There are 60 million downloads of the Pocket game. Even if a small number turns into collecting physical cards, that will drive the prices up. I am one of the new collectors.
Yeahhh. My bad man. I mean I def would’ve gotten into the hobby eventually because I’ve been wanting too. But the tcg pocket game really pushed me into it. My bad bro
When surging sparks got released I got back into Pokemon. I haven’t collected anything since the end of XY. It’s bringing back not only concurrent, but also new and old collectors. Although expensive, I’m happy to see that Pokemon is still doing well. I thought after XY it would all go downhill but I was wrong.
I got back into collecting since around 2001 and was pulled in with 151. Don’t know much about the Pokémon beyond there so I simply just buy the cards I think look cool and cards of the Pokémon I like regardless of their sets or anything. I like ripping packs but it makes so much more financial sense to just buy the individual cards I want instead of trying to get lucky.
Agreed Jake, part of the mania is collector's looking for evolving skies in S&V as well. Some say it is Surging Sparks, some say Prismatic, the reality it's likely none of them. But, because people think the next Evolving skies could be fill in the blank, these booster boxes are just getting expensive! We constantly have people pumping up previous sets saying they're underrated which fuels the purchases of booster boxes.
Thanks for all of the good information! I also would rather see the raw prices of cards pictured. I think the days of showing only psa 10 prices are behind us for now.
Brick and mortars stores are hurting for foot traffic and most big box stores are exclusively stocking in their physical stores and not online. I just like getting it online because its easier than to drive over ... look for product, waste gas, wait in line , wait in traffic and then get home. it's like work lol
dude I just recently got back into collecting cards and I can not believe you are the first person I’ve seen point out that PTCGP is part of the reason for this recent boom
I came back a year late since I saw a tik tok about 151 packs. Now I realize those packs are impossible with scalpers. Older people like me came back for that set and brought back old fans
@@TimeMachineTCG Yeah but even then we're still paying way more, I always hear Americans talking about booster boxes being expensive at $100, that's still only $157 AUD, booster boxes are never that cheap here unless they are utter failure sets that suppliers are desperate to offload.
I'm a new collector, not sure if PTCGP alone would have made me one, but the double whammy of it and TCG Simulator with the no longer available Pokemon mod certainly did.
Hey @TwicebakedJake, I was wondering if you would recommend some scarlet and violet set to pick up long term. I know you say that it should be at least 2 years to wait to pick up modern card pokemon sets. But perhaps paldea evolved is 1 and half years old and it still can be picked up for very good price so I was wondering if that would be the good choice.
i am so happy that i am only here for collecting not for some investment things. prismatic is sold out, who cares in some months it gets reprinted and then ill get my stuff to open up or ill stick with future sets. i dont get the fomo stuff, just wait some weeks and you good to go
I'll say I'm new, but I did do collecting when I was younger, the last set I collected from was the fossil set then my cards got stolen and I stopped collecting til this year
This is bad for hobby. Besides, its difficult to get kids to hobby if starting the Pokemon is too high or expensive. In addition we came to age of Scalpers which is not good.
Honestly this is a good thing I wouldn’t want to get kids started on this shit. It’s a gambling addiction. I must have spent at least 10 000 since starting in 2018
How much more expensive is it going through Gamestop to get cards graded, compared to doing it yourself at home on the PSA website and sending it to them? Roughly?
Because there are people with connections to card shops that can get the product before anyone else at a much cheaper price … a dude that vending locally had a ton of surging sparks cases 2 weeks before release
Got back in with crown zenith and 151 and ironically may get back out with crown zenith and 151 as well. When you cant even go to a store and buy an ETB at retail price its frankly ridiculous. Surging sparks ETBs up to $150. Mini tins being scalped for $30. F that. At that point I may as well just buy whatever singles I want rather than spending more than retail to rip packs.
I think what we are seeing is only the beginning. I think the real fun starts around the end of January or early February next year. That will probably propel prices into the 30th anniversary and its gonna be insane. I just wish people would stop all the complaints about what's "bad for the hobby". People need to realize investors, collectors, newbies etc. Are all part of the hobby and even flippers are as well. Accept it. Get over it. Pay the market value or wait but you might be waiting for forever.
I think it’s highly disingenuous to say psa 10 copy, I know raw cards are all over the place with condition, but you can just say a near mint copy. I think your trying to play it up by saying a psa 10 imo
Agreed on picking up the JP singles if the enlgish single is cost more. Was able to pick up the Machamp v alt art pristine 10 for $74 compared to english raw for $130.
this is a cvoid like market without cvoid like circumstances fueling it. personally i think this is just a massive bubble we are in and it will burst within a year. the cvoid market lasted for around 2 years but that was only because the circumstances during cvoid prevented tpc from printing enough cards to drown the scalpers. this is not the case in this market and while it may take tpc a few months to adjust their print numbers to meet current demand, it will happen and it will scare all the scalpers out of the hobby just like it did when they upped their print numbers near the end of 2021.
There was a similar occurrence in the 40K hobby when a fanmade series called Astartes was released on RUclips. That slice of perfection opened the floodgates and people poured into the hobby, whether they were new to the world of Warhammer or were returning. The TCG app has brought a load of people over to the Pokemon hobby in a similar way, but those people will slowly filter back out again ove the coming months. It happened with 40K and it'll happen here too. I know people that have recently gotten into the hobby, (even though they used to call me a nerd for collecting lol), who are already frustrated with the prices. It won't last.
I'm not saying that didn't happen with 40k, huge fan myself. But Pokemon is the highest grossing franchise in history, its'a part of many childhoods across the world and accessible for all ages. I'm not saying it will last forever, but it will have more staying power.
@HeyUncleV I just don't think so. Happy to be proven wrong, though. There are good parts to so much hype in a hobby we love. But it all just feels like hype. Artificial, if that makes sense. And I don't agree with the translation from digital to physical cards.
The price of the ralts is much like the Magikarp it has a very low PSA 10 population as its very hard to grade most of them are off center so its definitely an outlier
Jake, I hear a lot of people complain about scalpers. I get it - everyone likes to have a chance at product. But what are your thoughts on these rip n ship live streamers? They probably buy up more product than scalpers and then proceed to make profit on their streams. Personally I have no problem with scalpers or streamers, but it’s annoying for the streamers to condemn the scalpers.
Sealed product market is very healthy, still loads of stuff at under MSRP. Singles market on the other hand is what I'd describe as the largest asset bubble in world history. SO many cards that I believe will be 95% cheaper after the economy corrects. This Surging Sparks Pikachu is the craziest thing I've ever witnessed in this hobby. That card is extremely weak, and selling for I think is 15-20X what it'll be worth in just a few months. I see that being the posterchild for a coming graded single crash.
Lol. i started collecting Pokemon Cards because, of that TCGP...really want to get the Terastal Festival EX but the price is extremely high right now. its ridiculous, lol.
I think you tubers saying “prices are going up” is creating a quite fomo. Ik RUclipsrs are saying don’t get fomo but it’s still creates a quite version of one. Asking why definitely seems like a better approach then talking about how it’s going to the moon rn
Psa grading system has always been widely available to everybody, this has nothing to do with GameStop having this new option in their business. And No, Pokemon TCG pocket has not SIGNIFICANTLY push the hobby. Rip and ship apps as well as investing RUclipsrs have been pushing this hobby towards the scope of a business/investment rather than Pokemon TCG pocket. This video gives me the idea you live in a bubble in that room.
The problems is a card's raw value is all over the place. A base set Charizard could be $100 or $10,000 depending on condition. So I'm not sure, should I put $100 on the screen or $10,000.
@@TwicebakedJakePSA 10 graded is the universal standard. I would say keep including that price in your videos. I agree, raw card prices are all over the place.

Depreciation means loss of value. The Dollar increased in value compared to the Euro and even more compared to the Yen. Your money is worth more, so imported goods from those places should be cheaper, not more expensive. Not that they would pass it on to customers. The problem here is demand and especially scalpers.

2025 is likely to be full blown mania - Evo/Team Up/Team Rocket/B&W 156, all during rate cuts/BTC post halving year/alt season
