Yoga For Special Needs Children

  • This academic year we are continuing to place an emphasis on the wellbeing of our students. We are starting to introduce discrete wellbeing and mindfulness lessons across the school with some classes practising yoga. One of our teachers attended a three day 'Special Yoga' course founded by Jyoti Jo Manuel focussing on learning effective techniques to use with children with autism and/or ADHD. Practicing yoga and mindfulness with SEN children supports them in learning how to manage their emotions, increases their concentration and maintains their attention. The children are encouraged to practise a variety of breathing techniques so they familiarise themselves with calming strategies they can draw on during times of distress and challenge. It is important to teach the children these techniques when they are calm and motivated which is why it is such a key aspect of the yoga sessions we teach at school. Our yoga sessions also support and strengthen gross motor and core strength.
