I agree with you. It gives me goosebumps. But it isn't just an off-the-shelf addition. Last word I have is that it is a Hancock Long Bell 3-chime steam whistle, which is what she was equipped with in the 1940's until she was retired and donated in 1962. When she was donated the original whistle was removed and replaced by an off-the-shelf stand-in. This particular whistle was acquired from a private collector in 2011 but was placed on the UP 4-8-4 locomotive #844 until 2022 when it was moved over to the 4014.
Old saying: "The Penalties For Mistakes Can Be Severe And Messy!" (i.e. a few 1,000s of pounds of locomotive and cars (even if the cars are empty) won't notice running over somebody's foot or even their torso....)
@thunderbird1921 most railroad right of way is 25 feet out from center of track. This can change from railroad to railroad and depending on territory and surroundings.
Well Said. God forbid there be an accident/incident that forces the railroads to curtail these amazing activities. People really need to be mindful of their actions. Much love and respect to all the heritage crews!!!
It's there to assist incase of emergency or something goes wrong with the 4014. Then they can clear the main line without holding alot of other trains up.
What’s some people do not understand is standing near the tracks. You may get hit with a brake shoe that fell off or other pieces of crap. I’ve seen it happen.
An open container door means that it was either in Los Angeles or Chicago. Any time they are passing a container train from either city, they have to watch for such a hazard.
They do have the 4015 assigned to the steam team, the trucks are even painted silver, but it must have needed some work done on it because it didn’t come through Ft. Worth with the Big Boy, it had the 9625 seen in this video with it when it came up from Houston.
@@Tim.NavVet.EN2 I’m curious as to where the “L” came from since the 4014 diesel locomotive was UP 4014 up until the day before the Big Boy was renumbered (officially) from UPP 4014 to UP 4014 in 2019. UP 4014 Diesel was renumbered UP 4479 on that day and doesn’t exist anymore.
Up until very recently 4014 didn't have the electronics needed for a mainline locomotive. The diesel used to provide that as well as braking (less wear and tear on 4014).
They have said they will be switching passenger cars for freight cars along the way. This gives somewhat of a Glimpse as to what it would have looked like to see Big Boy pulling freight trains although in my opinion it doesn't look to go. These 4 cars are the Locomotive and crew support cars so they have to stay with 4014
Hidden message??? I take it you’re not from the US, this is Union Pacific’s executive train 4014 is pulling on a tour across the Union Pacific rail system. Unlike other countries we’re actually proud of our flag & proud to display it. Union Pacific has always featured the US flag on its equipment, including on regular locomotives and rolling stock.
The hidden message? 😅it's a company and this steam engine is our mascot so to speak. People want to see a clean locomotive. Trust me, if they want to see a dirty one all they have to do is wait for the next one. It's on a tour, of course the higher ups want a clean train. The flags? Well you see we live in the USA and we have federal and state. The big boy will display the American flag as well as the state it's traveling through on the front of the locomotive. So, in closing....lay off the pot.
In addition, not all of the cars have fresh paint, a good many of those cars have paint approaching 30 years old or maybe older on them, a few are faded pretty bad. Edit: Look at the first yellow water canteen behind the locomotive tender and then look how faded the paint on the second water canteen is, there’s a big difference when seen in person.
Great catch. Thanks.
Sweet Jesus, that whistle sings a symphony to my soul!!!
Check out my video of it leaving Watseka IL . 20 SECOND LONG WHISTLES 😍

That’s always a trip to see the flames down in the middle of a steam loco. 4014 is especially visible!
My Grandpa was a section gang man for the Union Pacific in central Nebraska from 1931 to 1971. He always preached safety around the rails.

@@Tim.NavVet.EN2 Grandpa said he had to walk along the tracks with a 5 gallon bucket picking up pieces of people after they’d been hit by a train.
Everyone, Stay 25 Feet back from the tracks, as the Union Pacific Railroad requires. It is for your safety.
It's crazy. If you're on the gravel, you're trespassing!

Sure glad for the account of the open door. Thank you
THE DOOR AT ONE TIME, MAY HAVE BEEN-PROPERLY SECURED ,
BUT WAS RAIDED BY AN PRE DELIVERY PORCH PIRATE!!
KEEP THEM ROLLING BROTHERS!!
👍👍
That’s the first thing you do in Chicago. Start checking everybody for open doors.
Facts.... I'm from Joliet... 😅
@2:25 watch the firebox flaming underneath !!
That train got the disappearing railroad blues ,,,
That's awesome !!!
Glad they managed to stop
Why was the container train stopped across the crossing? I love that whistle
And here’s everybody’s reminder why we stand back from the right of way lol

Does the diesel electric engine pull any load at all or is it just free rolling?
Free roll
It's only use now is to help with braking
It's there to assist incase of emergency or something goes wrong with the 4014. Then they can clear the main line without holding alot of other trains up.
@Paul070 when was the last time 4014 had an accident?
@infaredxkingz8786 other then hitting a tree (wasn't badly damaged) I don't really think it has. At least one where the diesel needed to take over
Frickin' people!! Hobo Shoestring would have never done anything like that, what's wrong with people today? smh
Probably looting items out of it earlier. Happens all the time. Sad.

We were at the next crossing, wondering why it had stopped!

As I lay my head on the railroad tracks waiting for the General Lee ,,, This taunt dont run by here no more ,,, poor pitiful me ...
where was the rest of the train for the 4014?
Why is that door open...?
somebody stealing stuff.
Savvy photo op set up.
Wish, they had L4014 (Diesel Electric) run with "S"4014!

@@ralfie8801 L4014 was the Diesel-Electric that pushed (steam) 4014 to the Repair shop for her rebuild...

I know. 4884 pulled it. But now 4015 is permanently assigned to the steam crew.
@@ralfie8801 During part of the trip it was a Diesel Electric #L4014 (publicity shots since the big boy's number was also 4014)

This makes no sense, how is there a diesel-electric with 4014 just hauling 4 cars? They're literally light as Styrofoam compared to 4014
Up until very recently 4014 didn't have the electronics needed for a mainline locomotive. The diesel used to provide that as well as braking (less wear and tear on 4014).
Where is the rest of the train? Should of Ben 11 coaches in total, only saw 4 here
Was wondering the same thing, then they added some cool box cars somewhere after this sighting that I wish I would have gotten to see

removed and moved to Council Bluffs where most of the passenger car fleet is housed and maintained
