@Art yeah that was the 80s mentality my dad is into.
It was a reaction against 70s highbrow culture. The journalists were saying that if you aren't thinking about your fans then you are being selfish because your customers keep you in business.
I agree with you wholeheartedly;. Kate Bush is far too classy to engage in that kind of criticism..

Exactly! Madonna has never gotten involved in that sort of thing either. They love to pit women, especially, against other women.
that was never Kate’s style.
Also, she wouldn’t be so mean-spirited as to correct this presenter but the use of sex and sexuality was /always/ part of Kate’s music and art, right from the very beginning.
So the ‘highbrow’ /‘lowbrow’ contrast that he is attempting to present is as reductive as it is meaningless.
Kate does not reciprocate in this foolishness.
I could listen to Kate talk all day…she is exactly as you imagined, ethereal, mysterious, innocent, just so interesting and obviously unique. I like the way she tries to keep out of shot right at the end too 😂

Love Kate. Been a fan since late 1980. When I saw Wuthering Heights on a tv show on Nickelodeon pre-MTV. Hounds Of Love is a sublime album. I still have mine on vinyl from back in the day. Sadly she never got much air play over here in the U.S.

I have stories as well-My friend Fraser him and his family's GP was Kate's dad Robert Bush who worked in South East London in Plumstead. And we used to speak to him loads when he finished work or when we was in Kent in Bexleyheath,Welling, Dartford, Swanley, Chislehurst, Orpington etc, on our bikes.
He sometimes gave us a lift back to Kent from Plumstead-Such a nice man! + sometimes said hello to Hannah as well and she would make us massive jug of orange squash + met Kate/Del Palmer few times etc
Great memories I will always cherish!
I am from Kent here too.... She was a neighbour of a close friend of mine, who always said that she was kind, and down to earth - she is about 12- 13 years older than us, and he saw her as a kind of older sister, genuine and kind.

@@mikekaraoke Sadly my friend died a few years ago (cystic fibrosis). My family are from Bromley, but i now live in central London. The nearest I got to meeting Kate Bush was seeing her live in 2014. I feel so fortunate to have seen and heard her perform.

Of course the last album was away from the ‘mainstream’. Every Kate Bush album is away from the mainstream. She’s Kate F*****g Bush! Richard Bloody Skinner, honestly.
Well... actually, "The Dreaming" went to #3 in the UK and that week the albums that were on top were a compilation of various artists and a soundtrack, so it became the #1 studio album in the UK in that week. To put a comparison in context: Caroline Polachek, who is an artist with certain characteristics similar to Kate in today's world, has not even had an album in the top 20. So Kate Bush was still mainstream with that album.

Kate Bush and Madonna are the same age. Imagine if Madonna's first album also came out in 1978. Anyway, Kate is untouchable and amazing. She doesn't need to court controversy in order to sell records. But each to their own.
I love that Kate didn't use that opportunity to tear Madonna down like the interviewer wanted her to. She kept things classy and was respectful towards Madonna.
One of the reasons I admire Kate so much, besides her music, is that she never wanted to be a celebrity. She's an artist in every sense.

No one said Kate Bush was the queen of pop (well, perhaps outside the UK), no matter how official, or unofficial, the rankings are. I was just comparing two same-aged female singers who have had very good commercial success and their differing methods for achieving it.

Kate Bush above knew that Stranger Things Season 4 Part II in July 2022 will feature Hounds of Love so she's not worried that it slipped to number 2 back in the charts in the 80s.
But what episode do you think it will be in the 8th or 9th??

Thats hilarious, the interviewer says "madonna is going a different way from you, she's going for the sex appeal", and Kate just smiles at him like "thanks a *&^%ing lot". Not that people should be judged on their image (god help us comparing Phil Collins and Neil Young based on looks) but in my books Kate Bush has sex appeal pretty much wrapped up. And when she sings Song of Solomon, come on. Nothing against Madonna although the guy who wrote 'like a virgin' (yeah, a man wrote it) tells a pretty unflattering story about how a singer treated the person that made them rich and famous. She was pretty much the definition of style over substance. Hell, just Kate Bush's lips have more sex appeal here than Madonna. But then to each their own. The 'substance' has pretty much been proven in spades.
People are still listening to Kate Bush's songs... "Like A Virgin" only comes on a re-live the 80s shows or Heart FM. No one is seeking it out to listen to the lyrics or musical layers. "Running up that Hill" blew my mind as a teen... now it's doing the same for my kids thanks to Netflix.

Personally i think Bush is one of the most underrated artists in Britain.
Its a fact that most of the young teenagers on Council Estates nowadays (both Black and White) have never heard of her.
Aside from her Rodney Trotter personna which (incidentally seems a bit fake) i would say that Bush is a super talented singer and an amazing dancer.
She is one of the greatest stand alone artists this country has ever produced.

Have you never seen the interview where she says she can't relate to most of what's in the charts? What does that tell you? Why should someone finding little value in things that don't reflect their values be called 'snobbish'? Ray of Light, Madonna's finest hour, is as close to art as Madonna could hope to get (American Life also contains some very interesting work) but at her peak she only comes close to the weakest Kate Bush album The Red Shoes.
Something you wouldn't notice at the time but is blatantly obvious now is the terrible structuring and unnaturally forced questioning, comes across as more of an interrogation than a relaxed interview/conversation from people genuinely interested. Real hostile environment.
