First timer here. Going to be working for American Cruiselines and this was super helpful! Thanks!
Congrats! Let us know how it goes.
very informative... Joining a cruise in a months time. Joining as stage crew
Right on, I'm glad you found the video helpful. Good luck and feel free to let us know how it goes!
All your videos are incredibly helpful ... great insights into cruise ship crew needs especially for the first timers! Awesome!!!
Please excuse my ridiculously long delay in responding (apparently just being notified of this comment now). It is my pleasure- hopefully the cruise work is going well for you!
You give a lot of good advice. Thank you
I'm glad you're enjoying the videos.
Advice from a former airplane employee regarding weight. When you get to the airport, go to an empty check in counter and weigh your luggage. If you are close on a bag, a pair of jeans is about one pound, move it to your carry on and then check in without being "that person."
Thanks for the advice!
Thank you so much for this! Just accepted an offer to move from gas carriers to cruise ships and I'm currently freaking out about a. what to pack and b. the fact there will be significantly more than 25 people on the entire ship.
Glad it was helpful. You'll probably have a little more fun working on a cruise ship.
Informative and fun video,ty.
My pleasure. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
That Skateboard reminds me of a Old HOBIE plastic board!
I’m already packed and I leave for my contract on May 28th 😂
Congrats! Be sure to get back to us at some point and let us know how it's going. If it's easier you can reach me directly at: harpoon2021@gmail.com if you have any other questions.
Did this help you narrow things down? Anything I left out? Have a specific question or want me to elaborate more on something?
Please let me know, I'd love to hear your feedback!
Glad I could help. Congrats on the job! Which position and company will you be working?
Also, thanks for subscribing! I'll be uploading more videos for Cruise Ship Crew soon.
Ah, Gotcha. I worked in the Entertainment Department but also have plenty of info on the majority of the positions on board. So, if you have any questions or need some assistance, don't hesitate to email me directly at this channel's email: harpoon2021@gmail.com . I'd be happy to help in any way I can.
Coat hangers???? What are your thoughts I've been told to take some 🤷♀️🤷♀️🤷♀️🤷♀️
Thank you for this! Many laughs and many shared opinions
My pleasure. I'm glad you enjoyed it!
@@workoncruiseship I have been binge watching all of your videos- thank you for all of the helpful information. I am about to start my first contract on a cruise and I was wondering if you could help me out with your input with a few specific items to bring? (I should also mention that I will be flying from the US to Europe to get to my ship)
Are the first two provided on the boat or should I be bringing my own?
1. Bed Pillows
2. Blankets/sheets
3. Salt Lamp (Random, I know) but love in my current home
4. Steamer for clothing - would this be considered a fire danger?
5. Electric Kettle (obsessed with hot drinks, teas, coffee)- would this also be considered a fire danger?
Thank you so much!
@@JoBearize Congrats on your first contract!
1 & 2 - They do provide these, however, I noticed some still bring one pillow (a little more fluffy) and a small blanket to remind them of home.
3 - Nope, they won't allow it. I'd look into other electronic lamps (mood temperature lamps, etc...) instead.
4 - Nope. This is one of the main things women complain about not being able to bring.
5 - Definite nope. Coffee is hit or miss but there's always somewhere to get hot water on the ship except during the hours of maybe 2am - 5:30am.
@@workoncruiseship Thank you for all of your help and for taking the time to answer my questions, it is SO appreciated! Hope all is well
@@JoBearize Anytime. Lemme know if you have any other questions and I would be more than happy to help. You can also reach me at the email for this channel: harpoon2021@gmail.com
Great videos very helpful unlike the emails the employing agent sent out especially the clothing / packing list ! I was meant to start my first contract for Royal as underwater (Aqua) stage crew just before the pandemic hit so now waiting for a vaccine to re-start (start?!?) my contract . Back to the clothing list , it states that I need two suits / dress wear / formal wear . I'm not a small chap and suits weigh a ton. Do I really need posh clothes as a tech ? In fact here is the full list ...
Leatherman (multi tools) (tool belt) Optional
Flashlight Optional
3-5 plain black polo shirts
2-3 pairs of khaki shorts (optional)
2-3 pairs of plain black jeans or cargo pants
1 pair Black “skid-free” shoes AND 1 pair White shoes ... Do they mean trainers ???? Steel toe caps ??? Boots ???
Several pairs of all black shoes / several pairs of all white socks ... Again trainers ??????
Plain black board shorts and Water shoes (Aqua Divers only)
Cruise, Youth, Sports Staff:
1 pair of jeans
1 pair Black “skid-free” shoes White Sneakers
1 pair black dress shoes
PJ’s for Pajama Night (Youth Staff only)
Black business casual outfit
Smart business casual outfit
Evening Gown (female) or black tuxedo (male) - can be purchased onboard
A pairs of all black shoes / several pairs of all white socks
I did ask as I was technical crew not cruise staff did I need all that other stuff and was told I was also cruise staff and would be attending formal nights so yes !?!
Sorry about the epic questions but I can't get a decent answer from the recruiter ! Thank you for the time and expert knowledge.
No, as a STAT or stage staff in general you should not need any formal or themed wear, as our uniform (black polo, black pants) counts as formal wear...for some reason. As for the shoes yes they mean trainers/sneakers. Unless you plan on wearing the optional daytime uniform (black polo, khaki shorts, white socks, white shoes) then I wouldn't worry about bringing white trainers/socks. The steel toed boots are more optional in my experience, but I still bring them because you never know what a charter cruise load-in might have. To go back to the formal wear question, I tend to bring a nice shirt and dress pants for the rare occasion I decide to eat at one of the onboard "fancy" restaurants out of uniform, or there is some crew event. Other then that you'll probably never wear anything other then the standard uniform in guest areas.
Yeah, Royal is weird. I worked for Celebrity when they had just merged with Royal. Brought most of what was on the list only to find out they provided everything for you. As stage staff they may require you to wear steel toe boots (which they should provide). My suggestion is find some comfortable ones and bring your own. The ones they provide are horrible. They also have generic suits as well if you're ever required to wear (ie- you fill in for a lounge tech in the evening). You're right, the list they gave you is geared more towards activity staff. Bring black slacks (straight Dickies will pass for formal, too.) Black polo, black button-up long sleeve, black sneakers, and black boots (will also pass for formal). You'll be fine.
Those recruiters don't know anything. They're given a script from cruise line and none have even stepped foot on a cruise ship.
Good videos buddy , im supposed to go work in a cruise when the pandemic end or at least when tourism start again i have a question how do mens do to cut their hair ?
A few different ways:
1- Spa on board usually gives crew members discounted haircuts which are still super expensive in my opinion.
2- There's usually several crew members who have their own hair cutting equipment to make some extra cash. You'll either see them doing this in the hallways or just ask around. I did this once and they only charged 5 USD.
3- In port
4- What I mainly did and have for over 10 years now- Buy yourself some decent clippers (bout 30USD) and do it yourself if you dont care bout perfection haha.
@@workoncruiseship do you ever get sea sick
I've never gotten sea sick on the ships (which is weird cause I've gotten quite queezey but never vomiting on fishing boats as a kid once or twice- maybe the smell of dead fish mixed in with the motion?). However, there have been times on the ship where we would be trying to dodge storms for 2-3 weeks straight. The constant up and down, side to side motions, crashing on large waves would become quite aggravating. Not to mention my office also had rolling chairs. Drinking heavily throughout the day/night helped balance it out though (probably one of the reasons I no longer drink haha).
Hey! I’m starting as IT for royal in a week, I’m wondering if this job is typically stressful and what are the privileges that come along with it. I’m also wondering if there is a decent amount of time in port, thanks
what the best cruise to work for first time?
Dig the B roll
Hi! Thanks for all your information! I appreciate it! I have a question, like a member of the entertainment staff, do you have to do some OMI course before get into the cruise or that's only for the crew member or depends of the country you're in? Thanks for all!
My pleasure. ALL staff and crew (including production cast) have to become STCW-95 certified. The only employees who do not are guest entertainers (these are different than the production singers and dancers- they are independent contractors). For the majority of cruise lines; they'll conduct these courses on board. Usually takes place within the first few weeks of joining the ship; always in the mornings. You'll be excused from your shifts during those times but still have to work after. Can end up being really long days for a few weeks depending on your job. NCL America is the only one where you'll have to become certified prior to joining the ship. They also have to obtain a MMD. Either way, the cruise line pays for all these certifications.
Just accepted my first offer with NCL on POA greatly helped pack is it worth bringing my Xbox or should I sell it ?? I leave July 2nd
Congrats! Glad the video was helpful. What position? If it's not too much to drag with you in luggage, i'd recommend bringing it. I brought my PS2 for 2 contracts and it was worth it. I'm not even much of a gamer but it does help to just immerse yourself in another world for a little while. Great way to make some new friends and could get some cabin parties started, too.
@@workoncruiseship Bet appreciate the reply I didn’t know if I would have the down time to play other I’ve been watching a lot videos to atleast get a feel for what ima get into almost everyone talks about the workload
It could depend on position and ship. However, I only worked Celebrity and NCL, you've got your contract with NCL America. The American one I heard is very different (super strict on alcohol policy, most officers are former US Navy, etc...). I couldn't give you my personal experience of it, only what was relayed to me. You'll still be able to have a good time either way. It's bout 90% American crew and 10% Foreign, American Flagged, and in American waters the entire duration. Whereas other lines I have experience with are like 99.6% Foreign and .4% American. Sailing under the Bahamian Flag and frequently in international waters.
@@workoncruiseship If I like this I plan on maybe doing 2-3 more in Hawaii and then try to get onto an international ship I’m ex military active duty army so I think I can handle the workload and I’ve heard about the alcohol restrictions luckily I don’t drink much
Thank you for your service! I think you'll still find the workload to be less than what you're expecting. Because it's flagged under US, it has to follow US labor law. Have a great time and feel free to keep us posted on how things are going!
@workoncruiseships I leave in April 2020
How much money should an employee bring when first starting on a ship?
Congrats. Recommendation is around $100 USD. However, I'd make it closer to $200 - $300 USD if you have it. Depends on which country you're departing from and where you're going to meet the ship. Take into account the amount of days you're traveling and how. Some have to take a day-long bus ride just to get to an international airport. Of course airport food is super expensive, too. And any country which takes Euros, US Dollar is not gonna go as far. The last part is for when you're finally acustomed to being on board for a week or so and made some friends- don't want to get stuck searching for an atm in a foreign port that isn't going to kill you on service charges. ATM on board ship (even in crew area) isn't the greatest.
@@workoncruiseship Thank you very much for the information!
@@Aaron-CO My pleasure.
Great question. I was wondering too.ty
Great advices. Do u have the link where I can find this safe?
Not where I bought it but this is the exact model: www.amazon.com/SentrySafe-P005C-Portable-Cubic-Black/dp/B004LAMJVI/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?crid=JZVPAJ7O1A26&keywords=portable+sentry+safe&qid=1637777172&sprefix=portable+sentry+safe%2Caps%2C124&sr=8-3
So much fun 😅😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣
my children bought me a 6 month around the world cruise. after a military career US Air Force (as a pilot) i’ve been around twice already! my flight luggage was limited to FIVE POUNDS of “luggage” .... What the fudge are my children thinking?? my father was an Admiral in the US Navy and it broke his heart i didn’t go Navy! i can’t swim!!! HOW MUCH STUFF DO I NEED TO PACK AS A PASSENGER?? i guess i’ll find my old duffle bag and fill it with enough junk for half a year. my biggest fear is how will i refill medications on the open sea? i love my kids, i am grateful for this gift. but i know what i use at home in six months, how do i fit that into luggage? this is a new ship, late 2018 was first cruise, so it’s going to be one of those mega liners with glass walkways. didn’t my children recall i can’t swim?
do you still work on ships?
love this video jajajaj

Sir please tell me what is age limits to working is cruise ship
Please excuse my ridiculously long delay in responding (apparently just being notified of this comment now). I don't believe there is an age limit, although I haven't seen anyone working over the age of say 65 or so. It depends on the position and if you can pass the physical, you should be fine.
😉 "Just like...prison." But sheesh, he so rough on everything he owns, tossing everything on the floor. Hope your sunglasses weren't in one of those.
Lol it made the stuff I was worried about seem less worrisome, ty
I just got a offer on ncl pride of America as utility hotel
Congratulations! Let us know how it goes.
@Angel I know it’s been two year but i am applying for the same position. How was it ? And how much did u get paid ?
Love it, la ptm!
I am a cook on cargo ship. I am 40 years old. Can i join with cruise ship line?
Please excuse my ridiculously long delay in responding (apparently just being notified of this comment now). Hopefully, you were able to get an answer to this. Yes, you can work on a cruise ship, I'm not sure what the pay difference would be. I would have rathered worked on a cargo ship myself but I had blown out my knee a year or two prior to joining and chose a cruise line instead (their physical was not as strict on requirements).
14 pairs of undies and socks... is that for a week, taking 2 pairs per day?
It all has to do with the laundry situation on board. Watch this video: ruclips.net/video/-7xPLQ2FZAM/видео.html It will give you an idea of just how bad it is so you'll want to make sure you have enough underwear and socks so you're not driving yourself insane trying to do laundry too often.
Hola! Can I pack a mini air purifier? 🤔
Yep. You sure can!
@reddy vet vaccine
Estou bem, e você
How about pillow cases, sheets, blanket, and or towels? Would those be provided? or should I bring my own?
They do provide all of these. However, keep in mind that it is the most basic of basic quality. I was not one of them, but many choose to bring their own pillows and towels. Not so much sheets and blankets, but definitely some sort of throw.
how to pass medical?
I just did it. it's pretty extensive. First you have to either go to one of their Specific medical clinics. if you can't then you can buy the paperwork (they send me a link to get it) and take it to your family doctor or a walk in clinic that is able to do a "Seafarers medical exam". you have to get things like blood work, urin test, chest xray, EKG, dental work (can't have any cavitys or absests), as well as a pretty thorough exam. It Can take a couple of weeks depending on appointments and such.
Did you see many Americans working security
Occasionally, a Security Officer would be from the U.S., however, the majority of the security staff came from Nepal.
Can i bring a Pirate's Flag on Board 🏴☠️
Yes, but you have to provide medical documentation of a missing eye and/or a missing leg.
