New York and UK tribute memorials on TV marking the 10th anniversary of September 11th attacks.
I was watching the UK memorial service when all of a sudden i recognised the music the brass band were playing!! I shouted Gettysburg!! It was fantastic!!
Both the New York and UK memorials were very touching and brought a tear to my eye.
R.I.P to all those that lost their lives and prayers to the families.
