Warner Bros. Pictures invites you to experience the extraordinary sisterhood of three women who share one unbreakable bond in “The Color Purple.” This bold new take on the beloved classic is directed by Blitz Bazawule, a multi-medium artist whose breakout first feature is the highly acclaimed “The Burial of Kojo.” The film’s all-star producers are Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg, Scott Sanders and Quincy Jones.
“The Color Purple” stars Oscar nominee Taraji P. Henson (“The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”), SAG Award winner and Tony Award nominee Danielle Brooks (“The Color Purple,” “Orange Is the New Black”), Tony nominee and Emmy Award winner Colman Domingo (“Euphoria,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”), Tony Award nominee Corey Hawkins (“Six Degrees of Separation,” “In the Heights”), Oscar- and Grammy-winning artist H.E.R. (“Judas and the Black Messiah”), Grammy nominee Halle Bailey (“The Little Mermaid”), Oscar nominee Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor (“King Richard,” “Ray”), and Grammy-winning artist Fantasia Barrino in her major motion picture debut.
The screenplay is by acclaimed playwright Marcus Gardley, who won a WGA Award for “Maid.” His script is based on the novel by Alice Walker and based on the musical stage play, book (of the musical stage play) by Marsha Norman, music and lyrics by Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray.
Joining director Bazawule behind the camera are a roster of acclaimed artisans, including Oscar-nominated director of photography Dan Laustsen (“The Shape of Water”), Oscar-winning production designer Paul Denham Austerberry (“The Shape of Water”), editor Jon Poll (“Bombshell,” “Meet the Parents”), costume designer Francine Jamison-Tanchuck (“Glory,” “One Night in Miami…”) and choreographer Fatima Robinson (“Dreamgirls”). The music is by Oscar nominee Kris Bowers (“King Richard,” “Green Book,” documentary short “A Concerto Is a Conversation”).
Warner Bros. Pictures presents a Harpo Films Production, an Amblin Entertainment Production, a Scott Sanders Production/a QJP Production, “The Color Purple.” It will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures and is set to open in theaters in North America on December 25, 2023 and internationally beginning 18 January 2024.

I know the original one was God tier in a lot of important areas of filming, but I'll give this one a chance.
This movie is an absolute thrill! I couldn't resist seeing it twice already. Dive in for pure enjoyment; don't watch it to compare with the original! Trust!

I just saw it and it was very good. Fantasia did a great job as Celie and Taraji did a great job as she always does, The musical numbers were well choreographed. Although I would rate it below the orginal, it was good. The only reason i rate it below the original is that Danny Glover, Whoopi Goldberg and Oprah all turned in Oscar worth performances. But is definitely one of the best pictures of the year and may be Oscar worthy.

This newest version is a movie based on the TONY-WINNING BROADWAY MUSICAL based on the original. Some aspects of it was more true to the novel than Spielberg’s perfect first version starring Whoopi Goldberg.
The title was misleading, it should be the colour black 🌚

@@PACNYYYeah, EMOTIONAL. If you don’t shed a tear watching The Color Purple… . BOTH versions….you have a heart of stone. My husband and I saw the musical version yesterday and it left me with swollen eyes from crying….as did the original; every time I watch it. The movie was wonderful; and the acting superb….just like the original movie.

And a Merry Christmas to you all ❤! Just hear me out real quick; Now i’ve done seen the play 3 separate times on Broadway, 1 with my family, 2 with my co-workers and 3 with my friends. But I must tell you all, that this newest version is so GOOD! Simply good because there are surprise appearances and singing that made me lean and sit up in my seat. Oprah, Spielberg and Quincy made a powerhouse movie.👍👍👍😘

"West Side Story" already had a musical movie. This one doesn't. And not everyone was able to get to Broadway to see this - lots of musical theater fans looking forward to it.

I wasn't impressed. Too much singing and they rewrote epic scenes that did no justice to the original. Cinematography was great but it lacked the depth of emotion of the original with all of the singing but it was entertaining none the less. Didn't really care for them trying to make shug and celie lesbians.
It's adapting the Tony award winning Broadway musical. And the relationship between Shug & Celie is from the book.

Why would anyone want to be "entertained" by this?! I've got my own problems, I don't want to become depressed watching a movie about a 14 yr old pregnant girl abused in the slave south period, not exactly the feel good hit of escapism
It's set from 1910-1950 (approximately). You should probably have paid attention in history class.

Slave movie? not one slave is in this movie; that comment says a lot about you. The movie is based on years 1909-1947 and so no slaves.It is not overtly political. You and others like you that make comments like this prove that you know nothing about and assumed incorrectly that the movie is about slavery.
