Amazing video - for a while I was doing just that..... (face-palm) grabbing whatever comp was in reach (simply because I didn't know they're like wine) different ones taste diff! - I really like how you classified them as well :) makes it easy to Remeber!!!! -
5:39 I tend to find that the slower the attack time is the more aggressive it sounds. I get more of the transients hitting my ear and to me that sounds more aggressive. Anyone else feel the same or just me?
I just hit the like button and subscribed before this video was finished. You caught my intention on something and I want to thank you for that. New Subscriber 🎉🎊 Keep it going 💯👌🏾
Miami, I love how you are seriously informative and transitionally fun at the same time. I think they call that Edutainment. You are a master at it. Please Keep rockin the content
I don't do that much automation, but I like to gain adjust phrases in vocals if they're too loud compared to other ones, before any processing. And then I'll use a transparent limiter to catch unruly peaks so they won't trigger the compressor. There are no rules, just widely accepted standards that are a great starting point.
I’d say that clip gain is a form of automation in a way, especially since this is before the inserts, I do this myself, is faster than automation and I can get great results.
Automations are great; the POWAIR compressor by SoundRadix is really the only one I use these days since it can apply compression at the same amount even if levels are varying… I’ve definitely over-compressed vocals before though…
@@joeymusic I like C2 by FabFilter (who doesn't) and if I want a raw 80's type sound to color my compression, I'll use +10dB by Boz Digital Labs. I find POWAIR to be the most versitile and transparent compressor though. If I really want saturation on top of that, I'll probably reach for Saturn2 or another saturation plugin
Do the vst modeled compressors really react the same way the analogue version do on the same source material? I've never used analogue gear so I have no basis for comparison.
I mean, pretty much. There’s a video I did a long time ago called Howard Benson Vocals vs a $6000 vocal chain. The blue stripe all buttons in was very similar to hbv, you should check it out, it’s worth a watch! -Miami
Helpful as always broseph, personally the place in the chain the compressor and which type for which role. I didnt really they were that different from one another besides overall quality of the plugin
@@joeymusic damn, thanks, man! Almost mostivated to cover it, tho my mix will be horrendous! Well, fixing that is the reason I'm here, haha. Also, crrrrRrrRrrazy transition game, you quickly became almost my favorite youtuber, legit. You are awesome, Miami!
I compress first, because when I EQ, all I do is cut. By cutting the bad frequency, it makes the good shine more. Compression after the EQ, just means I gotta EQ again.
Are the mixers all comped, or just Draft beers? How hard should my knee be? And WTF is hard or soft knee compression? It’s the attack/release values right?
Thanks for the vid. I can name an A list mixer putting the compressor before the eq. Like Yoad Nevo (Sia, Giggs, Pet Shop Boys, Goldfrapp, Moby, Air, Morcheeba, Girls Aloud, The Dandy Warhols, Bryan Adams, Duran Duran, Sugababes, Sophie Ellis Bextor, KT Tunstall...)
I’m glad you mention automations a lot of people don’t do automation but it makes the vocals or mix way better
Yup, the difference is huge!

@Ken Severo Vocal and bass rider by waves.
Bro you’re crushing it. Keep em coming. And do a video about multi-band compression! 🤘🏼
The ONLY reason I hit the sub button was because of Miami's transition sub game. Period. He's worth the entertainment. You win Miami...Subbed.
Thanks for your generosity!! I just smoothed a mix that's been battling me for months!
Your personality is on 10. So is the helpfulness of this video. Noob mixer here, thank you for your audio wisdom!
Thanks so much Jennifer! Hope this helps you out on your next project!

Love JSTs videos! Miami you da man for real
Appreciate you! Thanks for watching this, now your compressors have limitless potential😜

Great reminders! Always super easy (for me at least) to forget how important attack and release times are.
Yup! The reminders are good so that we dont become complacent!

Cool videos Miami.
Would love to see a video about automation. One of the hardest think to think about for mixing lol
This seems to be what everyone wants! I’m working it out for guys!

never knew that about the different types of compressors... Cant wait to try it
Same here! I mean, I read "FET", "tube" etc compressors, but I didn't know which one fits on what.
All gems. Thank you for this.
You’re welcome! Is there anything that stuck out to you specifically?

@@joeymusic Explaining the different types of compressors, its great knowledge for music makers.
I'm ashamed to admit how helpful this is 😁
I may or may not have just benefited by swapping a compressor type on some material....
Glad it was helpful!
Its crazy how simple things like this can improve a mix!

Compressors can definitely can kill a song if not used with understanding it very well.
Smooth Transition Game!!
i love these advices
What genre is this, I like it?
I compress first, because when I EQ, all I do is cut. By cutting the bad frequency, it makes the good shine more. Compression after the EQ, just means I gotta EQ again.
You don't have any music on your page
I find this hard to understand.. for example if am using a stereo bus can I still put FX directly on my track individually?
You can in Reaper; can literally put a chain of FX on only one item in a track if you want… not sure about other DAWs though…
Where can I hear that Free Fallin cover???
Go to the skybox 20 features video, it’s at the end!

💯💯 good video
please do a tutorial on automation
It would be a great improvement if you showed us the meters of how over compressor looks on the compressor meter
I would also add, compressing for the sake of compressing. If it doesn't need compression, DON'T COMPRESS IT!
Nice shit Joey
Your segues are silk!
Are the mixers all comped, or just Draft beers?
How hard should my knee be? And WTF is hard or soft knee compression?
It’s the attack/release values right?
You trollin me today ninja? Lol

Me as a noob: guess I'll use maximus again
Geat tips Joey! I love making sure I'm doing it right! haha! Big howdy from wet, grey and still sorta weirdly not back to normal Ireland!
