My son sent video to me about all motors I have he's mid 40s and jad never seen them run it know of, spent his life in airforce and just retired, was here 3 years ago and I had a couple of Shrikes not perfect enough to save in my collection of many. I have a weighted bottom piece that use to hold umbrella table. And used that flat shoe string cable companys leave behind pulling lines, made a tether line from that, put a wooden ring on top of base so string can't slip off, and other end is tied to the wire V shrikes used on the cars. So got some new style fuel, and added some castor oil. Made a row of weak flashlight batterys to connect with solid copper wire from 110 lines, in wood base, just lay in D batterys and check voltage. 1.5 volts wasn't enough when cox made them, and over 2 volts will blow the glow head sometimes, so while they were here I ran those motors and they got a big kick out of it, I had made a twin engine shrike out of wood and my original Shrike axles and tires. They stood behind a backhoe bucket for safety. And I turned it loose, as speed increased the car goes up on 2 wheels round and round until out of fuel, my twin engine one always ran out first, then down on all 4 tires still going fast then runs out of fuel coasting to a stop. Then I hooked up a yellow cox shrike and ran that for them! They all got a big kick out of! Had an old McCoy 35 mounted on a board, about a 10 inch wooden prop. Been in a box of motors for years. Hooked fuel line up, primed it and to my surprize it took off on first flip and stayed running! They thought that was cool. I explained what it took to start them and we use to fly those on U Control planes! And Cox motors on Free Flights you had to go find when they came down! Had some that flew away! Then there was the helicopters that that flying stick. Was a new ball game to them and to see! There eyes lit up up and hands over there ears! Big difference in 25 years! It was like why? Other you put batterys in and go! Well yeah you can! This was what we had back then and ran! Radio control was expensive! You bought balsa kits and built your planes to fly! Or you bought Cox toys to run and fly. Cars like shrikes, thrlen dune buggies to choppers, to funny cars on a line.
That's awesome. It's true battery powered is much more simple, but the tiny glow engines helped hone troubleshooting skills and patience. I'm so happy that glow is not dead. I'll always enjoy my Nitro. If you check out some of our other videos, you will see that Nitro is still running strong to this day. Thank you for the comment.
The Cox .049 was my first motor for a duo wire guided airplane in the 1960's. Had to take it apart like a hundred times. Just thinking about it makes almost smell the fuel it ran on.
Ah yes the smell of fuel....childhood memories I still can recall. Also the sound of that (swarm of bees) emanating from that motor is equally as cheerful. We used to fill just the prop motor hose up, and start it and throw it in the air ...and then run like hell.. In the days of my youth.......
@koji8882 Yep. Grade school got my first kit at a hobby shop in a garage, after pouring though the Estes catalog. Tunes, balsa wood and model glue.Took A size motors and the wind took it away befor the first card of motors were used up. As a teen going for the D size motors, 4th of July anytime! (If the wind was lite, I learned).
Thanks for the video. Me and some of my friends used to play with Cox engines when we were kids in the late sixties and early seventies. We had dune buggies, airplanes and even a motorcycle. Good memories from the past.
In 1980, a schoolmate sold me some of his 0.049’s. He was later relieved of life in a motorbike accident. Construction zone on a bridge, hit a cable, cabeza removed
I remember something like that 40 years ago cox made a free flight helicopter with a .010 engine, took it out in the field and started it up still waiting for it to come down
I had this flying saucer in The 8O’s that was made by them… round spaceship with a huge plastic propeller in the center … lolol. I also had The Cox 57’ Chevy for Christmas one year and I started it in my bedroom yep I hooked up the glow - plug showing my cousins step by step how to start it… just like the guy on the instructional plastic record that came with it … lolol spun the back wheel and that bitch started … !! Man was my mom pissed ..!! Did I mention it was like 2:3O in the morning though…?? Lolol. They just don’t make toys like these anymore … I still remember driving the nail into the center of the road for the string that kept this car running in a circle .. be neat to put RC servos on one of those …lolol for steering and just leave the throttle stuck… lolol
@@v8hotrodlincoln Myself and my two cousins who lived next door all got one of these for christmas one year. We flew the crap out of them in a big open field by our houses. Great fun! I used to tune the motor rich in an attempt to get it to hover at around eye level. Harder than it sounds!

It is called a McCutchen Wing or Charybdis. It was designed by Charles McCutchen. He published the plans back in 1952. The name Charybdis comes from ancient Greek history. The Charybdis was the name of the monster that Greek mariners believed were responsible for making the random whirlpools they would encounter while at sea.

Thank you for the comment.
when physics class gets fun
The Cox .049 was my first motor for a duo wire guided airplane in the 1960's. Had to take it apart like a hundred times. Just thinking about it makes almost smell the fuel it ran on.
Kept going in circles just like this monocopter 😂😂I had one too but I never got it off the ground
Boys will be boys

I had this flying saucer in The 8O’s that was made by them… round spaceship with a huge plastic propeller in the center … lolol. Man was my mom pissed ..!! Did I mention it was like 2:3O in the morning though…?? Lolol.
