I know that LavenderTowne mentions it, but I, someone who does photography for a hobby, need to shed more light on it. The burn tool is awful for art. The burn tool was made for photography, and it fits exactly for photography. The burn tool is supposed to be used as a way to contrast colours to make a photo have more of a personality. That is why the burn tool doesn't just make it darker, but also makes it more saturated. The burn tool is not, and never will be, good for drawing use. Okay, rant over.
Zoomspilo Well the burn and dodge tools were used in film photography before anything else. It was used to bring out darker or lighter colors to manipulate the image by focusing the light into certain areas. Back then you couldn't just put it in photoshop. But you are exactly right, using the burn and dodge effects make your drawing look flat and lazy. It's a clear sign for someone who doesn't know how to use the program.
I just need to say, you are my biggest inspiration. And I'm not just saying that to be nice. I literally watch your videos all the time, and whenever my friends ask me who my favorite art RUclipsr is, I say "LavenderTowne!" without hesitation. @Carl The Meatgrinder well for starters I recommend finding *something* If you don’t know, you would need to find something you like that you want to practice first. Is it faces? Anime? Realistic? You got to pick atleast one for now. You won’t know how to draw if you don’t know what you want. It makes me so happy that you use Amarante's music in your videos, it sounds so lovely under your voice and they're really under-appreciated. I also really love this video and it comes at a very good time. For a while, I did only flat colors in my art because I thought it looked better. In reality, I just didn't know how to do shading in a way that looked nice while still being effective and quick. I've been trying to do more shading recently and I'm happy this video came out when it did, because it gave me a lot of good advice on how to shade quickly and in a way that looks beautiful. Your art is always so adorable and you're such an inspiration of mine, not to mention the fact that your "do this, not that" videos are a freaking life-saver. Thank you so much for this video and every other one, you're an incredible inspiration to me and I hope you never stop drawing.
Oml yes, I've been struggling with shading for so long now. and this helped me so much. my art's been improving alot faster since I started watching you. you help me so much, thank you
I just tried the one @ 7:31 and OMG IT'S SO MUCH EASIER! I used to just, "okay the lights sorta over there... just shade where something overlaps... every part has shading now..." But I used that, because the piece I'm working on has someone in the woods with a cigarette. So the majority of the light is coming from the cigarette, now I'm just going farther and adding shadows to help further the dimensions. So I have the light areas, the "mid/normal" area, and the shadows. This was so much easier. You are a blessing, and saved my sanity
IT'S HIGH NOOT hehe, This was really helpful. Lately I've had some trouble of where shades go and this was my light in the dark. Thank you Lavendertowne :3
This may be just me but when I shade the hair I use the complimentary color of the hair color (I would only recommend doing this if you have a cartoony style and an unnatural hair color for your character) it may look weird at the start but once you add highlights it will tie everything together
I know I'm late but I just wanna say how much your work has helped me and encouraged me to keep drawing. In your "Do This Not That" videos you often talk about amateur mistakes that you used to make, but because I've been watching your videos I have been spared from making these mistakes. I often think of giving up, to stop drawing because family doesn't support me or how different the picture I made compared to the one in my head looked, but then, if watch videos like yours I'm reminded that you can improve, and you doing these tutorials just proves that. Thank you, for being such a huge inspiration in my life.
I realized I actually did my shading the hard way; the one where you choose a darker color, and it does seriously take a looooooong time. I'll take your advice and try the 3D shading. :D
I thought it would be cool if lavender drew in vivziepops art style, or did a line art swap because vivzie pop has really sharp lines and lavender and really nice circle lines.
This video was really helpful to me, as I have a really hard time figuring out how to light and shade as I normally have really irregularly shaped character designs and I find difficulty in how the light affects everything. Lavender, I love your videos and they've really helped me develop as an artist, thank you so much for creating them!
this has helped me a lot, and I'm only nine minutes into the video. I know how shading works when it comes to where the light source is and where to draw it, I just didn't know how to go about drawing it. I normally don't watch tutorial videos when it comes to drawing because I prefer to learn at my own pace, but your tutorials are SUPER helpful.
this is one of your most usefull videos you have done shading is one of the hardest things to learn in art so thanks for this video and i can't say this enough but your art is amazing
Oh wow; Thank you so much! This was extremely helpful as 3:43 looks exactly like one of my drawings and you have shown me how to improve from my original shading style. 10/10!
some youtubers just deserve much more fame than they have you are one of them . you gave me a huge inspiration for my drawing style and I'm thankful to you .
This series makes me so happy because just,, I learn so much more?? which is obviously the point lmao but sometimes I do a certain thing while drawing that I can't figure out and you just help me to perfect it, so thank you!!
I literally could not grasp lighting and shading until your video!! Thank you so much it makes so much sense now, as a visual learner this is invaluable.
Thank you so much. Ive always found that shading is my biggest weakness! When sketching with pencils its fine but in digital art I just cant figure out what I'm doing. Big help, thanks Lavender!

Thank goodness. I'm always blown away by the beautiful cell shading lavender Towne uses and I'm actually pretty bad at shading in my own art. This video is a life saver.
Yesh! Thanks so much for this vid! I really needed this! I get the way I shade from how you normally shade - the blocked in shading (cell shading?), but this video shows way more ways to shade my art!
DooodleTheNoodle It's called Cel-shading, so you were correct. I believe The Wind Waker uses a similar (if not the same) technique, so that's really cool!
I tend to shade *badly* in that all of my drawings have the same light source. The skin is always shaded below the chin and below the bangs. I don't know why but I always assume the light is coming from directly above and I want to learn how to make lighting from different angles. This tutorial will definitely help me though, thank you for making this video
All of these videos have helped me improve my art so much! Thank you! Also, I have adopted your "one color shading" style. Plus, that dramatic, only-erase-where-the-light-is-shining technique I use for really dramatic pictures (and they end up being some of my best work)
Okay, I literally just read all of Unfamiliar in one sitting... I’ve been subscribed for a while now LavenderTowne, and I never bothered to read the web comic. I regret not doing it sooner. I love the characters and the storyline, can’t wait for more!
@Carl The Meatgrinder can you please keep your mad thoughts to yourself next time ;-; trust me I've had plenty if times where I've wanted to yell at someone
wow ok, i'm glad I saw this cause i was stuck doing that technique where i pick a different shade color for every individual color in the picture and it was taking me FOREVER. so the tip is to pick a pop-y color, not gray, and shade on top using multiply. will try this.

Thank you LavenderTowne for single-handedly saving my art.

Me: TEACH ME YOUR WAYS ART SHADING SENPAI
Oml yes, I've been struggling with shading for so long now. and this helped me so much.
my art's been improving alot faster since I started watching you. you help me so much, thank you
you're my art teacher
funnybunny and mangle r *you're
tourmaline thanks i fixed it
can you make a video on perspectives?
peachy apricot Yes! I suck at that
That would be really useful
peachy apricot I am struggling with that as well haha! Please make this video, lavender ♥.
Yes!! I'm so bad at perspective, it's what messes me up the most
as-warm-as-choco.tumblr.com/post/128771179533/a-master-post-of-thomas-romains-art-tutorials
This should help with perspective on buildings and humans
Me: I always wake up at high noon-
Mcree: ITS HIIIIIIGH NOON
Also..*violently high fives screen* TOP OF THE MORNIN' TO YA LADDIES!
This is very useful! And I must say using the light source from beneath was super fun for me when I used it in my drawing (the one in my profile pic)
I like your art ! You're really talented
If you draw McCree allways draw the sun above him because for him it's allways HIGH NOON
IT'S HIGH NOOT
hehe, This was really helpful.
"Straight up at high noon"
*Shows a pic of McCree*

WAIT WHAT RIGHT WHEN I SAW THIS COMMENT SHE SAID IT :O
Lavandertowne: *shows a picture of Mcree.
Me: *instantly Likes the video.
this has helped me a lot, and I'm only nine minutes into the video. I know how shading works when it comes to where the light source is and where to draw it, I just didn't know how to go about drawing it. I normally don't watch tutorial videos when it comes to drawing because I prefer to learn at my own pace, but your tutorials are SUPER helpful.
this is one of your most usefull videos you have done shading is one of the hardest things to learn in art so thanks for this video
and i can't say this enough but your art is amazing
Oh wow; Thank you so much! This was extremely helpful as 3:43 looks exactly like one of my drawings and you have shown me how to improve from my original shading style. 10/10!
Hey lavendertowne!, you've helped me with digital drawing alot but could you do a "how to draw/shade clothes" sort of video?
I love how she said "smoother" and then "roundier" instead of rounder :3
some youtubers just deserve much more fame than they have you are one of them . you gave me a huge inspiration for my drawing style and I'm thankful to you .
This series makes me so happy because just,, I learn so much more?? which is obviously the point lmao but sometimes I do a certain thing while drawing that I can't figure out and you just help me to perfect it, so thank you!!
I HAVE BEEN SUMMONED BY THE NOTIFICATIONS (but I was already on youtube anyways)
Mysterious Person omg same
Mysterious Person legit me

Mysterious Person early no notifications tho :/
I literally could not grasp lighting and shading until your video!! Thank you so much it makes so much sense now, as a visual learner this is invaluable.
The title is such a mood when it comes to beginners. PLS- WHY DOES ALMOST EVERYONE DO THAT WHEN THEY FIRST START-
I've been long awaiting this video! I'm only halfway through and it's already helped me so much! This is hands down my favorite series of yours!
Thank you so much. Ive always found that shading is my biggest weakness! When sketching with pencils its fine but in digital art I just cant figure out what I'm doing. Big help, thanks Lavender!
Thank you! That was actually really helpful! (the drawings also looked amazing)
"unless your straight up like High noon *shows Mccree* "
I see what you did therr
Even though this video is old it still helped me figure out how to do the mix of soft and hard brush shading I see and like a lot, so thank you
can you do a video on perspective?
I thought the video said, "DRAW THIS, NOT SHAT" Also I love your videos. XD
I am NOT early. I just got here a few minutes after it was posted.

Thank goodness. I'm always blown away by the beautiful cell shading lavender Towne uses and I'm actually pretty bad at shading in my own art. This video is a life saver.
Haley: Her eyes and her hair on the glossiest parts of her.
Me: So she just has really greasy hair?
Thats were the most light hits
@@anajaquez3441 well yeah, but like, the greasier the hair the more shiny it looks so
@@zhongli9073 I mean, you're probably not wrong
I haven't heard of planchette showering in the comic yet 😂
*y e p*
Her house doesn’t seem to have a shower..
Ur videos have helped me so much become the artist I am today thank you
I love the characters and the storyline, can’t wait for more!
all these are sooooo helpful!!! could you do one on eyes, or maybe backgrounds.
edit: also perspective and sketching would be suuper helpful as well.
Chill
@Carl The Meatgrinder can you please keep your mad thoughts to yourself next time ;-; trust me I've had plenty if times where I've wanted to yell at someone
@Carl The Meatgrinder Why are you so annoyed? She's just trying to help people and there is also lots of comments who say it helped them
@Carl The Meatgrinder Why are you watching this video?
@Carl The Meatgrinder maybe not for you, but for others, it does.
Thank you! I've really needed some pointers on shading.
YOU
ARE
AWESOME!!!
You have helped me understand lighting. Just like yussssss
thank you! thank you! thank you!
High noon made me subscribe this. May the sun be above you.
wow ok, i'm glad I saw this cause i was stuck doing that technique where i pick a different shade color for every individual color in the picture and it was taking me FOREVER. so the tip is to pick a pop-y color, not gray, and shade on top using multiply. will try this.
Yeah that's how I shade, I'm gonna try her way on my next piece.
Well, i am just going to just let that unoriginal comment be and stop being childish about it. Now that i stopped nagging around i am going to give Feedback about the actual Video: *I have been mostly struggeling with shading and your video really helped me out. It's clear to follow and is really helpful. I saw a lot of shading and light Videos and this one is the best for beginners like me. Thank you very much for this Video and don't stop Posting DRAW THIS, NOT THAT! :)*
spartan rifle omg same
Side OfInsanity lol, yeah
I just had that exact thought with your comment
Don't we all...
I bet you saw another comment saying that.
Thank you SOOOO MUCH for these videos you've helped me improve my art a lot! Keep doing what you're doing!
I ditched a Gaming Video as soon as I saw this!!! I can't wait for the rest of this video! *grins insanely and stares at screen*
*so me*
6:06 there’s a “color the hole area” tool?
I can’t even describe how angry at myself I am right now, know this tool would have saved days of drawing
A fill
My style of shading is basically this: Use a multitude of colors to shade unless it's monochrome.
