What Sachs never mentions is the real cause of the US Cold War with Russia, he keeps saying the US wanted dominance but never says why, It's clear the US is doing the same thing with China, The US knows it can't go to war with those countries the reason is clear no one wins and everyone will die, The only reason Sachs never mentioned is the Dollar Reserve statute it's a leverage they don't want to lose the only countries who can say this is a scam and needs to end are China and Russia,

Nothing could be farther from the truth. Russia has a history of aggression towards its neighbours. See Georgia 2008 and Crimea (that was just to beautiful and important not to annexe it). They also invested heavily in trying to influence the elections in the Republic of Moldova. The reality is that all the small nations which were once in the Soviet block want to be part of NATO to avoid further aggression from Russia, including my own country, Romania. These nations want to be independent, to decide their own future and they want democracy. They are ready to die for this. He wasn't d*mb. If you understand that time period. There are many informal agreements which have solved problems & create peace. It's called gentlemen agreement. But in the trans world no one cares that's where it became a problem. This Gorbachev is the last informal agreement which should keep peace in the world. To understand things you need to learn history not west hypocrites education.
Gorbachev was not naïve, at best he was simply stupid, but most importantly he was a traitor, fully high on "western values". There is a reason why he is hated in Russia. He has destroyed Soviet Union, that was corrupt and inept, but offered nothing in return. If he would have bee naïve, then as times passeed he would learn. But he just kept on pushing same idiotic ideas and narratives, with pretty much all of them being detrimental to Russia. He was like modern celebrities, zero understanding of real world, but plenty of ego and delusions of grandeur.
Forget the "20 year period". Russians will never accept something like this. Never means never not something else in the middle with timetables. The arrogance of some people thinking and assuming that others are that much naive and stupid always gets me.. And is even worse considering that is coming out of the mouths and minds of supposedly the high level politicians that we intrusted our future.
Proposal about Ukraine not joining NATO for 20 years just means 20 years for NATO to rearm Ukraine for next war. Same thing as Mints agreement in 2014 just to buy time to rearm Ukraine. It will not fly the second time. Russia want a permanent solution in peace talk otherwise they can continue the fight. They are winning and EU army is nothing without Americans.
Не надейтесь что опять вам удастся всех перехитрить . Взять тайм аут на 20 лет и втихаря перевооружить Украину для реванша. Вам никто не даст шанса еще раз.
It's not about any NATO, but about russian nazism and fascism towards ukrainians as a nation. Russia openly claims for genocide of ukrainians based on their identity. As for NATO, Finland and Sweden joined NATO and? Finland is closer to St.petersburg and Moscow than Ukraine. NATO was never a reason for anything in Ukraine. russia doesnt want Ukraine to be in NATO because NATO means protection.
Um ... they are right next to Russia. Russia wants them demilitarised with not links to ANY military alliance. That's Russia's terms. Now ... given what has happened to Ukrainians and the deliberate targeting of Ukrainian civilians, how safe and free do you think Ukrainians would be? How free would their parliament be to make laws, trade, etc? It's a little like those brave hunters to attend special safaris where the animals released have their claws and teeth taken out so that the hunters do not need to fear being hurt as they hunt them down. Russia runs that type of safari.
If Russia wants to end an alleged Russia/US conflict, all they have to do is pull out of Ukraine. This video has hammer and sickle stamped all over it.
He was instrumental in Russia becoming what it is now. He was advisor to Yeltsyn/Gaydar goverment and prescribed a shock therapy as panaceum. They listened, because similar thing worked in Poland, maybe not without issues, but acceptable. Gaydar treated Sachs advise literally and switched the system to capitalism overnight in a country in which nobody, but a few individuals had any idea about normal business. It caused total chaos, poverty and extreme crime rate. Russians felt humiliated. They associate this period with democracy and Putin's era with recovery. Democracy is a dirty word in Russia. They blame the US for everything - traditionally.
Sovereign countries can make their own decision to join NATO. Why are those countries with the most historical interactions with Russia been the ones most eager to join? Who are we to say Yah or Nay.
Cuba is a sovereign country, and when they sought a military alliance with Russia, the US surrounded them with a naval blockade. US incentivizes these countries to join NATO
@josephdouglas9685 NATO is a supermarket for the USA to sell weapons. since europe was peaceful for decades, they stopped buying weapons. the USA needed to expand NATO to expand their weapons market. countries like Türkiye only joined NATO in the hope of being accepted into the EU … didn’t work. georgia & ukraine tried the same move (couldn’t learn from Türkiye…) disaster !
As a Chinese, i wanna show my deepest respect Prof. Jeffrey Sachs. I really hope he gets invited to China and have dialogue with the public, schools and officials. But i still like you too Cyrus 👍. Sadly the US anti-China politicians never spend a day or two in China trying to understand who we truly are.
He was there , face to face with Yeltzin, during the dissolution of the USSR by the Stalinist bureacratic ruling elites and the transformation from a command econmy to a market bases, aka oligarch based, capitalism economy. I was there, lived through and followed those events, as they happened.
Jefrfrey Sach s does not care about Urkainian people or for that matter about of people of countries oppressed by Russia. Eastern Europian countries fled from Russia as soon as they could after the fall of soviet union.
You lost me at "the war began because Russia felt surrounded" or whatever. The truth is probably more simple and goes back to Euromaidan. It also draws parallels with the China-Taiwan situation (democratic neighbor on authoritarian's doorstep). Whatever you believe, tyranny cannot be allowed to prevail.
It's like the Russian promise to Ukraine to respect their borders, independence, and refrain from use of force against them if Ukraine gave Russia all their nukes in 1994.
@@joebob-p3z except before Maidan there were no moves against Ukraine. Crimea was taken because Ukraine broke the deal that allowed Russian military bases be stationed there so Russia has access to the sea.
I love Sachs simply because he advocate peace instead of conflict to resolve issues. He is spoke very eloquently, knowledgeable and wise. He's also very sincere in his pursuit of spreading peace.
And that is a high ideal. But you'd be surprised to know that some countries do not want peace. Putin's idea of peace is appeasement or acquiescence to his will. Putin is the one threatening nuclear strikes. No European country or NATO have threatened Russia. Russia is opposed to NATO, not out of fear of invasion, but fear it will no longer be an empire. Remember that the Russian Federation and the then Soviet Union is a conglomerate of lands and territories that the Russians invaded and defeated. Russia's history of aggression is a long, long history that has not stopped. So Mr Sachs and others such as yourself can dream of peace but there are nations that want power, there a groups that want power - not so they can live peacefully but so they have power and wealth. Putin is one of the richest men in the world whilst his country even prior to the war, is not. Peace can only come if all players want that. We are now in a situation just like WW2 where nations could have said to Hitler - okay, we want peace, so it's okay. You can rule us. Russia's activities in Ukraine have not been about trying to take over a country by defeating its military - it's been about trying to seize territory by defeating the citizens of that country and its use of torture, rape and murder tell you that the Russians are not people who want peace - they want superiority. It is not just Russia, of course, but when you look at the current alliance of Russia, Iran, North Korea - you can see that they are perfectly reasonable and peaceful rulers who want to better the world.
While I have great respect for Sachs work, I am somewhat disappointed in his analysis of this situation. Having visited Ukraine number of times, the Ukrainians have no love for Russian control and voted decisively in a democratic referendum to leave the Russian union. The 1994 Budapest Memorandum was signed by Ukraine, Russia, the United States, and the United Kingdom. Under it, Ukraine agreed to give up the nuclear weapons in return for security guarantees. Russia violated this agreement when it supported separatist movements in Ukraine's Donbas region and subsequently invaded Ukraine in 2014 and again in 2022. The UK and the US are protecting international law by living up to the 1994 agreement. NATO expansion was and continues to be the result of decisions by sovereign nations to seek security against the threat of future Russian aggression from which they suffered following WW2. Does anyone in the West really think that NATO is an aggressive pact and will invade Russia. Ukraine is not blameless with regard to its treatment of its Russian-speaking minorities and it would have been better served by a federal government that provided linguistic and cultural protection to its Russian-speaking regions. However, in this conflict it is not a US puppet state nor the aggressor.
Read paragraph 5 of the Budapest Memorandum after the word "except" The country had no right to act in concert with one guarantor against another guarantor. In turn, Ukrainian President Yushchenko already in June 2008 asked the Secretary General for an action plan for joining NATO. He also proclaimed Bandera and Shukhevych as heroes of Ukraine. President Yanukovych cancelled these decrees. He was overthrown in 2014.
Those nukes weren't theirs to begin with, they were only on their territory, but they didn't have the codes and didn't have the means of maintaining them.
I am surprised how little knowledge has Jeffrey Sachs about the whole historical process and reasons of the war. And I am scared that such a narrow minded person pretends to be an authority in this topic. He takes only 20% of the whole view and tells this is the only reason of the whole situation. His view on the case is totally US-centric and thinks that the whole world is circulating around the US. By the way, with such attitude, US will easily loose the competition with China. There was no plan of US to expand NATO to the east and circulate Russia. The process of NATO expansion was initialized by countries from middle-eastern Europe. In fact at the beginning US and countries of western Europe were against it. Poland, Czech Republic and Hungary had to convince them that they could join NATO. Joining NATO was fully supported by the nations of middle-eastern Europe. After the previous 200 years experience with Russia they knew that Russia is just a rubbish state. They wanted to join the western countries zone which was richer and better organised. At that time middle-eastern Europe countries were several times poorer than western Europe countries. So the whole process of expanding of NATO just came from the desire of middle-eastern Europe countries to have better life and better future for themselves and for their children. Last 30 years of history has shown that this was the very good decision. Mr. Sachs should read some books about the whole region of middle-eastern and eastern Europe. Maybe he is a good economist, but definietely not a good geopolitics.
As far as I understand, you want to say that the US does not lead NATO and does not decide who will be a member? Then why did Putin offer to US Russia to join NATO, but the condition is that it has the same status as the US, and it was flatly rejected? And that the US-GB accidentally sends weapons to Ukraine and trains Ukrainian soldiers since 2013 because it wants peace and not war? You probably also think that this is not a game between the US and Russia, but between Ukraine and Russia?

Even if Baker told Gorbachev that NATO would "not move an inch to the East," it is absurd for Professor Sachs to treat this as some kind of eternal state of affairs. NATO is a defensive alliance that allows new members to join if they meet the criteria and if existing members agree. Such a process cannot simply be "stopped" arbitrarily. Baker had no authority to make such a promise, and Russia certainly understood this at the time. Moreover, a verbal statement is fundamentally different from a signed agreement, like the 1994 Budapest Memorandum, in which Ukraine, the USA, the UK, and Russia guaranteed Ukraine's security. Russia blatantly violated this agreement when it incited separatism in Eastern Ukraine and annexed Crimea in 2014, and later launched a full-scale brutal war in 2022. I find it baffling how this professor frames his arguments. Beating straw men and having very selective memory only undermines his credibility. Frankly, it makes him appear foolish. As an economist his grasp of international politics seems severely limited.
Well said, Prof.Sachs is good in his field as economist, doesn't mean he is knowledgable in term of international politics though. (English isn't my first language so there might be some mistakes in what I typed)

Agreed, He seems blind to the reality That Putin has attacked, without provocation, their innocent neighbor, and cannot admit he has made a terrible mistake.
I have deep admiration for the Ukrainian people. It's heartbreaking that the greed and selfishness of a few, not Russia, are destroying this beautiful nation.
Look at the movie doc. (ASP footage) How Russians goal in Mariupol were civilians and their infants dying in the hospital close to the first line. There were no soldiers or army devices just mother's children and old people.
Russia started the war against Ukraine and has had no problems sending missiles every day (bar about 7) across the time of this war and most of those missiles have been sent to apartments, shopping centres, schools, hospitals ... and Putin isn't greedy? He wants Ukraine's resources and its coastline so he has control of the Black Sea. Remembering that Putin had Ukrainian power targetted through the winter, and you see that it is not the selfishness of a few, but the egoism of the one that has brought about this situation.
This commentator says its all NATO's fault that Russia decided to attacked its neighbor, then why did Finland and Sweden join NATO and join very quickly ?
Simple. In geopolitical power-struggles between alliances, border states have two choices: 1)Joining a side, and having a reasonable expectation that any future conflict will be confined to the borders of their territory and that of the adversary. 2) Remaining neutral and having absolute certainty that a future conflict will be fought across the entirety of their territory. This certainty would have been pointed out clearly to the newly independent countries of Central / Eastern Europe by the original NATO countries when their membership of NATO was being solicited. It's what we call a 'Hobson's choice'- i.e.a choice made under duress. Finland and Sweden, being border states, are in exactly the same position.
He's a Putin stooge. Finland and Sweden changed their stance on NATO because they saw what Putin was doing. There are many flavors of imperialism. Sachs only opposes the US version.

In a bipartisan deal that one anti-war critic said demonstrates how thoroughly "broken and captured Washington is by the Pentagon," 219 House Democrats and 65 Republicans on Thursday voted to approve a budget agreement that includes $1.48 trillion in military spending over the next two years. Just 16 Democrats-including Reps. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) and Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.)-voted against the two-year, $2.7 trillion budget agreement. Largely due to expressed concerns about the deficit, 132 Republicans and Rep. Justin Amash (I-Mich.) also voted no. The final vote was 284-149. (See the full roll call.) The House passage of the budget deal, which President Donald Trump quickly applauded on Twitter as a victory for the military, comes after the Congressional Progressive Caucus threatened in April to tank the measure in opposition to its out-of-control Pentagon outlays.

Trump made his remarks while hosting Recep Tayyip Erdogan, just over a month after the Turkish president launched an offensive into north-eastern Syria.
Trump Says U.S. Troops Stayed in Syria 'Because I Kept the Oil' Jan. 15, 2020 At a Wisconsin rally on Tuesday, President Donald Trump lauded his decision to retain troops in eastern Syria to control oil fields there, despite warnings that such a move could constitute a war crime.
Sovereign countries have a right to meet the challenges of their own policies, have their own choice of alliances, and not be threatened by outside powers for doing so. It is ridiculously arrogant to think they have any less chance than any other country. If there were such an agreement made, it would be stupid to think it could never happen. Check your approval sources for this so called agreement as well as the signatories. Even if you had such a binding agreement, tearing it up is allways an option. 🎉 U
Donald Trump 'Very Proud' After Dropping 'Mother of All Bombs' on Afghanistan April 13, 2017 Donald Trump has said he was "very proud of" dropping the "mother of all bombs" on Afghanistan. US command used a cargo plane to drop the largest non-nuclear weapon ever used in combat by the American military in Nangarhar province near the Pakistan border - a remote area where members of an Isis affiliate were operating. White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer said the bomb targeted tunnels and caves Isis fighters used to "move around freely."
Zelensky didn't try to prevent the conflict through diplomacy because he lacks honor and integrity. In 2014 there was a coup. Soon after, there was a massacre in Odessa (dozens of people were burned alive). Ethnic Russians living in Ukraine were treated as subhuman. Their language and culture was being oppressed. A civil war broke out due to the rise in ethnic tensions. For 8 years the Ukrainian military was indiscriminately shelling civilians living in Donbas. If Zelensky honored the Minsk agreement and pledged neutrality, none of this would have happened. The 8 year civil war would have ended and Donbas would have remained part of Ukraine. War is the ultimate failure of diplomacy. Zelensky, Poroshenko, Merkel and Hollande admitted that Ukraine had no intention to honor the Minsk agreements. Who didn't want peace? Who advised against the 2022 peace talks in April? Hint: someone visited Zelensky in Kiev at that time Russia's national security was compromised once NATO began to expand eastwards. Russia clearly stated that Ukraine joining NATO was a red line (November 2021) and unfortunately this concern was never taken seriously. The Russians openly stated: if nothing changes, we will be forced to act in order to defend our national security. Enhancing the national security of one country at the expense of another is unacceptable. The Russians have legitimate security concerns. 20th September, 2021: Ukraine launched military drills with US and NATO. NATO is not a defensive alliance. NATO illegally bombed Yugoslavia (a direct violation of the U.N. Charter). We should never forget what they did to Libya, Afghanistan, Iraq etc. Who blew up the pipeline causing an environmental disaster? Zelensky banned all opposition and arrested a leading priest. Zelensky tried to invoke article 5 under false pretenses. Remember the incident in Poland. Ethnic Russians living in Ukraine were treated as subhuman. Their language and culture was being oppressed. Poroshenko said, “Our children will go to schools and kindergartens-theirs will hide in the basements”. Russians will never forget the 2014 Odessa massacre. The whole world needs to know about it. Why was Denis Kireev eliminated? He was a member of Ukraine's negotiating team during the peace negotiations. He wanted to help his country. Ukraine has a hit list. They target artists, journalists and ordinary citizens. Hundreds of children are on this list. 13 year old Faina Savenkova was placed on this list. Pink Floyd's Roger Waters is on this list. Jimmy Dore (American stand-up comedian, podcaster) and Aaron Maté (Canadian writer and journalist) are on this list. There is evidence that Ukrainian troops have been indiscriminately shelling civilians in Donbas (they used petal mines and targeted areas where there was no military presence). The azov troops trapped in the azovstal steelworks in Mariupol used human shields. They refused to allow civilians to leave despite of humanitarian corridors being present. Russia held a proposed cease fire in order for the civilians to leave, but azov would not allow the civilians to leave. Ukraine has committed many acts of terrorism (car bombs and other forms of assassination). Darya Dugina (journalist) R.I.P. The first terrorist attack on the Kerch bridge killed the truck driver and the individuals in the adjacent car (innocent civilian victims). The second terrorist attack on the Kerch bridge killed two parents and severely injured their young daughter. I have done a lot of research and it took me a long time to write this comment. I have stated a lot of facts and I have given my honest opinion. I have provided a brief summary of events that took place. In order to explain this whole situation in great detail, a book would need to be written. Hopefully someone will write an UNBIASED book, stating facts and allowing the readers to form their own judgments. Everything I said can be fact checked and verified.

What Sachs never mentions is the real cause of the US Cold War with Russia, he keeps saying the US wanted dominance but never says why, It's clear the US is doing the same thing with China, The US knows it can't go to war with those countries the reason is clear no one wins and everyone will die,

So we don’t promote freedom anymore just whatever you want to is fine. History is an inconvenient thing.
This inconvenient has a secret behind it
Proposal about Ukraine not joining NATO for 20 years just means 20 years for NATO to rearm Ukraine for next war.
Americans are there too, with NATO.

Gaydar treated Sachs advise literally and switched the system to capitalism overnight in a country in which nobody, but a few individuals had any idea about normal business.
对于西部对东部犯下的罪行 你就这样简单带过?🤣 乌克兰现政府就是美国傀儡 毋庸置疑
Read paragraph 5 of the Budapest Memorandum after the word "except"
The country had no right to act in concert with one guarantor against another guarantor.
That's correct only for western pro-Bandera regions.
Those nukes weren't theirs to begin with, they were only on their territory, but they didn't have the codes and didn't have the means of maintaining them.
Would your country silently accept RU bases near its borders? I don't think so.
Correct!
US has more than 800 miI. bases around the world and they are not for altruistic purposes.

DONALD TRUMP SAYS HE WAS BORN TO BE LOYAL TO ISRAEL
"The only [candidate] that's going to give real support to Israel is me. The rest of them are all talk, no action. They're politicians. I've been loyal to Israel from the day I was born. My father, Fred Trump, was loyal to Israel before me. The only one that's going to give Israel the kind of support it needs is Donald Trump."
~Donald Trump, May 9, 2015
Even if Baker told Gorbachev that NATO would "not move an inch to the East," it is absurd for Professor Sachs to treat this as some kind of eternal state of affairs.

Who sheIIed Donnbas since 2014?

'Unprecedented, Wasteful, and Obscene': House Approves $1.48 Trillion Pentagon Budget
July 26, 2019
"Wanna know how broken and captured Washington is by the Pentagon and the corruption of our nation's 'defense' budget? Well, look no further than the soon to be enacted budget 'deal.'"
(See the full roll call.)
The House passage of the budget deal, which President Donald Trump quickly applauded on Twitter as a victory for the military, comes after the Congressional Progressive Caucus threatened in April to tank the measure in opposition to its out-of-control Pentagon outlays.

Trump calls Afghanistan bombing a 'Very Successful Mission'
April 13, 2017
President Donald Trump said he is very proud of the U.S. military after what he called a "very, very successful mission."
Earlier, U.S. forces dropped the largest non-nuclear bomb on an ISIS tunnel complex in Afghanistan.
"Everybody knows exactly what happened and what I do is I authorize my military. We have the greatest military in the world and they've done their job as usual. So, we have given them total authorization," Trump said after meeting with first responders at the White House on Thursday.

Donald Trump 'Very Proud' After Dropping 'Mother of All Bombs' on Afghanistan
April 13, 2017
Donald Trump has said he was "very proud of" dropping the "mother of all bombs" on Afghanistan.
Hint: someone visited Zelensky in Kiev at that time
Russia's national security was compromised once NATO began to expand eastwards.
